To cut a long story short:
My dds 2nd steam steriliser has just stopped working. She was 9 mths at the end of Dec.
I don't realy have the money to replace it and it will only have another 11 weeks use anyway.
I would wash the bottles in the dishwasher. Would this sterilise them adequately?
I'm in a bit of a panic

Washing them in the dishwasher is fine. I believe lots of countries don't bother sterilising at all.

MiladyDeWinter · 07/01/2010 23:24

Should be fine. I'd just use lots of hot soapy water tbh.

thelunar66 · 07/01/2010 23:24

I don't know anyone who still sterilsed after 6 months, so you will be ok

GingerbreadFolk · 07/01/2010 23:25

The dishwasher does exactly the same job. You can use the dishwasher from birth to sterilise.

RockBird · 07/01/2010 23:25

Yes the bottles will be fine going through the dishwasher, it works as well as a steriliser. I sterilised up to a year but very half heartedly and only because I had the steriliser there. If it had broken I would have stopped. It's more important to wash the bottles properly if they've had milk in. DH would give them a rinse and put the milky bottles in the steriliser given half the chance

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 07/01/2010 23:25

I was told that the dishwasher adequately sterilises - those things get hot! Certainly, I stopped using the steriliser after 6 months. Such a chore.

memorylapse · 07/01/2010 23:25

is dd crawling? if so dont worry..she has probably already sampled your carpet and anything else she can find on the floor
If you are using a dishwasher that will be fine

seriously though..I didnt sterilise once my dc's were at the stage of being able to put things in their mouths...

hobbgoblin · 07/01/2010 23:26

Dishwasher would have sterilised from the outset anyhow, but it buggers the bottles a bit after time and also you have to watch for residue in the bottom of teats and bottle.

You don't have to sterilise you really don't. A thorough wash is fine.

llareggub · 07/01/2010 23:27

I've never sterilised anything for DS2. Everything got dumped in the dishwasher.

You can ditch the steriliser now.

Sparklyblue · 07/01/2010 23:28

Omg, thanks so much all, I have tears of relief rolling down my cheeks

meltedchocolate · 07/01/2010 23:29

Sparklyblue · 07/01/2010 23:30

DS was licking the cat well before 9 months, just chuck em in the dishwasher.

Bottles have now been washed in hot soapy water and are waiting for feed time tomorrow.

Thanks so much

I still sterilize 11 month old dd's bottles after giving them a thorough scrubbing in hot soapy water. This is because I worry that any milk residue that might be left inside the teat could possibly cause listeria.

I'm planning to stop soon, when she changes to cow's milk at 12 months.

CoteDAzur · 08/01/2010 09:37

I sterilised DD's bottles for ages.

I stopped sterilising DS's bottles about a month ago and he is 7 months now. His bottles go in the dishwasher.

She will be fine, don't worry about it.

brimfull · 08/01/2010 09:38

I never sterilised anything with ds .

mrsjuan · 08/01/2010 09:41

A couple of questions about dishwashing bottles etc:

Do you wash them in hot soapy water first?

Don't they get that lovely reddish pink tinge that tupperware gets after a while?

lilyjen · 08/01/2010 09:44

I only sterilised teats at 6 months and stopped sterilising altogether by 9 months. Sterilisation is a precaution rather than an absolute must anyway and lots of other countries dont do it.

maduggar · 08/01/2010 09:44

I have never sterilised my DSs bottles. He was prem and in SCBU, and yet I still didnt. Just washed thoroughly and air dried.

gallery · 08/01/2010 09:44

Support other posts, first one I sterilised up to he was about 6 months. Second, I stopped when he was putting stuff in his mouth. I did use dishwasher though. Both were fine, no tummy bugs or any thing I could have related to not sterilising.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 08/01/2010 11:03

SMA tin says you can stop at 6 months these days. I stopped at 6 months, and DS has only ever had one tummy bug a month ago.

Seabright · 08/01/2010 11:03

I stopped sterilizing at about 6 months, after mini-seabright spent a very happy afternoon sucking & licking a supermarket trolley handle as I pushed her around. Didn't see the point after that.
