..that they are going too far the other way.Not recognising that there are at least as many dangers to a baby from being too cold and that babies being so small lose heat far more rapidly than an adult or older child.

YABU. Most of us know how to keep our children from getting hypo or hyperthermia. And frostbite Are there many cases of frostbite in infants in Western Europe? I sincerely doubt it.

My MiL used to wind me up no end covering DS up with a blanket when he was napping as a baby. He didn't need it, but she said it made him cosy .

He was a January baby so I was very strict to follow the guidelines as, apparently, the winter months are when most incidents of SIDs occur, and yes, I was very paranoid and PFB about it all. He's now almost 1 and I tend to keep his room at around 20 which he feels comfortable at wearing a vest, PJs and 2.5 tog grobag. The guidelines say that between 16 - 18 is best, but what age are these set for - newborn to 6 months or above and even toddlers?

We've been given lots of grief by well-meaning relatives about allegedly not keeping our daughter warm enough when we basically just stuck to official advice.

My cousin, bless her, told me that babies are used to an ambient temperature of 37 degees Celsius from the womb, so that's what I should be aiming for with blankets and stuff and snowsuits.

Made me angry to no end. My HV and my MW just told me to ignore the well-meaners and carry on what we were doing. Daughter is still alive and healthy one year on and hasn't lost any limbs to frostbite, so I guess we've done alright.

Roffle if this is about my sock thread. DS seems to have survived so far and I hardly think crawling around a centrally heated house barefoot is about to give him hypothermia.

In fact he was running around naked from the waist down this morning and seemed perfectly happy to me.

I'm another one who finds it disturbing to see babies bundled up in shops. I'm absolutely paranoid about DS overheating and always dress him in easily removed layers which can be taken off with the minimum disturbance.
