Because my new neighbours just banged on the wall about 10 seconds in!

We aren't a loud family, we don't have big screaming rows, we don't have parties or loud music, we haven't ever done any banging type of DIY in the house before, just painting. The only noise we make is the hoover (necessary), ds singing and shouting (inevitable, he's 2.5) and the odd loud telling off ds gets which isn't constant as he's a good boy most of the time.

Surely it's unreasonable to complain that soon about one tiny act of DIY? I hate confrontation and now I feel scared in case they come round causing trouble if we make any noise!

Certainly doesn't sound you were being unreasonable.

we had a neighbour like this and was so glad when we sold and moved into a detached.

Fingers crossed they were just having a bed day.

Thanks, I hate this kind of thing since we do try to be as considerate as possible!

wtf! it's lunchtime! perhaps they're hungover

YouSaidWHAT · 02/01/2010 14:22

do it again and see if they bang back, if they do, do it again, then if they come round then you can tell them you was doing some diy what the hell can they say to that?!

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 02/01/2010 14:27

Maybe they banged because they thought it was going to be a long banging session but YANBU.

nannynobnobs · 02/01/2010 15:01

Maybe they thought you were banging at them to get them to stop making noise.
My dad had a noisy family next door for 20 years. They actually got on ok with us but played really loud music, loud tv, late night hoovering etc. My dad would bang savagely on the wall when they got too loud and they'd usually rein it in. Sometimes they'd just bang back!

Kbear · 02/01/2010 15:06

go round and ask if they need an ambulance as you heard them banging on the wall and assumed there was an emergency

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/01/2010 17:45

yanbu - least you are doing it at lunchtime - unlike my neighbours a few weeks ago - crack of dawn it was!!

MrsWeasley · 02/01/2010 17:49

My neighbours drill at 12 oclock in the night, you sound a dream neighbour to have!

PreRaphaeliteGirl · 02/01/2010 17:59

YANBU

Perhaps they are being over sensitive today.

Hope there are no more pegs to bang in! Perhaps you need to see when they are out next time?

I hope they have left you in peace today. i hate confrontation too so I know what you mean!

NeedaNewName · 02/01/2010 18:15

Go and ask them if there is a problem otherwise it will fester and become bigger than it is and cause a problem. Do not start banging in more nails to annoy them, thats just childish.

Unless you have really unreasonable neighbours (then I could see your concern) you need to communicate with them, its not about confrontation.

When we moved into our new house we went and saw both sets and asked them to let us know if we got too noisy or made too much noise early in the morning or too late at night, esp with having young children. Both sets told us not to be so daft, but it set the tone that they knew we were approachable and hopefully they would let us know if we got too loud.

madamearcati · 02/01/2010 19:08

Maybe they were just hammering something into their own wall !

mcflumpy · 02/01/2010 19:16

I'm with Blondes on this, YANBU, hit next door to us starts his DIY at 9pm most nights. When he's not having a party that is...

mcflumpy · 02/01/2010 19:17

That shouldve been 'git' next door to us...predictive text...

Hando · 02/01/2010 20:16

Predictive text on the pc? Or can you MN via mobile?

providentielle · 02/01/2010 23:38

YANBU, you are entitled to do some DIY in your own home, especially at that time of day.

The day we moved into our 1st floor flat the woman from downstairs came up and asked us to be quiet, we were moving in! Moving furniture and boxes! I spent the 1st night in my new home teary and scared to put my things away because of her.

Nice way to start that neighbourly relationship. It got worse from there but the new people are lovely thank goodness.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 03/01/2010 01:16

Thanks all, no there are no more pegs or anything to be hammered in (it was a random short length of dowel that's been stuck out of the staircase since we moved in a year ago, dp finally decided to give it a knock to see if it'd go in or need to be sawn off, that's all)

Just hope they're not going to start getting arsey over every little noise, I'm having a baby in may, they won't like all the crying! (Tough!!)

Maybe they'd been watching The Poseidon Adventure and thought you were trapped?
