To demand that my son does not say "candy"?

I rather suspect I am. He says "cayndy" in a very american accent. I HATE it. I snap that he is not american and the word is SWEETS, or CHOCOLATE

erm, depending on whether he is talking about sweets or chocolate

It drives me up the wall, this fake american accent.

well of course!!! There's nothing wrong with 'high school' but there is nothing wrong with secondary school. There's nothing wrong with candy (if you're american!) but there's nothing wrong with sweets!!! I don't see why perfectly good words have to be changed for no reason.

And spoken in a fake accent.

My dcs like Ben 10 and are forever coming out with Americanisms - especially my (nearly) 5 y.o. dd, who speaks in an American accent half the time. It drives me mad.

CurseBetweenUs · 02/01/2010 12:26

My son got into the habit of asking for "a quarter" whenever he saw a ride outside a shop. It used to really, really wind me up

But then, we were in the US last year and he wanted 25c to feed some ducks. He asked "mum, can I have a quart ... err ... can I have some money for the bird food?" pmsl

TheCrackFox · 02/01/2010 12:32

DS2 has taken to saying "awesome" every 10 seconds (I blame Ben 10 for this).

Phoenix4725 · 02/01/2010 12:40

I went to high school somewhere back in 1980`s ish .Now its all collages which though something you do after you finish school

StanleyFletcher · 02/01/2010 13:05

I teach at and my kids go to an International School and I am constantly fighting the good fight against the traaaaaansatlatic accent. I will not tolerate candy, wader (water), parday (party). Bloody hell, there are hundreds of others that I can't think of. DD who is 6 has this weird accent that she uses with her friends that I detest and then comes home and speaks 'scottish' . DS is 5 and he has hung on to his accent a bit longer (or he is less socially adroit than DD). A few months after he started his pre-school teacher was trying to apologies to me, through tears of laughter) that DS had fallen off the swing during outside play onto his arse (or ass ). The staff rushed to help him but all collapsed into laughter when he should 'Ooowwww - ah've hurt ma willy' in a broad scottish accent.

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 02/01/2010 13:15

I get mad about 'Candy', 'Zee', 'trash' and 'erb', too.

I hate fake american accents, also. One of my friends (who was 21 at the time) insisted on speaking with an American twang and using their words. She would say 'mom' instead of 'mam', too. There was no need for it.

I'm sure Americans don't say 'sweets', 'zed' and 'mam' to try and be British for no apparent reason.

Morloth · 02/01/2010 13:18

DS's accent/word usage bounces around the world. There is no point fighting it. Welcome to globalisation.

YANBU.

According to DD "the mailman's here", she also talks about garbage.

droitwichmum · 02/01/2010 14:02

Oooh I'm glad its not just me. Over the Christmas holidays I have had candy, the mailman, the trash and the one that really got me - the backyard!

Goblinchild · 02/01/2010 14:51

Introduce them to another Americanism...chores.
And much practical experience of same.

Kaloki · 02/01/2010 14:52

Drives me nuts too! I hate American pronunciations/word replacements. Though the spellings are the worst, eg. color.

MadameDefarge · 02/01/2010 14:58

pity me then, as exp is Canadian and ds has the weirdest Norf Lunnon/Canadian accent...plus trash, candy, and other assorted crimes against interesting English.

Dominique07 · 02/01/2010 15:06

Morloth!!! No point fighting it?
We are teaching our children about our culture and our language, thats the parents' job, to teach our children about their identity.
Do the French let their children walk around quoting americanisms? No, because they want to preserve their culture and they try very hard to do that.

MadameDefarge · 02/01/2010 15:13

apart from le weekend, and parking, eh, Dominique?

purpleduckUnderTheMistletoe · 02/01/2010 15:18

Just as I, as a canadian, with children who live in the uk, am trying to gte them to be the teeniest bit canadian.

So I will fight you lot tooth and nail for my "garbage" "sidewalks" and "Tom AY toe"

BTW, I have one thing to say in defence of "pardy" etc (which actually I hate as well).... "wa er". There are "T"'s people, lets not be afraid to use 'em!!!

purpleduckUnderTheMistletoe · 02/01/2010 15:20

Oh, and I have noticed that my neices and nephews seem to be increasingly using slang from here and Australia. Its a pandemic.

Blu · 02/01/2010 15:30

I stood behind a woman in the butcher who began every request with 'could I get...' 'can I get..'

It's 'could I HAVE' or 'I'd like' 6 sausages!

'airplane' is also hideous.

NancyDrewRocks · 02/01/2010 15:33

DC's go to an international school and despite my frequent interference on the matter they eat candy, get rides to school not lifts, put the trash out and help me with the grocery shopping.

Drives me mental!

purpleduckUnderTheMistletoe · 02/01/2010 15:34

why is airplane offensive?

MinnieMummy · 02/01/2010 15:38

'Santa' was winding me up irrationally over the festive period. It's Father Christmas!!

Had no idea people in the west midlands say 'mom' although that does explain why DH does to his mother (I got VERY upset when he wrote it in a mother's day card one year though, something along the lines of 'I'm not American! Or your mother!!' )

lovechoc · 02/01/2010 15:43

because in the UK it should be said 'aeroplane' that's why - NOT airplane

FlamingBird · 02/01/2010 15:44

Oooh me too.

And they are f*ckin hamburgers NOT "crabby paddys" (they haven't sussed that it should be patties)
