in thinking that we see too many things as a "right"

I work for Iceland and we offer free home delivery if you spend over £25. this is obviously subject to availability.

because of the bad weather we were unable to do it today, the main road are bad enough but the town is made up of lots of estates, none of which have been gritted. a lot of houses are inaccessable by road and are on a bank, the banks are v icy (really dangerous) and the roads are even worse.

i have spent all morning fielding complaints and moans because we arent delivering. everything from "disgusting" to "how the fuck am i supposed to get this home" to "delivery is a basic right".

do we really live in a world where service is no longer enough? does anyone really see home delivery as a consumer right? there was a sign up telling people we werent delivering, i was telling customers as soon as they came in, why is it ok to shout at a shop worker because you dont get your own way?

its not ok, and no way is it a right. I certainly wouldnt think its ok to get people to risk their lifes just to get me my shopping.

PooCrumbsInYourBed · 06/01/2010 16:57

of course it's not okay to shout at a shop worker

I'm sorry you have had a rubbish day

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2010 16:59

people are often unjustifiably rude, sorry you have had such a rubbish day.

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 17:03

phew, feel better now ive got that off my chest. cant believe how rude people are!

WOW - when you said you worked for Iceland I thought I was going to have to moan at you for not returning all the money to Kent County Council, that they deposited with you

YANBU to expect people to be reasonable at all - after all you didn't order the snow and ice, or did you?

I think some people in this country think if they are rude, aggressive and unpleasant they will get their own way, no matter what, but it doesn't have to be that way. Manners are free as my Nan used to say. We can all have them...and use them...

Surely if there was a sign up it wasn't impossible for people to understand that the weather had made deliveries impossible - hope you hav kind customers tomorrow and abetter day.

claw3 · 06/01/2010 17:10

Someone from Icelands needs to be shouted at (not you) those prawns on a spoon they were advertising at Christmas looked disgusting!

YANBU especially as you made the effort to get to work in the snow.

mayorquimby · 06/01/2010 17:16

Yep people banging on about rights when they are actually talking about small courtesies which have been extended but they now feel entitled to get my wick also.

Madascheese · 06/01/2010 17:22

Hello. YANBU, it's unforgivable to shout at anyone, I hope you meet some nicer customers soon.

But it is frustrating, I live in a village with no shops. I have a toddler who needs to be fed. At the first sign of a snowflake this week a different supermarket rang me up and said 'we can't deliver your shopping, we can't prioritise deliveries either for those who have had their delivery cancelled today'

So that meant that although the roads were clearer today I still couldn't get my food because people who'd been lucky enough to have booked their delivery on the day it didn't snow got theirs. More snow is due tomorrow for the day they have rescheduled me for Seems slightly unfair somehow...but that's ok, I guess I finally get to empty the freezer.

Not saying it's Ok to be cross (and I wasn't - plus ended up with 2 lots of £10 off as a sorry gesture because I attempted to be pleasant to the poor harrassed staff who rang to tell me), but I was pretty frustrated!

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 17:29

madasacheese, that must be so frustrating! we dont do online shopping, so all the customers who were swearing and shouting at me actually had to come into the shop anyway to do their shopping! i have a headache now and feel all achey and stressed

claw, not tried them the frozen sandwiches are quite tasty though (seriously - we had to try them)

yanbu - they are being rude and inconsiderate. Funny how so many people who know their "rights" are the same ones as don't acknowledge any sense of personal responsibility.

Takver · 06/01/2010 17:44

YANBU at all. I had two infuriated phone messages today from a customer pissed off that she hadn't had her order (mail order company) - well, dear, if you didn't post us orders with no address on them and then leave phone messages with no return phone number, we might be able to help you!!!!

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 20:53

have calmed a little now. i think it was the redfaced harpy woman shrieking "how the fuck am i going to get this home?" who then left a trolley full of shopping on conveyor belt for me to put back (when i am only cashier) and got into a taxi that really got my goat. i undrestand that if you use the service all the time it can be annoying, but it is just that, a service - not a right!

What mayorquimby said.

For example, like P&T parking spaces... A favour not a right .

Sorry you had a bad day OP. Some people are just rude I'm afraid,

ronshar · 06/01/2010 21:03

Oh Lissielou. How rude some people are.

I find it quite unbelievable that people go into a shop, do their shopping, then leave it for someone else to bring home for them!

Lazy feckers.

chegirlsgotheartburn · 06/01/2010 21:06

Blimey it must be bad enough working in Iceland without being shouted at as well

Why do people think that if they cant get their car out of the drive, someone in a delivery van can negotiate ungritted roads?

We are spoiled, all of us.

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 21:11

exactly!! we were delivering everyday over Christmas ffs, if we cant do it, we cant do it!!

OP posts:
duckyfuzz · 06/01/2010 21:15

YANBU at all, soem people are ignorant and rude. If nasty woman was in a taxi why couldn't she jsut take it with her anyway?

differentID · 06/01/2010 21:20

it's not ok at all Lissie- can sympathise as am also on the front line of retail

wasabipeanut · 06/01/2010 21:23

YANBU - I get annoyed over rubbish service which I think is endemic in retail establishments all over the land BUT not being able to give free home delivery when people are being expressly advised to only travel in emergencies isn't exactly a service issue.

People blow a gasket over the slightest percieved inconvenience now - I hate it. I don't know when we all got so aggressive.

Sorry you had a shit day.

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 21:33

i do think the problem is (as chegirl says) we are spoilt!
