To be stunned at the wastefulness I witnessed today in the Tesco coffee shop

Ok, so im not particularly right on or lentil weaving, probably dont recycle as much as i should - not fussed if its organic or not. But today, tesco left me .

DP and i went shopping, thought we would grap a jacket potato from the coffee shop - so we -had JP with tuna and sweetcorn - we were duly presented with our potatoes, complete with two plastic containers with tuna and sweetcorn in it. Obviously done for portion control - it wasn't even recyclable plastic. It looked chavtastic too - now i know that tesco coffee shop isnt fine dining but come on guys!! I thought the thing of the moment was cutting down on packaging not increasing it.

YANBU, I remember being absolutely horrified to see this in M & S a few years ago - haven´t been back since.

It´s wasteful and completely depressing and unappetising food isn´t it. There´s no excuse for it.

ssd · 08/12/2009 17:54

so did you have a mince pie at the end?

famishedass · 08/12/2009 18:17

YANBU - i absolutely hate it when supermarket coffee shops do this. Take your custom elsewhere, preferably a nice local cafe.

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 08/12/2009 19:23

we usually dont even darken the door at tesco coffee shop but we were up against time and starving - this the only way you'll find me in there. M&S not much better tbh

YANBU, but the NHS do it too...

thisisyesterday · 08/12/2009 21:40

oooh our m&s don't do that, they're really good...

stealthsquiggle · 08/12/2009 21:42

Our canteen "restaurant" at work does the same.

gemmiegoatlegs · 08/12/2009 21:44

my dcs were at a wacky Warehouse party recently, you know the kind where they bring the food in little Happy Meal type boxes.
Well, at this party, they brought all the food out of the kitchen in the boxes, tipped each box out onto a paper napkin and chucked the boxes straight in the BIN! They didn't even let the kids eat of the flippin boxes.

I am going to complain to the Head Office. They keep on doing things like this cause they think people don't care.

It was my misfortune to work in a Tesco coffee shop during my mis-spent youth. When I first started we used to make the fruit salad, mix up tuna and sweetcorn ourselves and even scramble the odd egg. Unfortunately as health and safety increased everything was bought in pre-packaged, even cartons of pre-scrambled egg [bleurgh] and frozen omlettes.

Sad, bad for the environment and didn't improve the flavour.

YANBU

well I was a bit yesterday when i was out shopping at a big centre and grabbed a coffee and a muffin in the food court - big writing all over the muffin bag and coffee cup "100% recyclable" - only I would have had to bring it home as they only provide normal litter bins there. great!

MarioandLuigi · 08/12/2009 21:48

They do it because some people like butter and some people dont, so they put it in a container so you can add your own butter and then topping.

I know its a bit of a waste but some places you go the butter is on the side of the plate but the topping is already on the potato.

LynetteScavo · 08/12/2009 21:49

I'm all for tax on packing.

If I buy 2 pecan danish in Sainsburys it's cheapr to get them form the shelves in a plasitc box than from ther bakery counter in a paper bag. Stupid.

thisisyesterday · 08/12/2009 21:51

they could always just ask you if you'd like butter, and put the topping on the side of the plate rather than in a separe container.

or use a re-usable container!

notcitrus · 08/12/2009 21:53

Almost all plastic can be recycled with appropriate facilities (numbers 1-6 in the wee triangle). Given the cash incentives supermarkets have to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill, I'd expect them to send plastic to recycling along with their cardboard.

You can't tell just from it being shoved in a bin with other stuff as the easiest method is often to ship mixed waste (or mixed recyclables more often) to a separation facility rather than train every bod who works in the supermarket to understand all the different types of plastic.

They're still ramping up recycling facilities to meet the amount of material so it might not be recycled yet - you;d have to ask the manager of the supermarket. Also if it's reducing food waste or the weight of tins being transported to the cafe and then having to be recycled themselves it may be a better option having the individual premixed packs.

Complicated innit!

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 09/12/2009 08:25

mario - i disagree entirely, its just a way to dish our ridiculously small portions and save time. Like someone said, just put the topping on one side - its not rocket science.

notcitrus, im not entirely sure but i looked for the little triangle and it wasn't there. Also, if what i am lead to believe by the media is true, the recycling plants will discard any materials that have food matter on them - which means that even if they do recycle these containers then they will have to be cleaned before they go - more waste. Surely its just easier not to have them in the first place.

i agree that a lot of plastic is recyclable. but it's far better NOT to use it in the first place.

plus, lots of places won't recycle it, even though it can be recycled.

our local council will only recycle plastic bottles. weird huh?
they clearly don't trust us to read labels and see what type of plastic things are. so even if you have something that is made of a recyclable plastic, the same as many bottles, they will not take it.
