My dd1 is year 2 at school. They have been doing Famous People this week - literacy, history etc.

She has come home sounding interesting and well-informed about Grace Darling, Florence Nightingale, Eliz the first. Great thought I, interesting subjects and all women too.

Thursday. She comes out. "We did Cheryl Cole in famous people today".

Grrrrr. FGS. And WTF?

Hmm
GhoulsAreLoud · 15/01/2010 17:43

Wouldn't bother me if it's balanced by famous historical people.

rubyslippers · 15/01/2010 17:44

well, she is famous

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 15/01/2010 17:44

What is the problem?

Hullygully · 15/01/2010 17:45

And she is a great role model.

50ftQueenie · 15/01/2010 17:48

My DS is in year 2 and has been doing Famous People this week too! I haven't grilled him about it so I'm not sure what they have been doing. All I know is that he had to pretend to be Jamie Oliver as that was his chosen famous person. Could the teacher have been juxtaposing those are famous for a real reason with those who are famous for having big norks etc? To demonstrate the cult of celebrity in today's society and get them thinking about how vile it is? No? Probably not.

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 15/01/2010 17:48

Oh come on. You really think she will be a figure to be learnt about in 100 years time? Like Florrie N and Grace D? I seriously doubt it. And let's look at her shall we - she is famous because she is naturally pretty, can sing a bit and was VERY lucky. She also has a conviction for assault under her belt (mybe racially aggravated??). Great role model.

It is just dumbing down IMO.

50Ft queenie - lol. I doubt it too!

Hullygully · 15/01/2010 17:49

But such lovely hair.

50ftQueenie · 15/01/2010 17:52

Hmmm.... I've just asked DS who he studied in class this week and he told me that he studied Queen Victoria, Jamie Oliver and....... Cheryl Cole. Coincidence or same school? What's the initials of the school gerkin?

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 15/01/2010 17:53

And even her hair isn't hers, Hully - either sythetic or grown by an impoverished Russian.

it's crap!!

OP posts:
Hullygully · 15/01/2010 17:56

It is real! I know someone on the set and it is real, some spiteful person put round the extensions rumour. Cheryl is a real lady as well, she helped him out when he had a problem with his roof.

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 15/01/2010 17:58

Don't think so Queenie. Just looked at your profile and we are in West Mids, not Kent. Unless your ds has a ver' long commute to school!

maybe this is on the National Curriculum. Spring term week 1 Famous people from history and a mediocre star from the Hit parade.

OP posts:
50ftQueenie · 15/01/2010 18:02

Maybe. We'll have to find out if the mediocre star needs to have their own hair. You might be able to complain! It could also be that my DS is a bit of a ditz and got muddled up with Cheryl Baker or even Old King Cole.

muggglewump · 15/01/2010 18:10

YABU.
Cheryl Cole is a famous person, why not do her?

Really though, famous people are not what they were when I was young , and we have to accept it.

Of course I encourage it somewhat, given that I have front row tickets to the X Factor tour.

I doubt it will do any of our kids any harm, and for what they learn, next year's kids and the year after that will do the same, so there should be no disadvantage.

Mind you, I showed DD a pic of Princess Di and she said 'Ewww, what is with that dress^'

I do think that I should be a wee bit more positive about Cheryl Coles's clothes

JamesandHisFlamingSword · 15/01/2010 18:13

My DS1 did "heroes" at school in Year 1. His hero was David Attenborough. He has a slightly obsessional interest in The Blue Planet

LaurieFairyCake · 15/01/2010 18:15

She did have hair extensions - it says so in the advert

"styled with natural hair extensions" or some such arse.

yama · 15/01/2010 18:15

YANBU

Give the school a call and register your disappointment.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 15/01/2010 18:17

DD has been learning all about Florence Nightingale too.

InStyle · 15/01/2010 18:23

Cheryl Cole should be taught in PSE lessons. She waited 15 whole years to lose her cherry, and made the guy wait 3 months. And she's "very proud of that".

Pet.

skihorse · 15/01/2010 18:24

YANBU. Another mark for home schooling.

Hullygully · 15/01/2010 18:31

They lied in the advert. Cheryl is unimpeachable.

FuriousGeorge · 15/01/2010 18:33

Oh,I wonder if dd1 will do this subject this term-I'm a bit bored stuck at home ATM and could do with a soapbox to get onto

Mind you,I have just asked dd1 if she knows who Cheryl Cole is and she has no idea, which isn't surprising really as we don't watch X Factor or whatever show she is on.

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 15/01/2010 18:39

George - don't woryy, looks like dd will know exactly sho Cole is soon.
