To not be comfortable with the music played at my child's school today?

Have namechanged as I am a regular and the school would be identifyable etc, and although I'm not going to make a fuss, I would like some opinions.

Today my DS came home from school singing

this song

I was a bit and asked where he'd heard it, to which he replied that the teacher had it on in class today.

Now, I do realize that children are exposed to all manner of music on the radio etc, and am not looking to shelter him from it. I'm just not sure that it's appropriate for these types of songs to be played in the classroom.

He's in y2 btw.

I so want to play this to my dd so she can sing all the words to her dear daddy when she goes for the weekend but I woun't ....

SantasBigboots · 16/12/2009 22:27

Shouldn't have been played in the classroom. Teachers have a responsibility to check lyrics for content and IMHO this is not suitable for 6/7 year olds.

I teach dance in a secondary school and still check lyrics/content for suitability.

hypem.com/track/913255/Dizzee+Rascal+-+Freaky+Freaky+Produced+By+Cage+

on just ater I bought it (and hadn't listened to the lyrics) on the school run with my three kids inc my 7 year old son and his mate....wasn't listening to it really till saw my 10 yr old DD looking at me in shock....

Buddleja · 16/12/2009 22:33

christiana I thought that - I love her hair too!!!

Whilst most children mightn't listen to the lyrics the lyrics are still there to be heard to a child that actual might - if the teacher did play that version the YANBU

I think children are sexualised at far to young an age - not need for a teacher do it in school too

mum2all · 16/12/2009 22:34

Teacher probably had radio on in the background as is Christmas time so things are a bit more relaxed in school. You'll probably find (if you speak to the school) that neither the teacher nor 75% of the class even recall the radio being on. your dc may just have picked up on the catchy tune/lyrics. don't think it's suitable if she expressly played it for them but as a teacher I often have the radio on in the background while we are working but generally assume as it's daytime radio they won't broadcast anything too risque - will be more careful in future!

Am a teacher and think that it is totally inappropriate.

almay292 · 16/12/2009 22:47

How can anybody think objecting to Lily Allen's output (can't think of a better word) is unreasonable? Maybe the teacher thought the children would respond to a bunch of ditties that sound like they've been made-up and sung by a brattish 10 year old?

NeverMakeMeScream · 16/12/2009 22:47

obviously I have no intention of saying anything.

But just because the lyrics go over children's heads does that mean it's ok to still play them? Even if you take the bit about the wet patch out, the chorus still says "you've never made me scream." and "and then you make this noise and it's apparent it's all over," I can just imagine a curious six/seven yo saying "What's all over mummy?"

Research has shown that a lot of what children see in tv goes over their heads too, but we still don't let them view anything with any kind of violence in, and even minor sexual scenes are rated.

duffpancake · 17/12/2009 00:03

Reminds me of when I used to blithely sing along to Billie Jean by Michael Jackson when I was a youngster...

Totally off the beam for a minute but I was at an under 16 ice skating disco with a group of young people a few weeks ago ( Iknow, Iknow it's a long time since I was under 16!!) and the song over the PA was a rap style with a heavy bass line. The lyrics were 'Head down, Ass up ...that's the way I like to fuck' hmmmm. Makes Lilly look like she's singing a nursery rhyme!!

yummyyummyyummy · 17/12/2009 11:38

It is totally inappropriate and kids are so good at picking up lyrics.I would be mortifed if my DDs started singing about 'spending ages giving head'
