Not to put socks on my baby?

DS is 14 months but not walking yet, so I don't put shoes on him, and socks last precisely 0.05 seconds before being thoroughly explored, ripped off and lost, so I never bother with them on their own - his feet are warm enough in the footmuff anyway, and if I get him out of the pushchair anywhere it's usually heated.

But today at the Children's Centre I had about four people exclaim at his socklessness and one woman told me twice that he didn't have any socks on (in case I hadn't noticed?) and that he had cold feet (he didn't).

Admittedly it was colder than usual in there today since it has been closed over Christmas, but he didn't seem upset by having bare feet and they didn't even feel that cold to me. Why are people obsessed with socks?

My MIL laughs at me for putting navy tights on my 15wk DS. He pulls his socks off, so tights work wonders. His have anti slip dots on the soles for all the standing he wants to do.

Go for tights- buy them in navy, put them under trousers and no one will know!

We have got some furry boots from Clarks with a string pull around the ankle that is IMPOSSIBLE for dd (also 14 months) to get off. So her little feet stay warm. Sorry but I would also be abit [shock} about bare feet on a baby in December as you can get shoes that stay on.

If you were outdoors and his feet were open to the elements I might be a bit Hmm but otherwise what's the problem.

Have you tried

GAP triple roll socks

Next rib socks

Asda Tote socks

H&M and Boots do similar to the 3 links above too.

Asda towelling socks

Asda terry socks

Tot socks

Trumpette socks

In the summer I don't care if DS walks around barefoot where ever he is however.

working9while5 · 06/01/2011 17:20

My family are firm believers in taking socks off to aid mobility. At Gymboree (yes, cringe etc etc), they make you take 'em off for this reason. Not bothered about the dirt, because I have a crawler so his hands are manky for most of the day. If I was a sockless type I would wash and dry feet at nappy changes, as I do hands.

On the other hand, it's really cold at the moment. Sockless in your warm dry home, yeah. Out in cold places? Brrrrr.

beanlet · 06/01/2011 17:20

Socks are crap. My DS wears tights under his trousers.

tabulahrasa · 06/01/2011 17:26

I'd tell you he had no socks on - I'd assume he'd pulled them off and thrown them away, so I'd tell you in case they were missing somewhere

unless it was freezing and his feet were bright red, then maybe I'd be doing it in a judgey way Blush

YANBU. DD (8 months) never wear socks. If we are going outside I'll put some merino booties on her which the sling helps keep on. As soon as she is inside she goes barefoot again. Slightly cold feet aren't going to harm your baby, and mean she can feel the floor.

I never wear socks either indoors, or outdoors if warm :)

I don't always put a hat on DD either Shock, a bit of wind and rain won't hurt her.

tinkertitonk · 06/01/2011 17:48

Small children are wired weird and have extra-hot feet all the time. DS's anti-sock rebellion is telling you this.

Confuzled · 06/01/2011 17:50

DS never wore socks. I had that, too, often enough that at a pound a comment, I could probably afford to buy a posh bottle of wine.

Feet can be washed. A warm baby with warm feet is fine. Buggy snuggles are toasty. People need to butt out on insignificant trivia.

iloveyankees · 06/01/2011 17:57

Not sure if I can mention eb*y but search 'sock ons'. I wish I knew about these when I had my 2 they were always pulling there socks off lol

nappyaddict · 06/01/2011 18:01

Socks on didn't work here.

MrsTumbles · 06/01/2011 18:11

DD used to suck her socks all the time when we went out (with her feet still in them!). I used to carry at least 3 pairs and swap them at various times when she got them too soggy!

Just on another note, at all the soft plays I have been to there are 'rules' that says that socks have to be worn at all times. I always thought it was a pretty stupid rule as it can be hard to get grip on some of the climbing areas, but I was chatting to the Manager of one once who said it?s a hygiene requirement to stop the spread of varrucas (sp?) etc (I'm guessing there were lots of parents running around barefoot too?)

You know this thread is a year old? Confused DS is 2 now! I did buy some tights in the end though - he's worn them on really cold days this year. Although beside the point as he wears shoes now.

I have been buying sock ons as new baby presents for everyone as loads of my friends seem to have just had babies Grin

Of course they will pull off socks. We got some fantastic soft little suede boots from Clarks with a drawstring round the ankle you pulled on and once pulled were impossible to remove by the child. Problem solved. I would be Shock if I saw bare feet in this weather my god!
