to think I can pronounce my DD's name how I like?

My DD is called Naomi, both DH and I pronounce it Naomi, but my mum says this is wrong and always pronounces it Naomi. Mum looks after her 2 days a week so sees her often. I feel like we should have the right, as paretns, to be able to choose how it's pronounced.... but now I have this nagging feeling that I've picked a name that will cause confusion / anxiety as she grows up??
Friends pronounce it both ways too.

It will be interesting to see how she chooses to pronounce it as she gets older. At the moment she just calls herself "Mimi"!!!

lol at Missmarjoribanks - similar situation in my family, my great aunt was given a (totally unrelated to her name) nickname by her Dad that stuck - all of her family call her by that nn, but her DH called her by her real name which was VERY confusing. Got used to it in the end though.

MmeLindt · 14/01/2010 14:17

Ah, don't worry about it. I have been told by MNetters that I am pronouncing my DD's name wrong and it makes me sound thick.

Your DD will either be bothered by it and correct her Granny eventually or just ignore it. You could help her along by saying, 'Oh, silly Granny, she is pronouncing your name wrong'.

Eventually she will say, 'Silly Granny, my name is NaOmi'

that reminds me of a PE teacher we had at school! She was a really strict, "no-nonsense" type and didn't believe in bothering to learn pupils' names. Everyone was either a "Fred" or a "Gladys"
[nostalgic]

The name you choose for your child is your choice and the way you want people to pronounce it should be respected. DD4 is called Freya and the reaction we got from my Mum when we announced the name was awful. She simply said "oh dear". Now she insists on calling her "Friar" and my brother does not even know how to spell it.

GetDownYouWillFall · 14/01/2010 14:45

inacat - that is awful, I can't believe your mum said "oh dear" to your choice of name (which is gorgeous and pretty BTW) and now can't even be bothered to say it right!

A friend of mine called her little girl Paris, the parents in law didn't like it and now call her "Amy" - so to the entire family she is Paris apart from her grandparents on one side where she is Amy - awful disrespect IMO

I was at Uni with someone we all called Danny.

Twas a bit weird at his wedding to hear him say "I, Graham ...."

incacat · 14/01/2010 14:53

Thanks,GDYWF x How awful for the family of Paris. I like to think that when my 4 DD's have babies I will keep my mouth firmly shut if I don't like their choice of name. Especially as DD3, who is 3, wants to call her child 'Cornflake'

YANBU!
Naming your child is sooo personal and very disrespectful to parents for other people to not use their chosen name or pronounce it differently.I am starting to get the same kind of thing, im having twins but we dont want to know the sexes until birth first choice girls name being Sophia, sick of hearing pronunciation of 'Safia' 'Sapphire' 'Sofire' etc etc by family. These are MY children so i will decide!!!!!!

ginormoboobs · 14/01/2010 15:42

YANBU
I am also fed up of being corrected. My DS has a name that came be PN 2 ways. We choose to pn it the less common way and have been informed that we should have spelt it like blah blah if we wanted to PN it like that. Nooooo , I know how to pn my Child's name so stop fucking correcting it!

MunchMummy · 14/01/2010 15:52

I'm a Naomi as well and have encountered this problem all my life.

My mum calls me Naomi, I pronounce it Nayami. I've heard every incarnation there is - people still have trouble with it now and I'm in my 30's.

Although I love my name I got annoyed with people pronouncing it Naomi when I was 8 and told everyone (apart from my parents) for about 15 years to pronounce it another way.

Nicknames were Nai, Na, Nay - saved all the agro.

Just incase you haven't worked it out yet either, if you spell the name backwards it says "I moan". Te he.

MunchMummy · 14/01/2010 15:55

Oh, just to say that name pronunciation obviously hasn't affected me that much as I've called my DD2 Madeleine - many ways of spelling and saying that one. Love us for that one she isn't.

GetDownYouWillFall · 14/01/2010 15:55

I know munch - my dad pointed out that it was "I moan" backwards on the day she was born! Grrrrrrr!

I have a name that is spelt two different ways, and the pronunciation changes according the spelling.

In their great wisdom, my parents plumped for one spelling, but use the other pronunciation.

Lovely.

cleopops · 14/01/2010 15:59

Ginormoboobs i cant agree more
Sorry but YOU should have spelt it differently ?!!!
I am preg and dont have any other kids so find it shocking that people feel happy to comment on all aspects of my preg, my name choice, my childcare plans etc without thinking if they are being rude.
You carried your child and gave birth, i think it gives you the right to pn its given name any bloody way you want!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 14/01/2010 16:42

A Japanese friend is called Naomi but pronounced now-me

pooexplosions · 14/01/2010 16:55

You can pronounce your childs name how you prefer, but only within reason, you can't just make up your own pronounciation.

I know a girl called Ciara, well thats how it was written down. I called her that, her mother says, no, its pronounced Sierra.

No dear, it isn't, those letters do not make that sound. You can't just decide that they do, otherwise the english language has no meaning!!

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 14/01/2010 17:04

at Dave!

My Naomi is Na-oh-me but tbh she gets all sorts and it doesn't bother us - or her. My favourite is G-nome, said with a hard G.

Mandy1966 · 14/01/2010 19:09

my mate a naomi, she and her mates call her Nome
