My letter to Sainsbury's about this morning's cafe trip...

Dear Sainsbury's Customer Service,

Looking back on it, it was NOT a good idea to take my 3 year old daughter and myself to the cafe at the Aberdeen berryden store this morning. We've been there before, and frankly we should know how bad it is.

At 9:20am there wasn't a clean table in the place. The cafe was staffed by the world's most bored looking young man, and a lady whose main responsibility was wandering around holding large pans of water. The previous customers HAD tried, and had in the main put all their dirty dishes back on their trays, but every table was either dirty, or had a tray on it waiting to be picked up. Frankly given one of those wheely tray holders, my daughter and I could have cleared the place in about 2 minutes.

There was a 15 minute queue in an empty cafe (15 minutes equating to 3 people being served) whilst our young man wandered aimlessly staring around him, trying to serve at the counter but not really managing. (Apologies, I can't give you any names as none of the staff were wearing name badges).

Finally we were able to order. I requested a decaff, skinny vanilla latte. Amazingly I saw bored-young-man squirting the vanilla syrup in it but as if by magic there was absolutely no evidence in the finished article - I suspect more than half a squirt is needed (and at 30p for the syrup I think I'm entitled to more than half a squirt). I can also tell that when I was given was not decaff - I'm very heavily pregnant and avoiding strong caffeine so decaff was important to me - I can tell by the affect on myself and my baby that I was not given decaff coffee. I would have brought up the issue with the vanilla syrup but the 20 minute wait to get to the front of the queue was more than I could have coped with - also by that time bored-boy had wandered off...

We treated ourselves to cakes - the most insipid pale, stale pancakes for my daughter and a danish for me. (I turned down the pineapple tart that was on display as it appeared to be accompanied by a HUGE fly that was resident on it the entire time I was there - it takes a lot of talent to still have flies somewhere as cold as Aberdeen in December so I suspect somewhere there is a happily breeding community). I had to practically beg for some frozen butter for my daughter's pancakes which then wouldn't spread and the pancakes were stale enough to crumble under the pressure of attempted spreading.

All in all it was NOT a treat - it was punishment that I appeared to be charged £6+ for. Again, there is absolutely no point in complaining as the manager is impossible to locate and the other staff are bored, ineffectual and aimless. Unfortunately this is an ongoing problem at Berryden and every time I think of giving the cafe another try, my disappointment is just further reinforced..

.........

Bit too strong..?? (yep, before anyone says it, I've got nothing else in my life to worry about this morning...)

Write to Justin Rose, head honcho, I did about a complaint and I got a very nice letter back and a £10 gift token!

The cafes I think are generally crap, the one at Ellesmere Port/Cheshire Oakes it hideous, poor service, horrid plastic food, manky tables.

It was so much nicer to go to a Sainsbury's when they had Starbucks in them. Bad move to phase them out and replace with Cafe-O-Crap.

After all how hard is it to make a decent sarnie and coffee and bloddy smile and hurry up?

ginnybag · 10/12/2009 12:23

Please send the letter... and then come and tell us what you get as a reply.

Also loving the 'I am trying to be a customer' line!

LoveBeingAMummyKissingSanta · 10/12/2009 12:24

I ahve to agree all supermarket cafe's seem to be the dumping ground for the crap staff. I'd love to go and work there and slap develop them

MummyTumble · 10/12/2009 12:24

Fab letter - you must send it....and let us know the response!

EdwardCullenShallBeMine · 10/12/2009 12:24

Fantastic letter, love it.

Bathsheba · 10/12/2009 12:30

Hi Again

Well I've emailed it off to Customer Services - if I don't get a decent response from them in a tiemly manner then I'll print it off and send it to Justin Rose....

A lovely christmas hamper might just about erase the memory of this morning for me....esp if they delivered it...

Oh I was in Aberdeen last weekend, though not at Sainbo's, and really liked it.

Obv I'm not a ponce as we played Crazy Golf and then ate at Jimmy Chung's. We did go to the Art Gallery though, mainly so I could say 'but I just don't get why it's art, to everything.

I was quite fascinated by the city being so close to the beach.

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/12/2009 12:32

Waitrose cafes are very nice (well they would be, wouldn't they?) but fiendishly expensive for what they are - you still have the queue up and put your food on a tray after all.

Word of advice for everybody - never ever venture in to an Asda cafe.

OtterInaSkoda · 10/12/2009 12:34

It has a beach? Would Aberdeen make a good holiday destination? (Clearly not expecting to go for a swim or anything!). It sounds lovely and I've never been to Scotland before.

lemonadesparkle · 10/12/2009 12:36

oops just moments too late to point out your mistake before emailing

My dh complained about the state of the John Lewis restaurant the other week - food was fine but they seemed to have borrowed the non clearing staff from your store. The manager was very apologetic and the next time we returned the family had a fantastic breakfast (that saw us all through til supper time ) on the house

Hope you get a satisfactory response

SexySantasWearPrimark · 10/12/2009 12:37

effect not affect.

