Went to the GP today, wanted to go onto the pill but am still BF my 9/5mo DD2... have no desire to give up before 12mths and even then i may continue a little longer.

Anyway when i said what i'd gone for and that i was BF so would need one i could still take while doing so, his reply was 'at 9mo she should be waened by now'... I said she was weaned onto solids but still took a few BF from me. He then said that as i had to wait till my next AF to take the first cycle i should stoip BF before then!! I said i wasn't willing to do that and he begrudgingly gave me a prescription for the one i could take...

AIBU to think it was really none of his bussiness as long as my DD2 is healthy- (which she is!!)....

I only breastfed for a couple of months so dont know much about it BUT I thought a 9 month old was WELL within the recommended age to breastfeed.

cantmummyhaveabreak · 10/12/2009 17:03

Also DD2 was born 2mths prem so is really only like a 7mo!!

Contact practice manager, that's well out of order.

cece · 10/12/2009 17:06

How strange my GP gave me the pill at 6 week check up and I was bf then. No issue with it at all.

Although today the HV was implying, because I don't give my baby formula, that I need to give extra vitamins to him - as though BF was worse than formula!? I was a bit

Cece, formula does have extra vitamins added to it already, so breast fed babies older than 6 months who are not eating much may need vitamins. It doesn't make it worse than formula, after all it has good stuff that can't be added to formula.

cantmummyhaveabreak · 10/12/2009 17:08

not much point complaining- he retires at the end of the month. I'm just very upset by his comments- and DH is working so can't moan and sulk to him!!

Sorry, got sidetracked, I also agree that the GP advice was v. dodgy.

COMPLAIN! Because the entire practice has to know this isn't acceptable and a complaint like this will be discussed at a practice meeting so all the doctors will know!

CMHAB - I'd complain as well, maybe printing out the info from the NHS and the WHO suggesting BF for well beyond 6 months is a good idea... It sounds like that GP is in need of more training.

cece - formula is stuffed full of vitamins, especially follow on milks (one of their marketing policies...). How well absorbed they are c/w the vitamins in BM is another question entirely and not one I know the answer to!

cantmummyhaveabreak · 10/12/2009 17:18

As DD was prem she has to have a vitamin suppliment until 12mo anyhow, so the vitamins shouldn't have been the problem.

I think I may complain, or at least get DH to for me...

OP posts:
cece · 10/12/2009 17:19

Oh I didn't know that about formula

I bf my older two dc and was never told to offer them extra vitamins so was a bit shocked when she suggested it! You would have thought I would have heard about it before...

Tangle · 10/12/2009 17:19

Even if he retires, he's still free to spout his opinions and given his previous position they will be taken by many as being medically correct. And it will make you feel better

cocobongo · 10/12/2009 17:20

Another advocate for complaining- he may be retiring, but it is possible that he could continue doing locum shifts in future.

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 10/12/2009 17:20

Oh my GP says that sort of crap to me often (DS4 is older 19months but cant have milk fropm cows or goats and wont tak4e any other so its IMO unavoidable as wellas enjoyable)

He refused to treat my foot when I was unable to walk, all sorts

Thats coz he's a knob

YANBU, ignore him

awastingamanger · 10/12/2009 17:23

Peachy, refused to treat your foot?

cantmummyhaveabreak · 10/12/2009 17:28

Peachy- thats disgusting behaviour by your GP!!

kinnies · 10/12/2009 17:36

HaveaBreak Your Gp is of corse a twunt. You keep going and well done

peachy Did you wash said foot before showing gp?........

diddl · 10/12/2009 17:45

I went onto the mini pill at my 6 week check up.
I thought contraception was always discussed then!

Would definitely complain-no way he should be trying to dissuade someone from b/feeding a 9month old!

Morloth · 10/12/2009 17:47

Madness. Never heard anything about supplementing a perfectly healthy breastfed baby with vitamins either. DS didn't really eat anything other than BM until about 8 months and is/was quite strapping and well.

Change GPs he sounds very confused.

cantmummyhaveabreak · 10/12/2009 17:52

Diddl- I did have my 6wk check with the same GP and we never discussed it (as he didn't bring it up), however when DD1 was 8wks old i started on the mini pill and was BF but it gave me mild depression. I didn't want to start on the pill this time round until DD2 was much older and i had myself in a good enough routine that any side effects could be pin-pointed to something other than PND as it was when i had DD2.

OP posts:
cantmummyhaveabreak · 10/12/2009 17:53

*should have been 'when i had DD1' at the end of that last msg

Please please please report him. Someone less well informed than you might believe him and trust his opinion .
