look here photo of lady on lake with pram She is pushing her pram on a frozen lake, nobody actually knows how thick the ice is, "it's thought to be 6 inches thick".
Ice doesn't freeze in an even formation, she hits a thin spot she or the pram containing small child is going in.
BBC news had a vid feed of a child playing on a frozen lake lake last night as well, at the end of the news programme thet'd obviously had complaints because they announced we shouldn't worry about the child, the "pond" was a very shallow puddle....

Don't walk on frozen ponds/lakes, it's not bloody well safe you idiots.

yanbu - what a mad woman

MmeLindt · 07/01/2010 08:17

There was a long thread about this pic a couple of days ago.

The lake in question is being used for curling matches, and has often frozen over and been used so.

Several MNetters who live in the area said that it was not at all dangerous.

MmeLindt · 07/01/2010 08:19

here

itsmeolord · 07/01/2010 08:21

Sorry. didn't realise there was a previous thread. It looks so wrong and I have issue with pictures like this being shown as the norm when it encourages others to piss about on lakes/ponds etc that really aren't safe.
Theres a little boy critically ill in hospital at the moment after falling through ice.

Fair enough that particular lake may be considered safe, but many others aren't.

MmeLindt · 07/01/2010 09:13

that is all i can say! discusting

Says she who had spell check on her computer because she cannot spell very well herself.

MitchyInge · 07/01/2010 09:16

bit of a mad thing to do with a baby isn't it?

however playing ice roulette on ponds and water butts is one of my newest hobbies

diddl · 07/01/2010 09:17

It´s probably OK.
The temperatures have more than likely been low enough for long enough.

NorbertDentressangle · 07/01/2010 09:21

Not a risk I'd want to take with a child (or on my own TBH).

If an adult wants to go curling on it and is confident its thick enough then thats their choice

IfYouCouldWouldYou · 07/01/2010 09:26

If You look to the right of the picture you can see where the ice has alreday cracked and there is a hole

Morloth · 07/01/2010 09:33

Behold the power of evolution.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 07/01/2010 09:38

It's already been said on the other thread that the 'crack and hole' people are seeing is actually the shadow of a tree branch.

We used to ice skate on a frozen river every winter. This is no different.

And that is so obviously the shadow of a tree branch.

How about instead of assuming she's an idiot, assume she's smart enough to know its safe to take her baby in its pram on an obviously very frozen lake?

IfYouCouldWouldYou · 07/01/2010 09:52

Sorry did look like hole to me, haven't read the other thread.

GhoulsAreLoud · 07/01/2010 09:53

What's the point of doing it though? Is it a quicker way home or something?

Tee2072 · 07/01/2010 10:46

Why does there have to be a point? Maybe she thinks its fun. Or just a different way to walk home or to take a walk in general.

GhoulsAreLoud · 07/01/2010 10:49

Why does there have to not be a point?

ChickensHaveFrozenNuggets · 07/01/2010 10:50

@ Morloth

GrimmaTheNome · 07/01/2010 10:51

You're not unreasonable to wonder, but you are unreasonable to judge others when - as in this case - they have local knowledge and know what they are doing.

Nothing wrong with playing on frozen shallow puddles either, not quite sure what you were ing about there.