But otherwise a hilarious letter. Send it and let us know the response!

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 10/12/2009 12:42

If they do deliver a hamper, it will hurled through your front window by bored boy, complete with a bottle of vanilla syrup

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 10/12/2009 12:47

IT is obviously not the time for eating out in Aberdeen.
We went with MIL last weekend to the carvery place in Bridge of Don (her request I really dislike that place) and they had no food...at 7pm....on a Saturday.
MIL spoke to the power hungry teenager manager and he was worse than useless so she complained about him I personally would not be going back 2nd time i've been there and they have no food but they gave her a voucher for 2 (despite there being 6 adults that couldn't eat that night) and she thinks it's great again.

I am not keen on the staff full stop at the Sainsbos in Garthdee have had no luck with them...thankfully never been to the cafe.

muggglewump I love jimmy Chungs i'm sooo sad but it's true.

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 10/12/2009 12:47

Send it, but make sure you include your nectar card number and ask them for £10 worth of points to be credited to your account. I did this when a chicken I'd bought turned rotten before the use by date - it was about £3.60 and they put £5 worth of points on my card to make up for it.

Fibilou · 10/12/2009 12:49

Well worded and absolutely hilarious in its use of sarcasm.
Love it

Bathsheba · 10/12/2009 12:50

I honestly don't think bored boy has it in him...!! Actually he was really alert - he was just very alert to every conversation going on around him - he made it obvious he was listening to every conversation that was going on in the queue - its just that it stopped him from doing anything else...

otter - Aberdeen is a fantastic holiday destination - its a decent sized city (with a beach in the city centre...like Barcelona really) and its surrounded by amazing countryside, lots of castles and little fishing villages....the language and the accent in outlying towns can be quite inpenetrable though..!!

Mugglewump - we had a fantastic Charlie and Lola/Lauren Child exhibition in the Art Gallery over the summer that my kids loved - they even Lola-fied the cafe...!

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 10/12/2009 12:51

OtterInaSkoda Aberdeen is indeed a good holiday destination.
Loads to do for everyone, plenty of things down at the beach, plenty to do in town some lovely parks.
Also a hop and a skip from the highlands and some gorgeous places to see.

You should drop by sometime

AND in the summer we were even hitting 30 degrees outside couldn't believe it...but that is rare and when it's cold it's bitter but like Bathsheba said lovely clear crisp day here today sun is outand the Granite is all sparkly.

Bathsheba · 10/12/2009 12:51

Ineedacleaner - the mains of Scotstown in Bridge of Don is FANTASTIC - its just up the hill from appalling carvery...please promise me you'll never go back to the appalling carvery..!

OP posts:
IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 10/12/2009 12:54

I solemnly promise you

I am NEVER going back there MIL loves it and it was her birthday so we went kicking and screaming smiling nicely.
It really was awful and the manager was worse than useless.
He seemed to think it was perfectly ok for a restaurant to have run out of food at 7pm on a Saturday night

Lexilicious · 10/12/2009 12:57

very cool letter. We're about to write something similar about the baby change facility in the mens loos in Selfridges. Top marks for having a dads changing area but it's the worst design you could imagine. DP was going to write his displeasure on the walls in baby poo but luckily didn't or we'd have lost the moral high ground somewhat.

FleeBee · 10/12/2009 12:58

I don't know if it's a Sainsbury's thing but I complained a few months ago, in writing and have heard NOTHING!!!! I have 2 DC under 2 and could only find one double trolley to put them in and it was filthy. Asked a trolley boy if he could find me another one and he said no!!

Ended up putting DD2 in her carseat in the trolley bit and DD1 in the normal seat and then bought the bare minimum as didn't want to squash DD2 and didn't want to give them my dosh. Complained at customer services, they asked me to put it in writing which I did. Must have been invisible ink or something.

StayingSantasGirl · 10/12/2009 12:58

That's a great letter, and I look forward to hearing what Sainsburys have to say in reply!

OtterInaSkoda · 10/12/2009 13:00

Off to check out flights and hotels... (will avoid Sainsbury's though)

MuffinToptheMule · 10/12/2009 13:10

I applied for a job at Sainsburys in Berryden last week. I had to wait in the cafe before my interview. The service looked rubbish and the food even worse.
Your letter is great, sums the cafe up perfectly.

Also, I didn't get the job.

Laquitar · 10/12/2009 13:17

I 'm sorry i will go against. I wouldn't sent it.

I did enjoy reading it and i was in stitches with the paragraph about the flies. It could be good for the newspapers. For the manager i am not sure. The hummour could be taken for sarcasm and the 'world's most bored young man' for insult.

These letters have to be short, to the point, and very factual. With a specific request for refound at the end (like a poster said, include your Nectar number and state the ammount you are asking for).
