AIBU to think if you have spent the best part of eighty pounds on a coat that the buttons should not start to fall off within a week!

Argh!!! (getting sewing kit out and off to shops to find emerald green thread)

My mothers was a seamstress and says you should always sew the buttons on tighter yourself as they use a machine to put them on.

worldgonemad72 · 07/12/2009 10:44

Cant you take it back and get another one?

littlemoominmamma · 07/12/2009 11:00

Not sure if they would take it back for a button falling off, but they are all loose!

I really love the coat and bought it at Debenhams on the 20% off day, it was the only size 12 left so i would not get another the same. This happened to me last year with a coat from Next (beautifully made coat ruined by badly sewn on buttons) - Argh!!!

Might be conicidence but ALL the buttons have come off a coat I bought from Debenhams - think its a Jasper Conran one? - double row of buttons which made it a real pain in the bum. My MIL agrees with borderlass's mum - its because they are machine sewed on (or not as the case may be)

worldgonemad72 · 07/12/2009 11:05

A friend had a similar problem with a coat bought from M & S, they did replace it. But if you cant get a replacement still go in and ask speak to the manager of that department and see if you can maybe get a gift voucher or something. I bought a duvet set from there and when i opened it on one of the pillowcases the side seam had split a bit, i took it in and they didn't have another so i kept it and sewed it myself and they gave me a gift card for £10.

littlemoominmamma · 07/12/2009 11:06

lal123 My coat is a Jasper Conran one TOO!!!!! Double row of buttons, Emerald green colour. Thought I was paying a bit extra for quality!!!

Just happened to me as well - lovely purple job from M&S Per Una range. Although am ashamed to say that I sewed them all back on again and the next day they all fell off again - clearly my sewing skills are rubbish!

Open Letter to Jasper Conran,

Dear Jasper,

I am a big fan of your garments, I think they have great design at an affordableish price.

However I believe you are being let down at the finishing stages of your clothes being made. If you don't get the little things right (i.e buttons) it will put people off buying your clothes.

Hopefully this letter will be passed on to you by a mumsnetter if you are not yourself signed up.

Yours Sincerely,

Littlemoominmamma x

this happened to me - after the third time of the buttons falling off, house of fraser said i could have another jacket or my money back so i took the cash!!! It was very annoying as it was a lovely jacket, but just knew that for some reason those buttons were not going to stay on and it would take away from the jacket if i lost them,

i first had a seamstress do the buttons for me, but when it happened again and i lost two buttons, i took it back to house of fraser and they did it for me.

they couldnt have been more helpful about it!

lal123 · 07/12/2009 11:24

I've got the bluey green one - minus 2 buttons which I never put straight back on - think I know where they are!!? If its same coat its got a big button at the front and a little one to the back??

LastTrainToNowhere · 07/12/2009 11:28

This used to happen to me all the time. I'll confess that I now pre-empt the problem by stitching on the buttons of a new coat myself before wearing it. Go the habit from my mum (like borderlass' mum)

littlemoominmamma · 07/12/2009 11:29

lal123 - Oh yes, thats the one!!!!

My spare buttons are hopefully in a little bag on my dresser - if i cant find them i will take it back (very sadly as it really suits me, even though i say it myself)

I've got a Jasper Conran one from Debenhams that did exactly the same. It must be a problem at the factory. I didn't bother to take mine back as I liked it and I thought an exchanged one would do the same thing, so I just got the sewing kit out. YANBU though.

Piffle · 07/12/2009 12:17

I have a £15 coat from New look which has lasted 3 years of pretty constant use and one button fell of last week.
It is also emerald green (as an aside)
I think expensive these days, guarantees you nothing

POORSADMOTHER · 07/12/2009 12:35

I have a lovely coat from Selfridges, I forget the make/designer but I DO remember buying it some 7 or 8 years ago when buttons were very much in fashion. Well, 2 days ago a button fell off, can you imagine how surprised I was when I returned the coat and they offered me a zip to replace the button! No vouchers, just a bloody zip.

Longtinsellyjosie · 07/12/2009 13:31

This happened to me with a coat I bought from Debenhams! It had loads of them (well, quite enough, anyway) and I ended up sewing them all back on, one after another. It wasn't Jasper Conran though, it was that other label, Red(?) Herring. Something herring, anyway.

cantmummyhaveabreak · 07/12/2009 13:48

This happened to me with my brand new hooch coat. Have sewn them all on myself now as they were all coming loose. Dont want to loose one as i only have one spare!!

Think i'm going to start sewing them all myself when i buy them from now on!!

POORSADMOTHER · 10/12/2009 14:09

I have just been informed by a reliable chum in the fashion business, that if you buy cheap clothes then you "must" expect the buttons to fall off!. This is because they are sewn on by a cheap machine in China where no one gives a fuck. Apparently more expensive clothes have the buttons sewn on by "hand" by a real person ( usually Italy or UK )

littlemoominmamma · 10/12/2009 16:34

I'm afraid eighty quid is an expensive coat for me.... will do the lottery this weekend, wish shops would realise that the little things matter - sounding like my mum now!

This happened to me last year with a Red Herring one from Debemhams.

I thought same as you that for £70 I do not expect the buttons to fall off.

I tried to take it back but they said no - the assistant smugly informed me that when she buys a new coat she sews all the buttons on tighter.

I wouldn't even know where there is a needle and thread in my house

neenz · 10/12/2009 16:39

btw got a lovely Primark coat this winter for £30 and no buttons have fallen off

DecorHate · 10/12/2009 16:44

Well dd has an expensive school uniform - not a private school but has to be bought from a school uniform shop. Most of the stuff is made in the UK and the button still came off her skirt shortly after she got it - so much for better quality from the UK manufacturers!

totalmadness · 10/12/2009 19:44

Am no longer annoyed that my £19primark mac lost its button on the first day! agree that expensive no longer means better better quality.
