To think Next should not be starting their sale at 7am on Boxing Day?

The poor staff. Are more shops going to be open on 26th this year?

Its shocking isn't it. I know in our centre Next and River Island are open at 7 for their sale which means most shops there will follow

Next in our centre is normally about 5am for sale- my crazy friend LOVES the next sale lol

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 21/12/2009 12:48

YABU

You don't have to go and the staff know the working hours deal so don't have to work there.

nancy75 · 21/12/2009 12:49

because its a saturday it is not officially boxing day, so they wont even get double time. shop work is shit at xmas. i wish everyone would boycott shops until the 27th but it will never happen

darcymum · 21/12/2009 12:53

Well I am going to boycott Next until at least the 27th

NorbertDentressAngel · 21/12/2009 12:59

I really don't get Next, and why people queue at stupid times for their sales.

Their clothing is hardly anything special.

I feel sorry for staff who are expected to work on days like Boxing Day. In retail you often don't get the choice (unless its you either work Xmas Eve or Boxing Day if you want to keep your job)

Fibilou · 21/12/2009 13:00

Quite agree with you Norbett.

Cybilsnotgettingdressed · 21/12/2009 13:00

Never mind the staff what about the saddoes that will be queuing outside in the dark (probably hoping the local TV cameras will be there)

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 21/12/2009 13:01

I agree. I have been to a couple of Next sales at normal shopping hours a few days later and never seen anything that was previously on sale. People believe the hype.

lovechoc · 21/12/2009 13:08

agree with your norbert. I've never found what's so special about Next personally. I tend to stay clear and only once or twice have I browsed in the shop. There are much nicer shops IMHO.

I used to enjoy working Christmas Day and Boxing Day in my career (not retail!) so don't really understand why people feel sorry for retail workers. They don't have to work there if they don't want to.

DoingTheBestChristmasICan · 21/12/2009 13:09

Boots is open on the 26th too,its not a bank holiday as it falls on a Saturday, the bank holiday goes onto the Monday.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 21/12/2009 13:11

my friend works in a famous high st chemist and their sale is also starting at 7am Boxing day

she has to be at work by 6:30 am

it is shocking and so shit for family life

what right-minded people are even shopping at that time ?

I will be tucked up in bed on Boxing Day morning then having a leisurely breakfast

I probably won't even venture outta the house, never the fecking shops

oh, and I haven't shopped in Next for 10 years, it is shite, I wouldn't have it given to me

SerenityNowAKABleh · 21/12/2009 13:14

I agree. Next is shite. I wouldn't even get up at 3 in the afternoon to go there, let alone 7am.

NightShoe · 21/12/2009 13:15

What about the people who work over Christmas day?

Sherbert37 · 21/12/2009 13:18

Sadly the staff do not have any real choice. Hardly any other jobs around at the moment and someone has to do it. Quite a contrast with those we are hearing about who have started their long Christmas and New Year break today.

nancy75 · 21/12/2009 13:19

i hate the they dont have to work there attitude. i am a sahm but was a retail manager, i started working in retail when no shops opened on boxing day/new years, and they didnt do late night every day for a month, it was never part of my job, and it slowly became expected that you would be open and working all the time.
the last xmas i worked we closed at 5 on xmas eve and had a customer that refused to leave until she was ready (about 5.45) lots of people have the attitude that if you work in a shop you are pond life - tough shit if you don't get a xmas as long as i get my cheap knickers

Cybilsnotgettingdressed · 21/12/2009 13:21

I agree about retail work I did it for years and used to dread getting up early on sale day. The day does go really fast though

its a vicious circle though isn't it?. the shops open because they think the customers wnat it but the customers only go because they are open.

lovechoc · 21/12/2009 13:23

exactly nighshoe there are people who work Christmas Day and just get on with it. I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt etc. It's loads of fun! And well paid

FourArms · 21/12/2009 13:24

I don't see the problem really....

I quite enjoy the sales. It's a family affair for us - if there's something we want for Christmas that will be reduced in price days later, then we get given money. We're grown ups now, and get 'bits' to open so the DSs are happy! Usually my mum, my sisters and I go shopping, DH and my dad play with the boys and then my dad makes a lovely roast. Sounds fab to me!

There are upsides and downsides to every job.. teachers can't take holiday in term time, people working in theme parks can't take holiday in summer holidays, people deployed in the Forces don't get any choice about their leave (my DH!), people who work in shops don't get lots of leave over Christmas. That's life!

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 21/12/2009 13:26

I have worked many Christmases (inc Xmas Day) and New Years

However, I work in what you could term "essential services"

I don't call shopping "essential"

Heqet · 21/12/2009 13:30

I find that, generally, the best sales (don't know about Next, never shop there) are at the end of January. The big January Sale Starts Boxing Day hype draws in the crowds, but I think the real savings are later in the month. Or even February. When they are clearing all the stock they got in for their January sale.

WeakAtTheCheese · 21/12/2009 13:31

I work for a well known seller of knickers and chickens and lots of stores used to be open on Boxing day. However, about 4 years ago there was a change in policy and now no stores are open on the 26th or on New Year's Day. Much better, I think the time off over Christmas for people who work in retail is already rubbish, cutting it to one day is ridiculous.

lucykate · 21/12/2009 13:32

you'd have to be pretty sad to get yourself up and to a next branch for that time in the morning on boxing day. does a crappy clothing bargain really take priority over a family christmas these days?

we3kingbeat23oforientare · 21/12/2009 13:32

Unfortunately, most staff have to work on boxing day as it is part of a bank holiday - at least it is in my store anyhow.

We have been campaigning to our area manager that as all the other stores are closed around us that we should remain closed too.

They're not, but noone wants to work on boxing day in our area and we will do all we can to not work on those days.

It's not just that it's on a Saturday that shops are open...it's because it's over the christmas holidays...just like Easter falls over a Sunday and Monday.

At the moment, we are obliged to only be closed on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

I am all for boosting the economy by encouraging spending, but am also for quality time off too.

TBH, I think that Sunday opening hours for stores has been the death of family and rest time.

I might get shot for this, but....When I was younger, Sundays were boring as hell, but at least people got a chance to do nothing and were obliged to. There just wasn't anything to do. Now on a Sunday, people come into our store and window shop for something to do. The store gets messier than it normally would on any other day and everyone is knackered who works there.

Yes, I understand about people not being able to shop on any other day, and the freedom to work 50 hours a week if we want or the ability to only work on weekends....but.....a chance to spend some time not spending money and seeing family, friends, children, the inside of your own home without the expenditure might be nice?? no?? oh ok, i'll just put on my fireproof jacket and tin hat for shelter then shall I??

2kidzandi · 21/12/2009 13:33

I just do the next sale online. Won't be seen dead standing outside at 5am in the morning.

Olifin · 21/12/2009 13:34

I bloody hate Next. And I think anyone who goes clothes shopping at 7am on Boxing Day is a sad git. So there.
