In thinking that £30-£40 a week on gas in a 2.5 bed end terraced house is not right

I mean, it can't be surely?? We have a gas meter - we pay £12 a week to pay off a debt. but the £30-£40 a week is on top of that, so we are actually having to pay aout £50!!! We are struggling financially and this is crippling us.

I am sat here frozen and wont have the heating on all day, most days we have it on only for a couple of hours a night to heat up DDs room - her room is particularly cold. We have a multi fuel stove which we use for heat. There are only the three of us here, so no vast quantities of hot water used, we cook with gas but thats about it.

Surely that is too much to be paying? We have recently had a new efficient boiler fitted too, so cant even blame a dodgy central heating system. The house is draughty but £40 a WEEK on gas????

Or am i just being niave?

[email protected] Congratulations!! blimey, i turn my back for five minutes and people are getting pregnant left right and centre!

Thanks tara - I am sorted with the debt, we have the national debt line on our side and they are brilliant. Might try the CAB if there is no progress with BG though, why should we let them trample all over us just because we are in debt!

Am toasty warm now with our log burner on - its hot hot hot and up yer bum BG, you dont get a penny!!

shineon, i agree totally, it is the people who might be struggling who are charged the most it would seem!! We are looking into getting a load of logs delivered which we should be able to heat the house with for about £200 over the winter.

i'm going to write down when i have the heating on this week, how many rads on etc and see what we spend, if i feel it is inappropriate then im going to kick up a fuss - and believe me, ive become very good at fuss kicking this past few years, ive had to!

A WEEK?! Sorry to yell but I am in a 2 bed house as pay £45 a MONTH.

SolidGoldpiginablanket · 10/12/2009 17:48

I'm on a poxy key meter and paying off a debt but even I am not paying more than £25 a week - though this does mean turning off the heating practically all day and putting on extra clothes etc. I wonder if it's the flow button on your boiler that needs attention? Mine is dodgy and am hoping to get enough Xmas bonus to have a little man come round and whack it with a spanner or soemthing.

cece · 10/12/2009 17:51

omg i pay £65 per month for gas and elec and i have a 5 bedroom house!

motheroftwoboys · 10/12/2009 18:23

We seem to spend an arm and a leg. £220 a month for duel fuel. WE have an old 4 bed 3 storey terrace and TRY and be economical! Whatever we do it the bill/monthly payment seems to go up.

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 10/12/2009 18:33

no, i think the boiler is OK, its only about three months old!!!

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 10/12/2009 18:38

Its disgusting, i (like many others - im not feeling sorry for myself just stating a fact) have children, my DP works all the hours God sends and yet we still can't afford to keep her fecking bedroom warm all night - whilst some fat fucker who probably doesn't work as hard as my DP creams off a shed load of money in bonuses!!!

caykon · 10/12/2009 18:38

It surely can't be right. We pay £85 month for gas and elec in a 4 bed house, and I can't stand the cold so I keep our house very toasty

MetalMummy · 10/12/2009 22:35

We have prepayment meters and pay £15 a week gas and £10 a week electric, that's in a 3 bed semi. In summer the gas goes down to about £10 a month.

Oblomov · 10/12/2009 22:42

£60 a month . 3 bedrooms.

sanfairyann · 10/12/2009 22:50

it does sound possible - when we were on prepayment it cost tons more than direct debit

how about looking at ways to save money on heating - can you get grants forinsulation? electric heater for just dd's room? or use electric blanket for her to keep her warm - we do that rather than put heating on. I found a woolly hat in ds' bed last week - he dresses for bed

santaicanexplain · 10/12/2009 23:00

im on a meter and gas in the summer is barely £2 a week and winter £13-£15 a week, we are rarely cold.

santaicanexplain · 10/12/2009 23:01

oh and i have a 3 bed terraced house

secretgardin · 10/12/2009 23:05

my gas and electricity is about 110 a month after i set up a direct debit. on prepayment it was way too much and they rip you off big time.

shonaspurtle · 10/12/2009 23:09

Meters are daylight robbery. We had an electric one for a while and went through credit like a hot knife through butter.

I've just bought one of those OWL meters so I can see what our consumption is and BG were definitely ripping us off that year .

shonaspurtle · 10/12/2009 23:12

Get them out to check your meter. Might be nothing wrong with it but get them out anyway. Ask for a breakdown of what you've paid towards the debt/still got to pay.

Ask for someone to come and assess why it's costing you so much - I'm sure BG man said you could do this (might be making that bit up).

MyCatHasARedderNoseThanRudolph · 10/12/2009 23:18

I am astounded at the cost of some of these gas bills. I live in a 4 bed detached house with gch and a gas cooker. We pay, by DD, £60 pm and this is based on a meter reading.

We pay about £50 pm on electric.

I just cannot understand how the gas companies can justify these massive differences in price!

lilacclaire · 10/12/2009 23:24

I was with BG and was paying a fortune a month, switched to Eon and am paying £150 for gas and elec and am also £450 in credit!!

I am still paying off a big final bill from BG on a weekly basis.

When I had prepay meters, I struck a deal with another company that I would switch over to them if they took out the prepay meters for free. I would see if you could do this and then come to an arrangement with your current supplier to pay off the debt weekly (I pay £15p/w). I wouldn't tell them in advance though.

lilacclaire · 10/12/2009 23:25

Oh and i've got a pretty roomy 3 bed semi.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 10/12/2009 23:25

according to the BG MD the pay as you go meters are the same tariff, the extra you pay is the 70p to load the key.

i spoke to my pal about this (high up acc't power co) she says that the tariffs are the same now for the most part, because companies realised that they were onto a good thing with the new meters as they're more accurate and pay as you go is better for the balance books than the rest of us effectivley going into three months arrears.

fledtoscotland · 10/12/2009 23:28

could be right. depends how you pay (prepaid meter or DD), the type of central heating, how old & efficient the boiler is, double glazing, roof insulation etc etc. We are in a similar house and now pay £78pcm for both electric & gas having upgraded to a A+ efficiency combi boiler. we are also in credit as we pay this all year rather than change in summer and pay less.
