to think my mum is being very silly

My mum lives in Oxfordshire and her garden is under 1 foot of snow today and it is still snowing hard.

My brother and his gf are coming back from Dublin tonight. DB is pretty helpless generally and has asked mum to fetch him from Heathrow and take his gf home to north london and then bring him back to Oxford and mum has said she'll do it.

I know she is a grown adult and theoretically capable of making her own decisions but this seems to me to be really stupid. The weather is awful and still snowing, the emergency services are going to be horribly overstretched, there is a much greater chance of an accident than normal and there are loads of public transport options from Heathrow. DB will just have to be a bit less precious about catching buses.

So AIBU to think she really shouldn't go?

I live in oxford and I wouldn't drive 1 mile down road to sainsbury's let alone into london and back... Yanbu, your db is a selfish twunt! More mums should say no to their grown up ds's!

BIL sounds an idiot, but if that's what he wants to do then let him. I'd be unhappy if I expected my family to drive in an area hit severely by snow, especially if there is a public transport alternative.
I'm amazed at all these people who don't drive themselves to the airport or take public transport but expect extended family to run around after them.
Some people just don't grow up.

I dont know why he would want a lift in normal weather as there is a perfectly good bus service from Heathrow to Oxford

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 06/01/2010 21:46

BIL is being stupid and mean. When the lift was offered I am sure no one expected heavy snow. Give him some of your DCs toys to throw out of his pram.

geordieminx · 06/01/2010 21:48

Emergency services are advising only drive i that area if it is a matter of life or death.

OP - I would be having a real go if this was my brother & telling him they are to get pblic transport, a taxi or a damn room in a hotel but that your Mum will not be risking her life to run them around in this weather. Tell him to text her now. Prat.

BIL is being a twat.

If each adult can't manage their own luggage (usual disclaimer or very elderly, disabled etc) then they are taking too damn much.

Don't feel bad or fret over it, BIL should be ashamed to not have offered to do this in the snow in the first place. Twat.
