Do you mean you don't like being called Mum by doctors as in GPs? I think that'd annoy me if my GP said that to me seeing he knows who I am

I've no problem with a doctor or nurse in a hospital referring to me as mum - they don't have a bog who I am, other than being the patients mother, for a start. (mind you the only time I've been in a hospital and called mum was in an emergency situation where they could have called me Humper Dingle from Ningle Bingle and I don't think I'd have care - other things on my mind!)

I'm called Mammy by my children, though I can live with being called Mummy by another adult talking to my children in reference to me have to admit Mommy makes me flinch a teeny bit. However my own Mum insists on referring to me to my children as Mama - which does drive me around the twist!!

yes I did mean doctors in hospitals calling me mum

If they don;t know my name why call me anything?

pandora69 · 04/01/2010 14:56

I know what you mean. I cringe when my best friend goes on about her new friends - the local Mummies group! They have mummy nights out, mummy drinking sessions, mummy this, that and the other. Get a grip! Has becoming the mother of a child meant that their entire life up to that point has been wiped out and there is only the 'mummy-ness' left. I am sure I would be looking forward to my holiday with them a bit more if I knew what they were actually called, instead of just 'The Mummies.'

YANBU, I truly find this vom inducing.

When you hear things like 'ooh, you are such a lovely Mummy', or I'm going out with my Mummy friends', or even just when people inroduce themselves as X's Mummy' Argh, I cringe and hate it.

I think Mum, or parent are far better words to use.

I always imagine women who say that wear pink Disney clothes and say 'whoopsy daisy', instead of 'oh fuck', too.

muggglewump · 04/01/2010 15:02

Oh yes, and they have usernames such as 'Mummytoicklewicklefairyprincesses'.

BelleDameSansMerci · 04/01/2010 15:06

YANBU

I love being called "mummy" by my DD (2.3) but loathed being called "Mummy SurnameX" before DD was born.

DD has called me mum once or twice but I just say "I assume you mean mummy?" in raised eyebrow voice and normal service is resumed...

FoxyRevenger · 04/01/2010 16:17

I don't get why a Doctor would ever call anybody 'Mummy'?

If someone is in hospital being treated for anything else they are called by their name. Unless I am mistaken and they've taken to calling patients tumour or MRSA to save looking at their notes.

mama2moo · 04/01/2010 16:24

A 40 year old man I used to work still called his mum 'mummy' on the phone and it made me cringe! He was very posh though so I guess it was normal for him

largeginandtonic · 04/01/2010 16:37

Midwives call you mum to be too when prg.

Not all but quite a few.

I suppose if it is your first baby you are quite excited by all.

I didn't do it. You have the rest of your life to be hollered 'Mummy'.

You spend months coaxing them to say it and years refusing to answer
