Taxes

Tryharder · 16/01/2010 17:06

Are you talking about Haiti??!!!

Troll!

And given the slightest chance that you are serious, then of course YABU. The money they are sending to Haiti is a a mere piss in an ocean.

tethersend · 16/01/2010 17:07

Oh Christ... you don't think they could be...lying about it, do you?

2shoes · 16/01/2010 17:10

oh ffs tryharder
did I say I had any objection to them sending it(as for trooll, who are you)
I asked where the goverment got it from.

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 16/01/2010 17:10

ermm 2shoes 'aint a troll.

2shoes -it comes from the foreign aid budget (so yes taxes)

2shoes · 16/01/2010 17:11

fab, so is that future taxes(as in borrowing it) or money they already have?

OP posts:
JeMeSouviens · 16/01/2010 17:11

I imagine they have money earmarked yearly from the taxes for aid, but I'm not the treAsurer, so I wouldn't really know

2shoes · 16/01/2010 17:12

Awassailinglookingforansw... oh I get it now, so they have a special sort of pot.
makes sense now

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 16/01/2010 17:12

I wouldn't have a clue. Just a guess.

hatwoman · 16/01/2010 17:13

down the back of the sofa. they deliberately never check there so that when they need a few pennies to save some lives they can find some.

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 16/01/2010 17:13

I'm just trying to google - I'm 99.99% certain though that there is a "pot" that is allocated in the budget each year that's set aside for foreign aid (and this type of emergency as well).

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 16/01/2010 17:15

urghhh - hm treasury website is shite to navigate - so I can't figure out what it would come under - but yes taken out of a pot already set aside for such things.

Lonicera · 16/01/2010 17:17

well the uk already has a national debt of billions, so a few million sent in aid will make very little difference to the debt, but will help a lot of people.

Tryharder · 16/01/2010 17:20

Oh sorry 2shoes. I only pop in and out of MN when i am bored at work so don't always recognise those who are er... perhaps a bit more regular than myself.

As for who am I?? Clearly a very anonymous person and that's how I like it. But come on, your post sounded a bit inflammatory - unless it was a piss take.

But in answer to your question: customs, taxes, VAT, fines.... I have worked in an overseas government dept before and seen the amount of money wasted on crap so not sure how anyone could really question a few million going to Haiti. Hence my post...

(But am genuinely sorry for calling you a troll when you are not - consider my wrist slapped.)

so it is wrong to as where the goverment get money from now? how very odd.
If you read my op, I never once said I think it is wrong just asked how they could afford it.

OP posts:
wicked · 16/01/2010 17:37

Some of us pay taxes. What a concept.

wannaBe · 16/01/2010 17:40

when the budget is done at the beginning of the financial year there will be an allocation for foreign aid and emergency funding..

I imagine that if that pot isn't used then it will roll over and either the allocation for next year will be less (as there's already money there) or the money will be used to offset different spending. So say if Haiti hadn't happened, that £6m would likely have been carried forward into next year and there would be £6m less allocated from next year's budget.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 16/01/2010 17:43

It's already been budgeted for, and it's only £6m, that's nothing really.

ShinyAndNew · 16/01/2010 17:52

DH was appalled that they are only sending 6 million. He reckons America have already gave 10m and are planning on giving more.

Have just asked him about where it comes from and he reckons, after much probing and his 'The Treasuary ' reply, it's most likely tax money we already have. And that they build up 'reserves' for situations like this.

But he is now interested himself, so I bet I will be kicked off the pc in a minute so he can check it out.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 16/01/2010 17:59

Isn't there some "disasters and emergency" fund or similar?

May be quite wrong of course... but just thought I'd throw it out there!

fairycake123 · 16/01/2010 18:05

I assume it's set aside and ringfenced.

Ripeberry · 16/01/2010 18:10

Haiti needed help years ago, it's so sad that this had to happen to make people notice.
Haiti truly is hell

pantomimecow · 16/01/2010 20:31

£6m is absolute peanuts out of the pot

Doodleydoo · 16/01/2010 20:37

If the US are only giving 10m it makes us look generous doesn't it - just think how sad that is, people have won more on the lottery than we are giving to an entire country in need.........

It is quite sad that we probably rack up 6 mill in an hour on interest on loans....(a little sarcastic I know but probably not far from the truth)
