AIBU in thinking that there is a very definite
tendency on this site for MNers to accuse those who post views that are out-of-the-ordinary as being, "trolls"?

I, for one, find this tendency to be annoying. I mean, people, what do you want from an internet site - a boring place where all your views are the same and your nice little PC views can homogenise into becoming a sweet-tasting, milky (zero-fat) smug little world?

Get a grip. Believe me, there is no fun in a site where EVERYBODY thinks the same way.

There is a hide button for anything you don't want to read and i shall be using it now on this.

Trolls can be interesting and funny.

But mostly they are just boring and ignorant and should be ignored. I really cannot muster the energy to get annoyed by them.

Bonsoir · 12/01/2010 09:12

Completely agree, marantha. There is a ridiculous group-think hysteria going on on here right now. The second anyone offers an opinion counter to the MN group-think PC opinion, a huge number of posters start stone-throwing.

Where are we? Iran?

Exactly, lovebeing, there's a hide button.

I'm always amused by people saying how offended, over and over again within a thread.

Hide the thread and walk away from the computer and let the silly people get on with it.

YANBU

Trolling is posting a fake life story to solicit sympathy or material gifts. I don't think having a controversial opinion is trolling.

I also think we don't have any inherent right not to be offended by another poster and I like the way Mumsnet is quite self-policed so people can say things which are controversial if they can stand the response, although blatantly racist/homophobic slurs would be a problem

Heqet · 12/01/2010 09:24

Actually, I think you have a point.

I am thinking of those who are accused of being a troll because they hold views that others find offensive.

She/he is not a troll simply because s/he holds those views. People do hold those views. To accuse someone of trolling because they express those views makes no sense.

It is saying that only my opinion is real, if you express an opinion that I don't agree with / don't like / find offensive you must be trolling because you cannot possibly hold that view in real life.

FimbleHobbs · 12/01/2010 09:24

I don't agree that everyone should think the same way.

But I don't agree with people/trolls/whatever posting topics just to upset people who are vulnerable/sensitive. Its clear that the recent ones are not someone who wants to have a good debate - it someone getting pleasure from upsetting people, and thats just horrible.

Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.

AnyFucker · 12/01/2010 09:41

I didn't accuse that person of being a troll

I accused her of lots of things, but not that

Trolling is not the same as pulling someone up on their ridiculous, offensive, supercilious, blatant shit-stirring ideas...

she got a hard time, deservedly so

I wouldn't let comments like she made pass in RL, so why should I feel I have to on here ?
