to expect the leader of a weight loss group not to be OBESE ffs

Oh yes. I have joined a weight loss group (one of the well known ones) and our 'leader' is obese. Not just a bit curvy, OBESE. Now don't get me wrong I know losing weight is hard work (hence the group) but really? Really?! They allow someone who clearly can't manage their own weight to help us lose weight? Please explain the logic.

You don't see many puny or obese fitness instructors do you??

charitygirl · 08/01/2010 11:15

Agree with bibbity...not been on MN for a bit, have previously excellent standards of mirth-makng fallen?

Inspire yourselves, fatties.

Or is that too harsh?

LaurieFairyCake · 08/01/2010 11:17

I'm obese (though possibly just look overweight) and I could still inspire you to lose weight.

I just don't choose to do it myself though - it's not one of my priorities.

I've had clients (am a counsellor) make quite dramatic personality and physical changes though so clearly being supportive of what individuals want to do has its own merits.

Disenchanted3 · 08/01/2010 11:18

BOF me and my sister were pissing ourselves laughing when we joined weight watchers last week, the door was tiny and I howled 'how are fat people supposed to fit through here?!'

Disenchanted3 · 08/01/2010 11:19

I know a MNers thats a leader and I'm sure she said she had to be within her healthy BMI after having her baby before they would allow her to run meeting again.

hf128219 · 08/01/2010 11:22

If you are a WW leader you are only allowed to be a few lbs over your goal weight.

GibbonInARibbon · 08/01/2010 11:25

lmfao @ 'Because I have eyes'

GothDetective · 08/01/2010 11:31

I think you can only be a SW leader if you're a healthy weight.

sincitylover · 08/01/2010 11:32

diets don't work anyway in the long term so she's prob an accurate representation of the diet industry

OpheliaPain · 08/01/2010 11:32

i think OP is right tbh.

MrsMorgan · 08/01/2010 11:37

My brothers gf is WW leader and apparently they are not allowed to be more than 1 pound over their target weight.

hf128219 · 08/01/2010 11:46

Diets don't work in the long term? Nonsense! The secret of weight loss is to expend more calories than you consume - it's not rocket science.

FuriousGeorge · 08/01/2010 15:27

I know a famous diet and fitness queen. She lives around the corner from me.Next time I see her I'll have to ask her if obese leaders are allowed in her organisation.

Are you allowed to say which organisation it was OP?

sincitylover · 08/01/2010 15:38

I beg to differ - the secret of permanenent weightloss is to change your mindset and attitudes around food. Not to deprive yourself - yo yo diet, vlc diets etc, demonise food, witter

They work then the weight goes back on again and more.

Long term 'dieters' are examples (myself included) are all that's wrong with the diet industry and serial dieting messes with your metabolism.

Three years ago I attended a Paul McKenna seminar since when my weight has remained stable, my body image positive and all angst around food and weighing has disappeared.

How liberating is that after twenty odd years of dieting.

I agree that its not rocket science on paper but it really isn't as simple in RL

sincitylover · 08/01/2010 15:39

don't know where the witter came from

AjollyNiceChutney · 08/01/2010 17:19

It's not a RC group if that's who you mean Laurie!

sincity lover - that sounds great. I'm not sure I'll ever shake the emotional side of eating. I watched his programme a while ago, made total sense but I'm still in the same rut. I would love a one to one session with him, get him to fix my food/emotional problems

OP posts:
sincitylover · 08/01/2010 17:32

it is great - however I do still need to lose weight. I need to revisit it tbh

almostreal · 08/01/2010 17:53

PMSL 'because I have eyes' perfect response.

SixtyFootDoll · 08/01/2010 17:57

You wouldnt expect to turn up at an AA meeting and find the leader pissed would you?
