To want to punch ALL the people...

... who talk about wanting to 'loose weight'? On any weight loss topic on this site and on others I would say that about 75% of people write loose when they clearly mean lose. ARGH!!! I am not overly pedantic about grammar and spelling etc (well I am a little) but the amount of times I see this drives me to distraction!

Tis a curse, my dh wrote walldrobe instead of wardrobe, I had never realised that was what he's been saying all these years (his accent you see). Still I didn't punch him, but it is an affliction...

Tortington · 31/12/2009 13:07

chop them up into little pieces and feed them to the pedants.

CommonNortherner · 31/12/2009 13:09

Maybe our enormously fat fingers get jammed a bit between the I and the P and so do two instead of one?

fillimum · 31/12/2009 13:09

Because it is boring me GibbonInARibbon. I don't really have a huge amount of interest in defending my experience, qualifications or job ability based on a lack of tolerance for grown adults misusing words on forums. [yawn].

Happy New Year, y'all!

But lose and loose sound different - so why do people confuse them in writing? They don't muddle them up when talking.

Littlered, would be fascinated to find out more about your research...

franke · 31/12/2009 13:13

Instead of getting a sore hand perhaps you should embrace the concept of "I'm going to loose weight" in the sense of "I'm going to let this weight loose, I'm going to set it free"

[hippy and floaty]

loolop · 31/12/2009 13:13

Slightly different I know but back in the day when I used to watch Big Brother - it used to set my tetth on edge that they all used to whine 'i'm up for nomination' No you are not, you have been NOMINATED and you are now up for EVICTION. Hmmm but maybe that's just me! Mis-use of To and Too also annoys me!

havoc · 31/12/2009 13:19

I've just realised that I'm guilty of the lose/loose thing. My defence is that it was very late, and I was typing too quickly.

I'm very, very sorry if I offended you. Come over here an punch me, if you dare - there's a lot to hit! It will be lovely to met someone without any faults.

saggyhairyarse · 31/12/2009 13:19

Can't stand the word 'loose', my Mum uses it to describe diarrheoa...YANBU!

JaneS · 31/12/2009 13:23

Fillimum, only one person has asked about what kind of job you do, and I think they were being curious, not asking you to 'defend' anything!

Edam - thanks for the interest. Atm I'm doing lots of work on fonts vs. handwritten script, but the more work I do, the more I notice that there's something very complex going on between visual memory, phonetic understanding, short-term processing in the mind and muscle memory, all of which contribute to what eventually goes down on the page.

Btw, in my accent 'lose' and 'loose' are homophones. But I know some people say 'lose' with more of a zzz in it.

GenieoftheTramp · 31/12/2009 13:33

Quote from OP, "I am not overly pedantic about grammar and spelling etc (well I am a little) but the amount of times I see this drives me to distraction!"

Think you'll find it's number of times...

edam · 31/12/2009 13:54

Littlered, tell me even more!

ds is now six but he's still using 'incorrect' past tenses for some words because I can't bear to correct him - it's just so impressive when small children do this because even though they've never heard anyone say 'goed' instead of 'went' they've worked out that's what it should be. They have worked out their own mental model of English grammar which is fairly amazing.

Not that ds says 'goed' any more but there are still some words where he's using his own version of the past tense.

Punch is a little strong.... having said that, I dislike the use of weary instead of wary!

satc2bringiton · 31/12/2009 14:11

Yes... go on, punch all the people then

HogMoonay · 31/12/2009 14:12

Shockers I was about to add that one, it makes me pull my hair out and want to punch!

Flightattendant · 31/12/2009 14:13

yabRidiculous

I hate people who start threads about pointless nonsense then bugger off after a few minutes because they are 'bored'

[yawn] right back at you.

shockers · 31/12/2009 14:19

My DH says cut-el-ry instead of cutlery

overmydeadbody · 31/12/2009 14:21

violence is never the answer

kneedeepinthedirtylaundry · 31/12/2009 14:24

Fillimum, you need to 'losen' up.

Sorry...

poinsettydawg · 31/12/2009 14:38

'number of times', not 'amount of times'.
