check the website they say. well i did, and it just says check the website.
once child needs to be out the door in thirtyfive minutes to catch the bus, the other in an hour and a half. putting the news up on the website at nine o clock is no good to me, or anyone.
grrr...

Where are you?
Local radio website here (S Beds) is MUCH better than any 'education' site

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 06/01/2010 06:23

No YANBU at all. I want to know about my school - am teacher. However, county site and bbc local site both say "Don't set out unless you have to" so I am assuming the school will shut. If not, I might not go anyway - we are high here and more snow expected later.

PortiaPie · 06/01/2010 06:24

I'm sitting here thinking the same. I've checked the school website which hasn't been updated. Checked the council website, which says check the school website! I'll join you in a grrrr too!

vvvodka · 06/01/2010 06:41

well, one down, two to go.
i have three kids in three different schools, and one of them has updated there status to say they are closed. not the one with the bus in ten minutes however.

Hoping our school is as I don't drive, school is on hill, am 6m preg and will have 2 in pushchair.

Council site says all public transport to schools has been cancelled - this was put up yesterday.

Dumbledoresgirl · 06/01/2010 06:53

I have just checked the websites of the 2 schools my children attend. As always, the secondary school has their site updated already (school closed) and the primary school has nothing. They texted me yesterday to say they would text if the school was closed - around 8:15. It doesn't bother me as I have nowhere to go, but for working parents it must be a nightmare.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 06/01/2010 06:55

Our school is being incredibly slow. I assume they are closed as all other in the area are, and they have updated, but ours has not.

PositiveAttitude · 06/01/2010 07:03

I can't seem to get on any of the local websites! Mega GGRrrrrrr!!!!

Well, mine are all in bed and I don't intend to wake them, so if the schools are open my DCs will be late!

Fizzylemonade · 06/01/2010 07:03

Local radio is best, we have a schools closure list read out. Yesterday our school opened but later contacted everyone at 12.30 to say come and collect them. Grrr.

Am hoping it is closed.

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 06/01/2010 07:04

Just had my confirmation - I'm off. BBC local radio station had my news before county website or school website.

DecorHate · 06/01/2010 07:05

Yanbu. Like DDG, our secondary school had it's website updated at 6.30 to say it was closed, nothing from the primary as yet.

The secondary school is close so dd could have walked there but lots of the pupils travel a long way on public transport so not surprised it has shut.... Primary school is 2 miles away - tbh if I hear the roads are bad I won't drive but I can't see why they can't decide now if they are open or not. Tis very annoying.

Am Grr at the snow anyway as supposed to be having friends over tonight and now will have to try to tidy up with children untidying as I go along....

LadyOfTheFlowers · 06/01/2010 07:07

No update on school website, local radio site has crashed, bloke on radio read list out but stopped at 'K' saying if you want the whole list, go to their site. I need to hear the 'L' list.

NomDePlume · 06/01/2010 07:18

the bbc local site is the most up to date for us but the main problem is that the head for DD's primary is a major procrastinator and leaves the decision to close until the last minute. He has been known to just leave a note on the school gates at drop off time, which is no good to me as I need to leave the house for work at 7.30 and the childminder can't have DD on a snow day (or rather I can't afford to pay her the £40+ extra she wants) so I need to know NOW.

The local radio site is down due to weight of traffic - that never happened before it was bought out by Global Radio....

To be honest, looking at the weather, the number of schools already closed and the complete lack of traffic on the very slushy roads I am assuming that DD's school will be closed (DS2's is) so I am not even bothering to get her up.

Lots of primary schools, expecially small one who may not have IT specialists onthe staff, don't actually maintain their own websites, but have to email the changes they want made to the company who look after it for them. So there's an inevitable delay in getting "we're closed" online. Ours just has a pemanent link to the council school closures page, which can be updated much faster.

borderslass · 06/01/2010 07:34

our local radio lists the schools closed in our case all the regions schools and colleges, but my son could be off for ages as he has a 40 mile journey each way and his is one of the few school closed in edinburgh, he'll not be going even if they reopen until its safe.

Just had a phonecall from another parent to say primary school is shut. Bush telegraph works faster than the school's alert system

borderslass · 06/01/2010 07:39

to many people trying to get on riven our radio site has gone down.

borderslass · 06/01/2010 07:41

we also have groupcall system where parents who are signed up to text alerts get told all info that way.

Nom - I too am at your childminder wanting £40 extra on a snow day. What's that all about?? Is that due to having the child all day as opposed to just before/after school?

What we've generally done is if in doubt and surrounding schools are closed and I haven't gotten confirmation one way or the other fairly soon in the morning, I just keep the kids home. I've never been questioned on it, but if there was an issue, I'd simply tell them we just couldn't get through the snow to get the kids in to school. After all, even if you DO get them in to school, soooo many kids will be missing (not to mention teachers), it will most likely not be that productive a day, IMO.

NomDePlume · 06/01/2010 08:30

Childminder texted me to say DD's school is closed but the BBC website and the council website still don't mention it

Childminder will be right though as she is on the early warning round robin thingummy.

WorzselMummage · 06/01/2010 08:35

Why on earth they can't just email everyone I'll never know.

NomDePlume · 06/01/2010 08:35

Triggles/Team Edward, yes, it is because she would be having her from 7.30am to 2pm, rather than from 7.30 til school drop off. Obviously, with more snow forecast it is likely to mean an extra £80 (I don't work fridays so it would be wed & thurs) on top of what I already pay. I don't begrudge the money, after all she is doing a job and should be paid for it, but I just don't have an extra £80 lying around to pay her for it. I have the leave left so I may as well use it.
