my ds1 (5) wet himself at school on friday

this has never happened before not even in nursery!!!

he turned 5 at the end of aug and started year 1 in sept

he asked both the teacher and class room assistant and both said no, he said he held it for as long as he could then wet himself.

i didnt pick him up from school on friday as i was working, so didnt see his teacher.

aibu to expect the school to allow my son to go to the loo when he needs it?

I would be . Poor your ds!

thisisyesterday · 06/12/2009 22:10

that would make me really, really angry.

i think in yr 1 they should be allowed to go whenever they need to go, they can hold on for a little bit if something important is going on, but really... that's awful!

i can understand as they get a bit older that they can hold it longer, and learn to go during lunchbreaks, and that teachers can't have kids swanning off every 5 mins to the toilets.

but at 5??? that's just horrid, your poor boy

LIZS · 06/12/2009 22:12

I think you can ask, but at ours they only used to let 2 out at once. Maybe he wasn't waiting as long as he thinks. Accidents happen .

newmama0 · 06/12/2009 22:15

thanks he was really upset.

i am going to speak to his teacher in the morning because im not happy about it.

i can understand when they get older but 5!!!!

I don't see what age has to do with it - YANBU - if your son needs to go then he needs to go.

ellokitty · 06/12/2009 22:19

Establish the facts before you go in all guns blazing.

This happened to my DD1. She never had an accident at nursery, but she did in reception - too involved to remember to go to the loo, until she was absolutely desperate and then someone was already using it (so she was told to wait). Cue accident. However, it was entirely my DDs fault, not the school's.

I'd always be wary of going up angry / upset before you establish the facts, otherwise you could end up with a lot of egg on your face!

Christine71 · 06/12/2009 22:24

Some children claim to need the toilet all the time just as an excuse for a trip out of the classroom. I would expect though that a teacher should be able to identify those.

My DD1 had the same experience in reception and I asked her if she was upset. She shrugged her shoulders and said" No, it was their fault".

I would tell your son the same thing.

newmama0 · 06/12/2009 22:26

will do ellokitty.

im normally really chilled but its the fact he was so upset and kept saying "i said please mummy, i kept saying please but they said i couldnt go and then i weed and it just wouldnt stop"

Poor little mite...

I'd certainly be asking the school about it. Agree, though, that I'd save the righteous indignation until they confirm he asked repeatedly and they said no.

Of course, if his story is completely accurate, I'd be furious. Totally unacceptable at five!

choosyfloosy · 07/12/2009 16:51

happened to me (also at 11 ), happened to ds the other day. When I was 5 it was because we had to queue to ask the teacher questions and I just ran out of time. I learned to get on with it earlier.

I would be very hesitant tbh to encourage a child to blame the teacher/school for this. Obviously he shouldn't blame himself either, it's just an accident, they happen to everyone.

Mishy1234 · 07/12/2009 17:33

Poor thing. You should definitely have a word with his teacher. It may be that he asked very quietly or that she didn't quite understand, but even so she should be told.

Fimbo · 07/12/2009 17:38

In my ds's class if it is carpet time or to attract the teacher's attention they make a "t" shape with their index fingers and then the teacher/ta nods and off they trot to the loo.

newmama0 · 08/12/2009 00:40

hi all

didnt go in all guns blazing!!!

found out he had asked teacher and she had asked him if he could hold it, as class was busy and he said yes.

he held it for about 10 mins then asked again and she said 2 more mins and he was like please please then wet himself!!

so explained that wasnt happy he had to hold so long but understand that kids cant just go off all the time, and teacher said she will not make him wait as long again!!!!!

but cheers everyone for letting me have a rant xx
