To ban dd from watching CITV?

The cash-for-gold ads on CITV are driving me up the wall, they are relentless parasitic garbage of the worst sort and very nearly played back to back on sometimes. Final straw came when 4 yr old DD turned around and asked me if she could cash our gold?!! Of course I told her no, I want to keep my jewellery thankyou, she replies "But I don't want my necklaces, I want cash!" stamps foot, crosses arms etc.
I am now reluctant to let her watch the channel at all and restrict her to cbeebies or dvd cartoons whenever I can. So what do you reckon, AIBU?

Um ... don't let her watch what you don't want her to watch. Simple.

southeastastra · 12/01/2010 15:14

yes yabu, people complaining about junk food ads stopped citv not it's only available on cable etc.

it's up to YOU to turn off the bit you don't like.

fernie3 · 12/01/2010 15:37

My daughter asked me if I wanted "cheaper car insurance" I think YABU unreasonable to ban her just for that but you are her parent so its up to you!

FimbleHobbs · 12/01/2010 15:42

When I asked DS how he did something the other day, he told me 'I just asked my Moben designer'. I still cry with laughter thinking about it (guess you had to be there) - poor sod inheriting my sense of humour.

Anyway I reckon its healthy to develop a cynicism for advertising and watching and discussing adverts is one way to do that.

AMumInScotland · 12/01/2010 15:45

Explain to her that they would only give her a few pence for her lovely necklaces, because they are not nice helpful people at all, and that advertisers always want people to buy things they don't need or take services which are not good value for money.

The sooner she understands that, the sooned she can be an aware consumer and not a pawn.

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 12/01/2010 15:52

Only thing I'd say is if you stop her watching CITV over this (and I'd be tempted to as well, but we dont have a TV anyway!) you have to make that known to the company.

wipes away tears of laughter at Fimblehobbs ds

bubblerock · 12/01/2010 15:53

Just record the programmes she likes then you don't have to watch the adverts - simples

Hulababy · 12/01/2010 15:54

That is why I prefer the BBC chldren's channels and Disney Channel - no ads.

NoahAndTheWhale · 12/01/2010 16:02

I can't stand adverts so we don't watch channels with them on.

jemart · 12/01/2010 16:10

I am not enforcing a total ban yet (though I am sorely tempted) just change channels whenever these advertisements come on, which is annoyingly frequent at the moment.
