to book a holiday with 3 month old ?

We are planning to go to a holiday cottage in Devon in the middle of May for a week to see my best friend - we've stayed in this cottage 4 times and it has normal facilites like washing machine, tumble dryer etc. It's a 4 hour drive, we have an estate car so taking baby stuff won't be a problem. Baby is due on the 24th so would be about 3.5 months old.

When I said about it to my parents you would think I was planning a round the world trip.

Am I being ridiculously naive to think that logistically it really can't be that hard to stay away in a cottage for a few days ?

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Depending on your baby you may need to stop along the way, although mine would have done it in one trip at that age.

Have a great holiday

Nefertari · 03/01/2010 10:02

We took our dd on holiday at ten weeks old. My DP decided a change of scenery would be nice for me.

Later on, our ds went on his first holiday at 4 months.

And babies can be looked after anywhere. they need feeding, nappies, cleaning and sleep, and all these things can be done anywhere.

Go and enjoy your holiday, baby won't care where s/he is.

Rindercella · 03/01/2010 10:02

YANBU. It will probably be one of the easiest holidays you will have with a small child!

Good luck on or around 24th!

loobylu3 · 03/01/2010 10:02

It sounds absolutely fine. I'm assuming that you only have the one baby and no older children to worry about too? Ca they provide a cot for the baby or would you bring one with you?

Ivykaty44 · 03/01/2010 10:03

Sound fine to me aswell. I went to devon for a wedding when dd1 was one month old and we just took pram/carry cot and change bag with a couple extra changes of clothes and a bag of nappies

Fibilou · 03/01/2010 10:03

We would need to stop on the way ! i can't manage more than 2 hours sitting still

I went to ibiza with a 12 week old lat year and it was fab! boob and nappies and a change of clothes was all he needed

enjoy x

Sounds like a lovely idea, go for it.

IMHO it's easier to travel when they are younger, especially if they sleep well in the car.

Fibilou · 03/01/2010 10:06

We would take a travel cot or our bassinette which fits easily in the car. Or the big pram (silver cross old fashioned one) might be the best idea.

No older children - she'll be the first

Went camping with a 14 week old - it's not difficult just hard work.

We went away for a week to a North Yorkshire cottage when DD was 12 weeks old. It was probably a couple of hours drive away.

I was fine, no problem at all, and no harder work than being at home.

Only problem was the rain every day - typical UK summer weather! I did say if we had a nother Id have no problem going abroad even.

MrsSantosloves2010 · 03/01/2010 10:16

Sounds perfect timing - old enough for you to have bf sorted and too young to want anything more than milk and sleep and a wee bit of interaction. sounds absolutely fantastic - Hope you hava great time

threetimemummy · 03/01/2010 10:16

Sounds fine!! We cam across to the UK for the first time, for a MONTH !!, with an 7 and 1/2 week old! (first baby as well)

Have fun!!

WidowWadman · 03/01/2010 10:20

We rented a cottage halfway up a hill in Wales when the daughter was 11 weeks old. We had to use a wheelbarrow and walk 200 yards uphill to get our stuff from the car to the cottage. We had a fantastic time.

girlsyearapart · 03/01/2010 10:22

No you are def not BU.

I am due with dc3 end july/beg august and we had been planning on going to Spain in September. (don't tell your parents )

picc · 03/01/2010 10:27

perfect timing for the reasons MrsSantosloves2010 says.

Travelled a lot with DS until he was 7 months. It gets more complicated as they get older (well, he's only 11 months now, so not exactly sage voice of experiene! ) but getting away when he was younger and having the chance to see people (and get help from people) really helped me.

Sawyer64 · 03/01/2010 10:35

We went to Cornwall when DD1 was 3 weeks old.Was great, nice to have a change of scenery. We stayed in a hotel,so it was very convenient, but we did have one difficult mealtime with my DD1 not settling, and getting a few "tuts" from the other guests.

You obviously wont have this problem, being in your own accomadation.

Be prepared for a couple of unsettled nights/days though, as they do seem to pick up the change in scenery and routine.

Go for it!

ChippingIn · 03/01/2010 10:36

My best friend started taking her DD camping with us at 10 weeks (and would have much earlier if that had been when we usually went!!) - so a holiday in a cottage is a walk in the park!!

Anyway, start as you mean to go on, do what you are happy with and don't second guess yourself because of other peoples comments - try to let it roll of your back.

You'll have a long list of things you want to take, but at the end of the day, there really isn't anything you can do without (or go & buy!), so don't get yourself in a tizzy over remembering everything.

Oh LOL just remembered, one set of friends forgot the travel cot and the baby (about 2.5 months) slept in a drawer - just like in the 'olden days'!

violethill · 03/01/2010 10:37

Easy!

We used to camp when the kids were little, and managed with two toddlers and a 12 week old, so a holiday cottage will be fine. Agree with others - make the most of it - it'll be your easiest holiday for a good few years

It'll be lovely.

We went to Pembrokeshire with DS when he was about the same age, similar length drive. It was brilliant.

You'll be knackered but a change of scenery is good, and if you're suffering a bit of cabin fever it'll give you a bit of perspective.

I'm expecting DC2 in July and planning a trip to France at some point in September I think... More concerned about DS than the new one!

Guad · 03/01/2010 10:44

We got married when ds2 was 3 months old and nipped about all over the place. It's pretty easy at that age I think, you'll probably have a great time.

TheCrackFox · 03/01/2010 10:49

It is a lot easier to go away on holiday before they learn to crawl.

YANBU

BikeRunSnowflake · 03/01/2010 11:13

I used to do a lot of long journeys with DS whwen he was tiny - mum is 6 hours away, and we went to visit every 5 or 6 weeks. We'd leave v early - dark in the winter - so he'd be asleep anyway, and stopped a couple of times for a feed, a clean nappy and a wiggle on the way. No probs.

He is now 16 months old and won't sit still for 2 minutes. This is much more of a prob for long journeys.

As for a small, immobile baby in a strange environment - easy. It's when they start moving/falling down stairs/opening the knife drawer/climbing on coffee tables/pulling over chairs that the trouble begins and you darn't leave your own hoen with familiar pitfalls!

MrsMellowdrummer · 03/01/2010 11:32

Sounds lovely. We took our then 3 month old little girl with us to Centre Parcs a couple of years back, and it was the nicest holiday. Much easier at 3 months in my experience, than when you're faffing around with weaning, or when they're mobile. All the tiring things like night feeds etc you'd be doing at home anyway, so there's no real difference, and if you know the cottage well it's easy for you to plan what to take.

Bet you'll have a great time!
