I ordered a load of half price toys which came in an enormous box - really huge. Half of it was filled with brown packing paper. I have uploaded a picture on my profile so you can see how insane the packaging was. I have emailed them to complain, but it was an email form so there was no way for me to attach the photos.

AIBU?

I just ordered a couple of things from there.

The box was fairly big in relation to the items.

But I'm not bothered because I have lotsa use for boxes right about now.

SmallShips · 05/01/2010 20:52

Tesco direct do the same.

The brown paper is especially annoying.

2madboys · 05/01/2010 20:53

No, yanbu. I had the same thing before Christmas. Four things rattling around in a massive box. All presents, two were damaged because of the rubbish packaging. I also complained to them as I ordered a toy for my nephew (I thought non-gender-specific), which then arrived with packaging constantly referring to 'her'. Not impressed at all.

IlanaK · 05/01/2010 20:58

It is not the large box that is a problem - I can flatten that or reuse. It is the mountains (and I mean literally mountains) of brown paper that practically dwarfed my toddler.

Its a pain but seems to be the packaging choice of every company now.

Squash it down and put it out with your recycling. its better than those polystyrene blocks

hormonalmum · 05/01/2010 21:01

Im with you OP. I ordered about 8 things from Boots - none massive and they arrived in 2 boxes. ridiculous given that the one item that was separate could quite easily have gone in the other box.

ELC are bad for this too. 1 item rattling round in a massive box with no "filling"

expatinscotland · 05/01/2010 21:03

Oh, I save that paper and use it as wrapping.

I had an active 14-month-old, a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old.

I think YABU.

Recycle it or use it as a wrapping paper - it's wonderful for that!

IlanaK · 05/01/2010 21:11

Recycling is all well and good. But surely not producing such waste in the first place is better? Especially when it is not needed?

I had the same today.

I think YABU as it is better for the environment than bubble wrap. Perhaps they buy standard sized boxes in bulk to keep delivery costs low and then supplement with the paper to sopt your goods being damaged.

I reuse or recycle the paper.

expatinscotland · 05/01/2010 21:23

You might think it's not needed.

But they're catering to a large number of people, a large number of items.

They probably see it as it's better to put as much as possible in in case there is a fragile item in the order.

I didn't find it excessive, tbh.

I've gotten two shipments from them in the past week.

I have to buy most things online as am in a rural area.

On the whole, I don't find their packaging excessive.

TBH, I usually open parcels after the kids are in bed in case there is bubble wrap or polystryene peanuts, etc.

The paper's great for wrapping paper.

yanbu

I ordered online from boots for the first time this christmas. I had ordered three tiny things and there came in a ginormous box, a real monster box.

lambanana · 05/01/2010 22:38

well I wish debenhams had packed my order like that before christmas.

Ordered straighteners as a gift, the box was dented and torn.

nail varnish, another gift, box was misshapen.

I dont know why I bother with debenhams I have never ever had anything than piss poor service.

snowedinwithJjandtheBean · 05/01/2010 22:48

i dont care how much packaging they use as it entertains the dcs for AGES,

BUT,

never ever have i had something from them that isnt damaged!
