Vegetarians

My husband is a chef and tonight is doing a seven course meal which he has been planning for a good couple of months. He has made sure that there is a vegetarian choice but has been informed today that one of the vegetarians going doesn't eat vegetables or quorn.
What the hell is that about? AIBU to be think this is totally ridiculous and to feel really sorry for dh?

How about:

crisp selection starter (wotsits, quavers and monster munch look nice on a plate)

tomato surprise (4 different sorts of tomato in ascending size order)

can coke (to refresh palate)

cheese n pineapple hedgehog (retro chic)

curried olive treats (flavoursome and v unusual)

jam roly poly

ice cream

job done.

LetThereBeRock · 14/01/2010 18:21

YANBU about the vegetables. I can't imagine not eating any vegetables at all.

Quorn however is a different matter. It's a vile substance.

grumpypants · 14/01/2010 18:22

off the subject here (sorry) but as a veggie, I would love to have a choice at these things. There is always a veggie option, and about three meat options. If you hate tomato soup followed by mushroom risotto followed by fruit salad you are stuck.

LetThereBeRock · 14/01/2010 18:26

Or the ever present goat's cheese tart.

pigsinmud · 14/01/2010 18:30

Weird, but a lot of meat-eaters don't eat vegetables. I made a veggie risotto the other day and watched friend's dh pick out the peppers, peas, carrots... any vegetables that were in there. Apparently he doesn't eat vegetables - only meat and carbohyrates!

LillianGish · 14/01/2010 18:39

I'msonottelling - lol at your description of tomato surprise.

grumpypants · 14/01/2010 18:45

oh goats cheese tart in filo pastry. and the way we never get chips with our option, always some form of healthy vitamin packed thing.

pointydig · 14/01/2010 18:47

A vegetarian who doesn't eat veegtables is ridiculous. Give him mushroom strongonoff and be done with it.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 14/01/2010 18:50

I have to know what they do eat.

lljkk · 14/01/2010 18:51

I used to live with a large house full of (student) vegetarians who rarely if ever ate vegies. They lived on cheese and bread, near as I could tell.

Meanwhile us carnivore residents used to do all sorts of vegetable based meals with meat as the flavourful centrepiece. Like my Turkish housemates did this traditional aubergine dish with minced lamb -- or DH who was raised on meat+3veg+potatoes and even now struggles to eat much different.

FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2010 18:53

i second the goats cheese tart haters
or in a pub, always lasagne with garlic bread
yeah right cos i want to eat pasta accompanied by bread

LadyThompson · 14/01/2010 18:54

I am a veggie. But vegetarians who don't eat vegetables should not be allowed to dine out.

ElenorRigby · 14/01/2010 18:54

r u serious?

FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2010 18:54

[lightbulb]
however lasagne with garlic bread would be perfect for the odd vegetarian in the OP

pointydig · 14/01/2010 18:54

lol @ franny. You do realise that most people love pasta and bread or pasta and chips?

ElenorRigby · 14/01/2010 18:55

lol u must be talking crap!

grumpypants · 14/01/2010 18:55

nope, too much carb. I'm with franny.

LetThereBeRock · 14/01/2010 18:55

Pasta + garlic bread = heaven.

piscesmoon · 14/01/2010 18:56

I can see why they wouldn't eat quorn, but they really aren't a vegetarian if they don't eat vegetables!
He just sounds like a picky eater at the 3 yr old level where they have a restricted diet of a few items. His parents should never have let him get away with it!! (I have just put him-maybe her).
I bet they don't eat mushrooms either. I would ask for a list of foods they eat-I bet it comes down to egg and chips!

nickytwotimes · 14/01/2010 18:57

I agree that any ADULTS veggie or otherwise who do not eat vegetables shouldn't be allowed out.

Tbh though, most 'vegetarian options' are shite and have been the same since 1982.

Fecking goat's cheese every bloody time.
Or pasta in a tomato sauce.

LetThereBeRock · 14/01/2010 19:00

Or mushroom risotto.

piratecat · 14/01/2010 19:01

lmao @ Sonottelling's

''tomato surprise (4 different sorts of tomato in ascending size order)''

i am veggie, i cannot imagine what she does eat then. Quorn, fair enough, it isn't that great tbh.

I haven't heard from him since he told me about it earlier. I wish I could have told him all the things that people have suggested, they're brilliant. I'll find out what he eventually cooked and what they said that they could eat.
TBH I think my dh was tempted just to say tough! lol
I think he's guilt about the goats cheese tart though I know he's done that a few times before even he thinks the thing is vile, o I'll suggest that he leaves it off for a while.

Give them a jacket potato with cheese... Assuming that potatoes aren't on this ridiculous veto list.
I was vegetarian for 18 years and I can't eat Quorn- it gives me miserable stomach ache for the rest of the night. unfortunately saying you are veggie usually prompts hosts to rush out for Quorn, even if you say "I'll just have the veggies thanks!"
