Not only did he not press our doorbell but he didn't even have the parcels.

Is it some cost cutting thing so they make us collect them from the depot?

I've caught mine out doing this too, about a year ago.

abra1d · 11/12/2009 21:37

Yup. There has been some media coverage about this. It saves them having to take the parcels in the van.

Our postie is fantastic and would never do this, however.

VirginMaryWearsPrimark · 11/12/2009 21:39

We are in N London - the depot isn't too far but it's a pain - just the bloody cheek of it.

They are open tomorrow morning and I'll call and rant at the poor sod that answers the phone.

What?! That is insane!

VirginMaryWearsPrimark · 11/12/2009 21:40

Ours don't have vans either - it's big wheel along trolleys.

That has happened to me more times than I care to remember. I have even had "sorry you were out cards" popped through my door whilst I was at home. It got so bad that I had to stop using Amazon as every single package was at the depot instead.

I can't decide if it is a cost cutting exercise or individual laziness.

I once sent DH to collect a parcel for me and they wouldn't hand it over to him as it had to be the exact name that was on the parcel. We have the same surname and address - is that not enough?

The Royal Mail is a joke IMO.

PCPlumIsMyHomeboy · 11/12/2009 21:40

What did he say about where the parcels were?

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 11/12/2009 21:41

I stayed in all day for a delivery - watched it online - it was put on the lorry in the local town at 7.52 and then apparently went for a drive for 10 hours before going back "into our system" so have to spend another day 7.30-5.30 waiting in

bran · 11/12/2009 21:42

We phoned our local sorting office and complained when our postie did this about 4 years ago and it hasn't happened since. It is very annoying.

VirginMaryWearsPrimark · 11/12/2009 21:43

TheCrackFox haha yes I was refused a parcel at the depot once because it was in DD's name not mine and I couldn't provide her proof of address. She was 5 days old at the time.

VirginMaryWearsPrimark · 11/12/2009 21:44

PCPlumIsMyHomeboy He looked flustered and said he'd tried to deliver the parcels earlier and had sent them back to the depot when we weren't in. Ha ha

That's bad Primark. I hope you complained.

Miggsie · 11/12/2009 21:44

Our postie is fab but there is a certain delivery company that does this every time. Once they didn't knock at my house but left the parcel at a nieghbours...I was in, I had to go and pick the parcel up as they were driving off down the road!

Perhaps I frightened him once and he decided he couldn't face me...

SuWoombOfImmaculateConception · 11/12/2009 21:45

My postman is amazing if I get a 'while you were out' card from the van, he will personally bring it back for me the next day (on foot) to save me going to collect it.

Thinking about it, what would be an appropriate gift/tip for a postman?

paisleyleaf · 11/12/2009 21:45

I might be able to understand it, if it's a postie on foot with lots parcels to try and manage. But not in a van.

Missus84 · 11/12/2009 21:45

You don't have to go to the depot, you can go on the website and have them redelivered - you can choose the day then too.

Our postman has done this before too, too lazy to carry parcels up to the second floor basically.

feedthegoat · 11/12/2009 21:48

Mine has just dumped parcels in the recycling bin and posted a note when I've been in the kitchen, mere yards away. He could probably even see me through the door!

JaneiteMightBite · 11/12/2009 21:50

I saw our postman do this at our neighbour's house this week: had the cards ready as he walked up the path and didn't even knock on the door. V odd.

Babieseverywhere · 11/12/2009 21:53

I caught my postman doing this once. I demanded he went back to his depo and get it. I had no transport and it would of took me a couple of hours to bus and walk to the collection point and why should I do that when I had already paid for postage and was in waiting for it !!!

He was very sheepish and did fetch it back an hour later.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 11/12/2009 21:54

When our normal postie is off, another younger bloke comes very early - about 6.30am. We have dogs and as soon as anyone knocks on the door or puts something thru the letterbox they start barking.

I hear the letterbox go, no knock, dogs bark, I run down, dressing gown half on, he is nowhere to be seen. Has shoved a card thru without even knocking then legged it!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 11/12/2009 21:55

Meant to say, same postie once came later on a saturday, clocked me thru the kitchen window then still shoved me a 'sorry you were out card' thru the door and legged it!!

Wheelybug · 11/12/2009 21:58

that's terrible.

I don't think this is happening round here but, I wouldn't know. I have done loads of shopping on line but a few days ago I got a card to say my parcel couldn't be delivered, so the next morning I go to the PO to collect it... whilst I'm there another parcel is delivered so I have to go back the next day and collect that and then the same happened again.

Although I have to say, luckily today I took the car, parked in a nearby carpark and they looked at me (with buggy) and said 'do you have a car, you have 7 large parcels' then they let me park in their car park and 2 of them carried out my parcels and packed them in my car. It warmed my heart .

Rollmops · 11/12/2009 22:03

Was home and while sorting DTs wellies, saw the note, that turned out to be 'sorry you were away', being popped through the letterbox. No bell ringing nor knocking.
Telephoned the post office and expressed my dissapointment at their lax service [harrrr].
Couple of hours later when out with DTs, had the postman running after me with the parcel....
He had feared that the 'babies were sleeping' and as the parcel had to be signed for, didn't want to ring the bell....

PurpleLostPrincess · 11/12/2009 22:04

This has made my blood boil recently too - I'm recovering from a hysterectomy so can't drive at the mo, DH doesn't drive. We're in the house almost 24/7 but kept getting cards through saying they couldn't deliver the packages. I even put a big sign on the door saying 'Please knock LOUDLY' as most of the time I've been upstairs but still kept getting the cards. Rang the number on the card and put in a complaint, explaining it all and rearranged delivery. Now the postman/woman seems to knock each time...

Rollmops · 11/12/2009 22:06

Aarrghh, my spelling is horrid, I blame the tasty Sauvignon.
