not to give this man money

Fed-ex managed to send two seperate parcels meant for us to another address. One was an online order I'd placed and one was a present for DS from MIL.

I'd rung this morning to find out where my order was and after a few phone calls the company established it'd been misdelivered on the 16th December and they would arrange re-delivery.

Then about 2.30pm, when I'm feeding my 8mo, a man in a hi-vis comes to the door with 2 packages in a sack. He tells me they were delivered to him in error and I thank him and apologise for his inconvenience. He says he had to open them to see if there was anything important in them . Fair enough says I (while wondering why he couldn't call the courier from the number on the outside of the box), thanks again.

Then he says he's had to pay for phone calls "to sort this out". And asks me for £3. I think he's joking... then realise he isn't. I tell him that he should take it up with the courier company as it's their error and that as he's spoken to them I would think they'd already be sorting it out.

He gets agressive and starts shouting, demanding the money. I tell him no and to take it up with the courier company.

Since then I've rung the courier who agree he should be compensated but won't actually do it "because we don't know who he is and we've not had any phone calls regarding these parcels"... erm, yes you do because I've given you his address.

I've also tried to call the companies to see if he rang them direct and they can compensate him. One I'm waiting for a call back, the other has no record of a call either, but did tell me that Fed-ex had apparently spoken to the other party and were rearranging delivery!

When this has happened to us before we've called the courier or just redelivered it ourselves if the address is nearby. I'd never dream of asking the person who was receiving the parcel for money.

Btw, I do think Fed-ex should compensate him if he's been left out of pocket, even if he was horrid to me, hence my ringing round.

Oh, and I didn't have any cash on me either as it happened.

So, AIBU?

YANBU. And he opened the parcels in case it was something he'd want to keep.

Numberfour · 21/12/2009 16:20

i would have told him to take a long walk off a short pier.

YAdefNBU.

God he sounds a bit crazy. Imagine going round demanding £3 from someone.

Ok it was nice of him to deliver presents... although I think he opened them for other reasons than to check it was anything important

Its actually illegal to open someone else's post.

I would forget about it if I was you. Certainly wouldnt waste anymore time calling fed-ex/delivery company.

TisTheSeasonToBeHully · 21/12/2009 16:25

Loon.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 21/12/2009 16:25

I was a bit worried because he knows where I live... but then I know where he lives now.

I've spent 10 minutes ringing - but also so the lovely lady at Steenbergs could get her money back from Fed-ex.

Opening your mail without your express permission is illegal.

His attitude was appalling and I agree with the poster who suggested he only opened the package to check if there was something worth stealing.

YANBU

RubberDuck · 21/12/2009 17:50

Yep, it's illegal - I would report him to the non-emergency local police number tbh. Imagine how intimidated you would have felt if you were an elderly person living on your own (and I do wonder how often he has tried it on around the neighbourhood and how many people actually pay up).

motherbeyond · 21/12/2009 17:57

omg! total weirdo..i would've gone mental if someone came and said they'd opened my post...i'd report him to the police if i were you

msrisotto · 21/12/2009 18:07

What a poor excuse, he was clearly looking to see if it was something valuable! Nutter. YANBU.

ShinyAndNew · 21/12/2009 18:14
  • He did what? I'd ring the police too. I was convinced my old postie was half blind, I must have spent hours of my life redelivering mail he posted to me, with some one elses address on it. I never opened any iof it, or asked for any money.

Though one person did open one of my letters and took two weeks to bring it back. T'was a giro check for back dated tax credits. Methinks he tried to cash it, but couldn't so brought it back. DH answered the door. I'd have given him a piece of my mind.

TrippleBerryFairy · 21/12/2009 18:20

YANBU
he sounds like a drunk or addict desperate for a few pounds. And what's up with opening the packages???? I hope you slammed the door in his face.

PheasantPlucker · 21/12/2009 18:24

Agree it sounds like he opened the parcels to see if there was something he fancied

Total loon. YANBU

JustAnotherManicMummy · 21/12/2009 18:26

Thank you I feel much better now. Not sure when I became so wimpy. Time was I'd have seen him off the property by the scruff of the neck (I'm only 5'4 but had attitude).

I was really expecting someone to go - it's only £3 you tight cow! And it's nearly xmas and snowing! But you're all right. He is a loon.
