why does DH put juice cartons in the cardboard recycling bin? Why? He has a degree and everything.

I just. Don't. Understand. It's as if every time I tell him that juice cartons need to go in a separate box he hears "lah lah lah lah lah doo doo bi boo". This is one single dimensional piece of information. Just one. A child could understand. Why, why WHY?

My sympathies. My DH does this, he puts cardboard in the recycling bin.

We have nowehre that recycles cardboard. I have told him this. Endless. Times.

AvadventCalendar · 02/01/2010 22:08

We had a fella come from the council doing a door to door survey and one of the questions was did we know that Tetra packs could go in the paper recycling (I didn't) so are you certain you can't too?

Jacksmama · 02/01/2010 22:09

My stepdad puts empty milk jugs back in the fridge.

Men Are Weird.

Cadelaide · 02/01/2010 22:10

DP does this, we have a complicated system and every single time he bins something he asks, in an irritated manner; "So where does this go then?".

I suppose he simply doesn't want to learn, really.

hippipotamiHasLost77lbs · 02/01/2010 22:11

As far as I know you can now (and have been for some time) recycle Tetra paks / juice cartons.
In our area in any case...

ruddynorah · 02/01/2010 22:13

not where we are

duckyfuzz · 02/01/2010 22:15

why do they need to go in a spearate box? ours don't

andirobobo · 02/01/2010 22:17

My DH does this with cardboard - just shoves it in the general bin, and the same with bottles and cans. He gets it waved in his face - this can be recycled! Even the kids do it to him now - the nearly 3 year old understands more!!

JaneS · 02/01/2010 22:22

He has a degree in recycling?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 02/01/2010 22:24

Mine puts nothing in the recycling bin - would rather fish it out of the recycling bin into the bin than from the bin into the recycling.

havoc · 02/01/2010 22:32

My DH thinks the kitchen table is the recyling bin!

Our council sent round a note saying we couldn't recycle juice cartons. It was a while ago, so might have changed by now, though.

DorindaG · 02/01/2010 22:33

Mine's the same - always putting recyclable stuff in the regular bin - arrrgh, it's like there's some kind of mental blockage. He's got a degree too!

Maleeka · 02/01/2010 22:38

Mine is the complete opposite, kinda like the recycling police! If i put a scrap of paper in the bin, its "hands in the air!!!"

pjmama · 03/01/2010 00:00

Mine once put a big heavy hardbacked book into the paper recycling bag. "Well, it's paper isn't it?!

brimfull · 03/01/2010 00:02

ah but was it a Russell Group Degree -

SlartyBartFast · 03/01/2010 00:03

my dh puts egg shells in the vegetable peelings bin, the one that goes into the recycling bin, where they DONT take egg shells!!

NewnameSameoldme · 03/01/2010 00:04

mine has 2 degrees and he's completely useless

edam · 03/01/2010 00:07

Um, I'm sure our council says we should put empty juice cartons in with the cardboard. At least that's what we've been doing... and I know I checked when it all changed about a year ago.

Think it's all a racket anyway, our council also says to put tins and bottles (plastic and glass) in the same container. Can't see how that works at all.

GrendelsMum · 03/01/2010 10:04

Mine carefully washes out all Tetrapak - and then I remind him we can't recycle it anymore, and I collect it and put it in the bin.

Edam - in certain places, they have machines that sort all the different types of recyclable material into different places. For example, in the US and Canada, various cities put it all into the same place, and it all gets split up - there are videos you can see and they are fascinating. (DH has colleagues that work in this area and showed me their video.) I think that glass and plastic are sorted by comparing weight, but can't quite remember.

Jillydix · 03/01/2010 11:46

He Is A Man. Honestly, that is the only answer. Mine eats leftovers and then leaves the empty plate in the fridge. Maybe he thinks it will levitate to the dishwasher? But after 15 years I've learnt not to sweat the small stuff. However, if the recycling is really getting to you, I suggest putting a huge notice about the juice cartons on the dustbin, fridge and every other place he is likely to look in the kitchen. Lots of men are visual learners!

GoldenSnitch · 03/01/2010 11:58

We can put Tetrapaks in our recycling bag and egg shells in the composting waste

Every now and again, the council prints an extra page in the local paper telling what can and can't be recycled and I cut it out and stick it up next to the bin for DH.

You could get your children to make one for your DH maybe? That should shame him into learning what goes where

flockwallpaper · 03/01/2010 12:14

I sympathise too. It drives me mad. DH has zero interest in recycling, despite supposedly caring about the natural environment. It is me who ends up hanging half upside down in the green wheelie bin removing the plastic milk cartons.

HappyMummyOfOne · 03/01/2010 12:16

Our cardboard container says tetra paks are fine so we put jiuce, milk cartons etc in.

primarymum · 03/01/2010 12:26

just about everything goes into our recycling bin, paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, material, milk cartons, cans, the lot! All goes into the same green plastic bag and off it goes, once a week. The only thing they really get annoyed about is polystyrene, the machine can't cope!

MamaVoo · 03/01/2010 12:57

My DH is like Maleeka's, one of the recycling police. I have no wish to understand his complicated system and tend to leave all plastic/glass/tins on the draining board for him to deal with, so it's not just men who are useless
