to think that it is ridiculous to have cancelled all school busses and closed a number of schools before the snow has actually fallen?

Obviously once the snow has fallen then fair enough. But we all know that the met office can and do regularly get it wrong, and that it would only take a bit of wind to move the snow in another direction..

But here where I live they have announced on the radio that all the school busses have been cancelled, and that a number of schools will be closed tomorrow.

And as yet we have about five mm of snow.

How stupid.

Well we have had loads, and more forecast overnight, yet the schools are saying they are open

It tooks us ages to walk home and I fell, as did ds, so if it is any worse tomorrow, I don't care if it is open or not, they won't be going.

Marne · 05/01/2010 17:48

wannaBe- where do you live? we are in Dorset and no sign of any snow, people are planning to stay home tomorrow, school planing to close , the met office can get it wrong.

compo · 05/01/2010 17:49

Yanbu
it is beyond ridiculous

am in wiltshire.

We have a little bit of snow, and am told that surrounding areas have heavier snow, but still... until we actually have signifficant amounts it just seems so stupid..

thats odd we have had no snow here (kent) either noone has mentioned anything!.Having said that I dont know what our forcast is.

Wastwinsetandpearls · 05/01/2010 18:06

I teach in Dorset, we sent our students home with a letter reminding them if there is snow to check website and local radio as we will make the call then.

Apparantly the weather warning no longer effects us though.

Hando · 05/01/2010 18:10

Fernie - we are SE London / Kent borders and have had no snow.

Hope it snows, then we can have a nice lie in and watch dvds / play games all day! Dd loves having cheeky days off school.

fernie3 · 05/01/2010 18:12

I hope it snows too, one day back at school is plenty to now need a rest I think

Morloth · 05/01/2010 18:15

Stamps foot. I want some bloody snow. Everyone else is getting snow, where is mine?

Greenshadow · 05/01/2010 18:18

They should have done that here in Glos.
By the time buses decided not to run, the roads were all blocked and many buses trapped.
With the 'wrong kind of snow' roads can be blocked very quickly and I think this time round the met office could pretty well guarantee that there was going to be a lot of snow locally.

ellokitty · 05/01/2010 20:35

I'm also in Wilts... but in fairness, the weather warning for this area has been upgraded to extreme weather warning, with the met office predicting with 80% certainty that there will be "Very Heavy Snowfall" and they are predicting a minimum of 15cm of snow, up to 30cm and possibly up to 40cm. It is the worst prediction on the Met office website!

Also, in Swindon whilst the busses have been cancelled, only one school as yet has been closed - and that is apparently due to a heating issue. No other school here yet has been closed. However, the local Honda factory has been shut, all workers there have been given the day off work. As a teacher (in Swindon), I've been told I'm expected to make it in tomorrow unless I hear otherwise tomorrow. People working in local businesses have already been given the day off - Honda is not the only place allowing people to work from home / not expecting them in / shutting down for the day!

karen2205 · 05/01/2010 21:06

I reckon more sensible to make the decision to close today, before the close of business, giving people a little time to make alternative arrangements for tomorrow, than to wait till the morning before making the decision, when lots of people will have started making journeys on potentially dangerous roads to get to schools. But yes, it does run the risk of having schools closed for no particularly good reason, causing parents to need to make alternative childcare arrangements, for no particularly good reason, if no snow materialises.

brook1 · 05/01/2010 21:18

Damned if they do, damned if they dont though arnt they. Most people would like a bit of notice to make other arrangements for things like schools being closed because they need childcare or have to take a day off work.

They must be pretty confident of the weather being bad in order to announce closure of schools and cancellation of buses in advance.

I'm up near Manchester, and if you get half as much as weve got then its unlikely you'll get out, and apparantly, "darn sarf" its gonna be much worse overnight.
