In thinking that owning a 4X4 is not an excuse to drive like a twunt!!!

Just had a call from my DP (hands free!!!) who is explaining that the motorway is like an ice rink and that he is driving at about 30mph at max. He is in a van. About three times he has exclaimed about idiots zooming past him in 4x4s!! Yeah ok, so you might have more traction in a 4x4 but isn't this to help you pull away and drive more safely - it is not a green light to drive like a twat, your stopping distance is still going to be compromised in the snow, you could still lose control - kill yourselves if you must but FFS, my DP is trying to get home in one peice you selfish waste of spaces, i loathe people who drive like this, they are putting other peoples lives at risk for what? getting home 20 minutes earlier!! brain dead

grrrrr had to get that out!!

Why is one of Germany's (snowy country) most popular cars rear wheel drive - I've never quite grasped that (says smug Volvo owner).

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 06/01/2010 21:18

None of the roads around here have been gritted. Apparently buying grit for the roads with some of the many millions of road tax money would just be too clever, they'd rather dig roads up and put them back down and dig some holes and fill them again and maybe even change the road system and then change it back again. There's lots of ways to waste the money but using it productively would just be silly.

lucyellensmumagain · 06/01/2010 21:22

oh well, i am a teensy bit jealous, i lurrved my jeremy jeep X5?? cow!!!

I'd rather push a land rover than drive anything else

and I frequently have to

wasabipeanut · 06/01/2010 21:29

4 x 4 owners don't have the monopoly on driving like twunts BUT can do a lot more damage if they get out of control.

BTW, my brother drives for a living and says that this weather illustrates the fact that many 4 x 4 owners don't use a tenth of what the vehicles are capable of and can't drive them properly.

Drayford · 06/01/2010 21:36

LMAO @ harimosmummy

I wonder if there's a Take me to Waitrose button the one with a 4x4 and a shopping trolley

Heffthelump · 06/01/2010 21:36

Completely agree with MitchyInge and Mistletoe.

Wasabipeanut, too.

(Speaking as a former Range Rover owner.)

MitsubishiWarrioress · 06/01/2010 21:39

Actually, I think the one thing that 'twunts' have in common, is not the type of car that they drive, just the fact that they are drivers.

I live on a very very busy junction and whilst most drivers are OK, there isn't a class to twattishness. Cars, Lorries, 4 x 4's, buses, vans, motorbikes. There is a percentage of every type of vehicle that quite frankly should be abducted by aliens and have lobotomies. (or maybe that happens to some drivers before they get behind the wheel of a vehicle) And it is not a 'sex' thing either.... or age......

harimosmummy · 06/01/2010 22:35

drayford....

there should be such a button. i would use it!!!

hmc · 06/01/2010 22:46

Well tbh, I think anyone who drove their car today - who didn't absolutely have to - is a twunt, irrespective of the make and model of their vehicle.

squiby2004 · 06/01/2010 23:29

I seem to recall someone on here I forming me that of all the 4x4 the BMW X5 was the ultimate wanker car
:-)

yawn yawn yawn another slate the 4x4 brigade thread, how boring. Let's move on to the private schools shall we?

I will start.

I was really cross today as DD only went back yesterday. Today I had planned in dropping her off at her exclusive private school in my BMW X5 and then spending the day shopping in Waitrose and M&S b4 my hairdressers appt. But they clossed it. How vary dare they!! I pay their wages you know!!

Lmao!

BrahmsThirdRacket · 06/01/2010 23:34

When DP wanted this Freelander, my main issue with it was that it is just so boring to drive...massive clunky slow tedious thing. Much prefer my nippy Micra!

nigelslaterfan · 06/01/2010 23:47

People in 4 X 4s are better than the rest of us.

We are like the vassals in the village down there below the castle walls.

Our lives are verminous.

We are to be driven by at great speed towards Waitrose and safety.

We must accept our place in the world order we must!

YouCantTeuchThis · 07/01/2010 08:44

I couldn't believe when I had to use low range to get in and out of a p&t space at the supermarket the other day! Of course I didn't actually have either of the children with me...in this weather?!

MitchyInge · 07/01/2010 08:52

do you leave yours in high ratio the rest of the time?

harimosmummy · 07/01/2010 12:43

I agree with Nigelslaterfan

pandora69 · 07/01/2010 15:06

I regularly use my 4x4 to pull twunts in 2wd cars out of the ford near my house. I also used it to pull a twunt in a 2wd spinning his wheels trying to get up the big steep hill I live on (and then down a dirt track into the woods.) When I find a little car that can tow 2 700kg horses in a trailer I'll happily buy one, as it will cut down on fuel costs and stop me having to pay the 'Chelsea tractor' tax. But sadly for the 4x4 haters out there I will have to carry on driving my Shogun. It's full of bales of hay at the moment as our delivery driver couldn't get up the hill. I know you can't get a bale of hay in a Micra - we tried ut with my mum's.

I think all 4x4 haters should have a little sticker in their windscreens, so I can tell which cars I can ignore when they need towing out of somewhere.

mayorquimby · 07/01/2010 15:22

YABU he's being passed at 30 mph chances are they're only doing around 40-45

MrLSG · 07/01/2010 15:51

There are two problem with many 4x4s in this weather:

a) the drivers forget they they still only have the same number of brakes as everyone else, so take as long to slow down on ice as those vehicles with only 2WD.

b) most 4x4s are fitted with fat low-profile summer tyres which are crp in the snow. For snow driving (whether in a 4x4 or 2WD) you want narrow* tyres to cut through to the more solid surface underneath.

feralgirl · 07/01/2010 16:02

Iloathe 4x4s, they scare the hell out of me ever since a friend's car (and said friend) was crushed by a chelsea-tractor-twunt just driving over the top of him.

But today I really wanted one; I would have killed to be one of the smug bastards cruising up the hill that I got stuck on.

Poledra · 07/01/2010 16:14

Worst driving I've seen in this snow was a young girl in a Corsa - she had no bloody idea. I was stuck on a hill, skidding slowly backwards in my MPV, mostly on the wrong side of the road, but partly on the right carriageway. A car had stopped at the bottom of the hill to let me regain control. The Corsa driver overtook the car and tried to nip past me as I slid inelegantly all over the place. And blamed me when she got stuck

I got traction, drove away and left her to it, which was mean I suppose but I'm fairly unrepentant.

ihatetinselbob · 07/01/2010 16:30

stupid bloody 4x4 was right up my arse this morning as i tried to get to work. if i'd have slipped he'd have been straight into me.
the idiot in on of those huge great monster 4x4 across the road from me has just come round the corner to fast and hit a neighbours car.

harimosmummy · 07/01/2010 17:15

I have just cruised - rather elegantly, I might add - up the steep hill to my house.

Passing 3 'normal' cars stuck in the snow / ice.

As I drive an X5 (and an therefore the lowest of the low - or should that be the highest of the high! ) I didn't stop.

Partly because, as an X5 driver, other drivers expect nothing less!!

violethill · 07/01/2010 17:18

I read in the paper today that all the 4x4 owners are pissed off because they spend most of the year polluting the streets with their outsize tanks doing the school run, and the one time the damn things might come in useful, the schools are closed.

Oh the irony

outnumberedbymyboys · 07/01/2010 17:26

A 4x4 saved DH's life this week. If he had taken my car I would now be a widow. Hit by a twunt in a politicaly correct non 4x4. No matter how safely you drive its the other twats twits on the road that matter.
