to be annoyed at ds's new teacher?

My ds started full time school on Monday this week. Loved it Monday and Tuesday but scared to go this morning as he heard teacher tell another child that he would have to stop crying or she would chop him up. He said he'll
never ever cry, even if he hurts himself cos he'll get chopped up. I asked her about it and she said she would have a word with him. ds said, "it's ok she told me she was only joking." So she hasn't denied it but is this an appropriate joke for a class of 4/5 year olds?

tines = tinies

Sorry for any typos: I need a new keyboard as this one needs to be whacked harder than my fingers can remember to do so!

dilemma
Your DDs after school care club sounds great!

CirrhosisByTheSea · 13/01/2010 21:16

I still think this was really silly of the teacher. When a 4 yr old is starting school full time it is not a good time to be making joke threats! The poor kid is still trying to settle to school and cope with a full day away from his mum!

I'm completely one for humour and have said many a bizarre and frankly threatening thing to my own ds but I think in the context and safety of home and the parent/child relationship that is very different

Wrong of the teacher to assume this would be taken the right way by a 4 yo, imo.

pointydig · 13/01/2010 21:18

You have no idea what the tacHER was assuming or not, cirr

CirrhosisByTheSea · 13/01/2010 21:19

i think that sounds great too dilemma! Thing is I don't think it's the same at all as the scenario in the OP, yours was a play situation with lots of kids and playleaders at a club, all joining in to play a game; this was a teacher saying to one child who was crying "stop that or I'll chop you up", I do see why the OP's ds was not able to cope with that because it's a threat from an authority figure and he's at a vulnerable stage of settling in.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 13/01/2010 21:20

err well I think by saying this the teacher was assuming it was ok....call me a silly ol' thing

TheFallenMadonna · 13/01/2010 21:54

But....presumably the other child was OK, and the OP's child was fine once the teacher had had a word ("It's OK she told me she was only joking"), and I just don't think it's worth fretting about.

lilac21 · 13/01/2010 22:21

YANBU. I'm an infant teacher and I would never say something like that to a young child. As a parent, your own DC know when you are kidding, but school children don't know their teacher well enough to judge, if they are even old enough. They think we live at school, after all!

CirrhosisByTheSea · 13/01/2010 22:28

My ds is in year 3 with a teacher with the most hysterical sense of humour, ds comes home with some genuinely hilarious stories, but even at this age group, 7 to 8, I know his teacher would not make a direct personal 'threat' joke. It's just not funny in the context of the teacher/pupil relationship. I find your response heartening lilac! To be honest I would also not expect a teacher to say to my ds, if he was crying "stop it or i'll chop you up' I would hope for a more professional response to be honest - hopefully a kinder response, but at the very least a more 'enlightened' strategy for dealing with a crying child.

OK I accept this is not a huge issue in the great scheme of things and I don't think anyone's 'fretting' just giving their opinion to the OP which is the point of any thread!

TheFallenMadonna · 13/01/2010 22:30

I think the OP is fretting.
But maybe she is just musing.

Her DS overheard this BTW. It was not directed at him.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 13/01/2010 22:31

indeed, but clearly troubled him enough to bring it home as a worry

TheFallenMadonna · 13/01/2010 22:34

Ah well. I'm just scanning active convos for the thread about the science teacher who makes death threats against their students...

CirrhosisByTheSea · 13/01/2010 22:35

what is it with teachers nowadays
