actually he still has. Not sure why I used past tense. Perhaps I am sensing a change....

Rollmops · 21/12/2009 18:12

Children are as polite as they are brought up to be.

mistletoekisses · 21/12/2009 18:21

YABU.

A 14 year old lad got up to give me his seat on the tube when I was pregnant. None of his fellow female commuters a similar age did. Nor did any of the adult male commuters...

That action still brings a smile to my face when I hear about the 'youth of today'. I just wish his parents had known what he had done.

hollyroger · 21/12/2009 18:25

sometimes at that age (or any other) children feel shy or socially inept. My young teen son, who has wonderful manners mostly, can sometimes be thrown into a paralysis of shyness. He says ''I just don't know what to say so i say nothing in case I say the wrong thing''
i concur with forlornhope.

What a load of bulls bollocks! It depends on how they are brought up.

Everyone comments on my ds's manners & he is only 3.All of the children in his nursery have lovely manners.

Tortington · 21/12/2009 18:27

i thnkk dogs are better than bats

GrumpyWhenWoken · 21/12/2009 18:33

my two boys are very polite, to other people, ds2 often says 'you're most welcome' he's only 4! Quite old fashioned really!

So no I don't think it's a gender thing, just how they've been brought up ( beautifully by ME! )

YABU and outrageously sexist. My DSs 18, 16 and 8 can all be very polite when they want to be.

SantaWears2SnowShoes · 21/12/2009 18:47

o0h ffs
sexist
bloody hell
it was a question ffs

dilemma that's lovely I had a similar experience, walking through the park at dusk with my double buggy - had mistakenly promised the boys I would let them have 10 minutes in the playground if they behaved themselves while shopping

got to the playground gate and there were about 30 bikes on the ground with hordes of teenage lads in hoodies laughing and hanging out

wondered whether I should feel intimidated - they weren't DOING anything terrible

two of them leapt to their feet when they saw me, held the gate open, smiling, one ruffled ds2's hair

the stereotypes are crap

I don't believe girls are more polite than boys, of course not

what bullcrap

GreensElves · 21/12/2009 18:52

no offence to the OP though

Today we were at te post office and DS1 turned round and made sure the elderly couple after me could go through unhinderd by doors, buggies opr the sheet ice that is everywhere.

I almosta sked if anyone had lost a child becuase it didn't seem he was mine LOL!

I think kids can vary, you see the worst of your own, but IME of having 4 boys and having run a rainbows group- nah, both are capable of manners and damned rudeness.

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 21/12/2009 19:09

Oh and I noticed when ds4 was born that it was always boys in their teens who got out my way (you think i'dbe handy with a buggy by now, still crash it daily ) and opended doors, often when cooing over the baby.

When I reoounted it on here I as told I was wrong PMSL.

memoo · 21/12/2009 19:19

Politeness has nothing to do with sex. If you bring your DC up to be polite then they will be.
