to think "Jeggings" are the most unattractive garment of clothing known to man??

My daughter has asked for a pair for Christmas. Having just returned from the school run and seen several teenage girls wearing them I am appalled that they think this is a good look.

Two girls had them yanked up exposing practically every orafice within their crotch, another with the crotch area around her knees and one rather plump girl looked like what can only be described as the Michelin Man.

Also the fashion for leggings which are made of tights material but because they are sold as leggings there seems no need to cover up anything and you can clearly see the occupants underwear...I am no prude but has this not gone a bit far??? AIBU to think this is all a bit indecent?!

i think the horrid expression 'footless tights' was better and it did not give the wear permission to camel foot it all over town showing off her pubic bone.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 07/12/2009 10:51

I think they can look okay if worn with a long top that covers all bits and ends mid thigh.

I hate seeing people with leggings/jeggings/treggings as if they were jeans with a short top. Even the fittest and slimmest of people can't get away with that. And you can't help but look. Its most distracting.

LizzyLordsALeaping · 07/12/2009 10:55

I have mine on today (age 36, good legs but size 14-16, am tall though).
They are a god send, very comfy, fit in your boots easily and everyone thinks that they are skinny jeans anyway. Have long top, boyfriend cardigan and Fly boots on, they just look like skinny jeans.
Would not show my ass in them, no sirree bob.

SerenityNowAKABleh · 07/12/2009 11:04

I think the issue here is a universal one - many, many teenagers just don't know how to dress properly. If I think of some of my outfits as a teenager ... shudder.

Jeggings worn under long tops etc. are acceptable, as are leggings. After resisting for years, I gave in, but always wear them under dresses (and they're warm, which is good when trying to wear dresses in winter). This picture convinced me that leggings can be stylish (it just takes effort).

theyoungvisiter · 07/12/2009 11:09

YANBU.

There are people who can look ok in jeggings, but they are the kind of people who would look ok in a binbag.

If you are gorgeous, stick thin and the right other side of 25 then you MAY be able to get away with them. But you could probably also get away with going out naked but for a Borat-style mankini thong - that's still not a good argument for doing it.

Everyone else might as well wear a Borat mankini thong, they would look just as horrific.

theyoungvisiter · 07/12/2009 11:10

leggings otoh are ok. Although still to be approached with caution.

theyoungvisiter · 07/12/2009 11:12

BTW in case anyone is tempted, here is the Borat mankini thong. Is anyone else concerned that this is currently at number 12 on Amazon?!! .

Think what the streets will look like after Xmas.

ministryofsleep · 07/12/2009 11:12

I wear jeggings with long boots and long top/jumper dress so they look like skinny jeans but fit into boots better. I hate seeing jeggings being worn as jeans with a short top and everything on display - it's not a good look IMO

noddyholder · 07/12/2009 12:06

You don't have to be young particularly I am 44 and wear them size 12 and they look fine. The strong denim ones are just like skinny jeans

GoGoHamsterofDeath · 07/12/2009 12:14

where did your purchase your jeggings noddy?

noddyholder · 07/12/2009 12:17

I have a pair from last year french connection didn't know they were jeggings til this year! They still do them. Also have a grey pair h and m and they are not as good but still ok.They are comfy when you don't want to wear jeans.I think the next ones are denim too have seen them but don't have a pair.

GoGoHamsterofDeath · 07/12/2009 12:19

thanks!

LizzyLordsALeaping · 07/12/2009 12:22

Mine are from Next, they have a seam down the side, just like jeans, have the black and dark blue ones, wash well and v comfy.

ImSoNotTelling · 07/12/2009 12:34

Ooooooh right I see.

I saw a tubby teen in the shopping precinct the other day who appeared to have forgotten to put her skirt on. She was wearing what i thought were tights, the weave was stretched right across her backside and you could see her knickers clearly through them.

I was [shock[

But now i understand she was simply being fashionable!

fishie · 07/12/2009 12:38

i've got topshop ones. i think they are only bad if you can tell what they are - ie short top.

i bet loads of you have thought someone looked nice in their jeans when they were really wearing the dreaded jeggings. no nasty bulk with pockets zips etc = svelte shape under long tops.

overmydeadbody · 07/12/2009 12:41

Teenagers get it soo wrong don't they?

Jeggings are fine if they are worn properly.

ImSoNotTelling · 07/12/2009 12:44

Mind you i remember some if the things I wore as a teen:

Yellow leggings which were too big pulled right up accidentally showing off crotch area (my mum had to point out to me they looked obscene)

White miniskirt with peach cropped sweatshirt, white mini-stiletto boots and purple and pink eyeshadow

Puffball skirt with spots on it

The lisy goes on and on

I was gibbering when the 80's fashions came back recently

Miggsie · 07/12/2009 12:48

I can't wear commercially made trousers, so unless I make my own I don't wear many trousers (very very long waist to crotch measurement!)

So when leggings came in first time around I was really thrilled as they were nice and stretchy and I did not always have to wear skirts. I wore them with long tops and jackets...

I have worn all my leggings out so was glad they came back in fashion BUT this time round the leggings seem to be little more than footless 20 dernier tights, even in M&S where I would have expected better quality.

So I ended up going to Sweaty Betty and buying performace running leggings...wow, they are nice and warm and well made. But very pricey.

This time around fashion leggings are awful and yes, they are the gay male fashion designer's joke on fat teenage girls.

Ladyanonymous · 07/12/2009 19:17

Treggings....?

OP posts:
Morloth · 07/12/2009 19:28

I saw a girl today wearing what I can only describe as tights as her trousers. Has this passed me by? She had no trousers/skirt on?! It was very strange.

YouMustBeJegging · 07/12/2009 19:29

They are just awful.

Awful, awful and more awful.

I'm probably too tubby to wear them anyway, but even if I was a size 8 I still wouldn't touch them with a fifteen foot pole.

I just don't get it. Why would so many people go out and pay good money for something so intrinsically abominable? If someone five years ago had said to any of you, 'I saw this really lovely pair of denim-look leggings' you would have been or but now some tit in a magazine has given permission for people to walk around looking like an Eighties nightmare, everyone just goes along with it. In a few months you'll be looking at them and thinking 'What the fuck was I thinking?'

Oh and YANBU, OP.

Ladyanonymous · 07/12/2009 19:33

The tights as trousers thing is like a case of the emperors new clothes...

OP posts:
SarfEasticated · 07/12/2009 19:37

I grew up in the 80's too so am not totally against leggings especially when tucking in boots, the the ones I have seen recently that look like 'wet-look' leather just make me feel ill.

SCargot · 07/12/2009 19:38

I jsut flogged a used pair for £16 44!

SCargot · 07/12/2009 19:38
