Our pavements have been gritted which is fab but our council have not gritted anything but the main road and now our grit bin at the end of the road is empty

Phoned the council roads helpline and they said that pavements are land services and if I wants grit I can go and collect it from the depot. if i could get out of my road on a hill in 6inches snow I wouldnt need grit FFS

YANBU.

Although down here, neither the roads NOR the pavements got gritted.

nickytwotimes · 21/12/2009 19:53

Yanbu.

We are the other way round and it is equally infuriating, though less likely to cause serious accidents!

Mshalfcut · 21/12/2009 19:54

Your pavements are gritted ? blimey our pavements are never gritted

Elfytigga · 21/12/2009 20:00

YANBU but most councils only grit bus routes.

I don't think any roads around here have been gritted, or the pavements.

The only place that had been done was the school playground.

gizzy1973 · 21/12/2009 20:09

our council have gritted nothing not even the main roads or bus routes

Northernlebkuchen · 21/12/2009 20:13

Our roads were done and a few pavements in the city centre but it's now 5 days since the snow started and our road and all the other little residential roads are still death traps. The council grit the main routes and then sit back and do bugger all about the rest.

smokinaces · 21/12/2009 20:20

we've had no where gritted and it first snowed Friday, Its like an ice rink out there.

and we have no grit bins, or we'd do it ourselves. its an absolute nightmare.

we've tried complaining to our council before but get no where. YANBU, this country needs to be more proactive in the snow and ice, as opposed to saying "we dont get it very often, we're not used to it" - this is the 2nd major snowfall like this in 09 and still they cant grit

RorysRacingReindeer · 21/12/2009 20:22

i'd like the pavements to be done - i've had to walk on the roads holding my 3 yo and carrying my baby

ImSoNotTelling · 21/12/2009 20:23

It drives me mad when they don't grit the pavements and do the roads. (which is the way they always do it round here). Like an explicit admission of what is important - cars and money - and what is not - pedestrians and broken bones.

Grrrrrr

fledtoscotland · 21/12/2009 20:25

I agree that the pavements need to be done but they have been gritted every day over the weekend and the roads havent been done once.

Only the main road is gritted here, none of the pavements or the side roads - which is why our next door neighbour currently has a car embedded in her fence...

Elfytigga · 23/12/2009 02:36

It might help you to know I went through Winsford in Cheshire yesterday - where the salt mine is - and the trucks were queuing to get in so hopefully your roads etc. will get gritted soon!

I think pavements and roads should be gritted - if not by council then at least grit/salt provided so residents can do it. We live on a school road and every other year the road has been gritted (not pavement) but not this year (Feb or now). It's disgraceful. Am going to buy some grit when weather gets better in preparation for next time (out of stock in all diy shops near me).

PfftTheMagicDragon · 23/12/2009 06:17

Only school done round here. By the school of course.

tinalane · 23/12/2009 07:13

Round here the pavements are left in ice too, I really worry about DP going into work.

But every day I'm worrying about the small side roads, every day so far I have skidded somewhere in the car & its frightening & just not funny.

Why can't they have gritters the size of those small road clearing vehicles, they could get round the roads.

Praying I will get to work safely again today, if it goes on like this we can't visit anyone this Christmas.

Just not happy

2rebecca · 23/12/2009 08:05

No gritted pavements my area Scotland. Roads well looked after though, except the residential ones which can mean parking elsewhere if snow bad. Had another 6 or so inches overnight.

PorridgeBrain · 23/12/2009 13:31

We haven't even had our roads gritted and thanks to this we now have a smashed up car where DH skidded on ice, mounted the pavement and hit a road sign. Incidentally 3 days before, someone else did exactly the same to the road sign opposite. Phoned the police to report road sign deformation and suggested that roundabout is desperately in need of grit to be told that our council can't afford grit

Tow truck has just been to collect the car and got stuck on our icy road for 90 mins while DH and 4 neighbours tried in vain to help.

I wouldn't mind if my council tax bill wasn't so extortionate!

MollieO · 23/12/2009 13:36

No roads or pavements gritted here and we are on a hill.

MollieO · 23/12/2009 13:37

Borough council delivered grit bags to the village but we cannot get to the collection point to get it!

No pavement grit here (IL's) or at home either. We walked into town earlier today and I fell on the footpath on the way back - bloody treacherous! I thought walking on the grass to the side of the path would be a bit more grippy, but I was wrong
