AIBU...to feel sad that my kids might be banned from watching a 2018 World Cup game in their home town?

Should my kids be discriminated against in terms of not being allowed to watch a World Cup 2018 game in their home city, all because of an issue that arose more than twenty years before they were born?

Mike Rowbottom wrote a great article: "Milton Keynes seems an unlikely 2018 World Cup venue until you go there".

And you can read it here:

www.insideworldfootball.biz/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7532:mike-r owbottom-milton-keynes-seems-an-unlikely-2018-world-cup-venue-unitl-you-go-there&catid=74:insidewrit e

Then read what the other posters had to say about it at the foot of his article.

What are your thoughts?

I don't really care tbh and I don't understand what you're on about an issue made 20 years ago either.

Ronaldinhio · 06/12/2009 12:42

none, sounds too dull to read

sorry, I wouldn't watch the worldcup...if it was in my back garden I would draw the curtains

also maybe milton keynes was a mistake when chosing a place to live...isn't it all roundabouts??

Anyway the chances of the 2018 world cup being staged here are incredibly low. I really wouldn't worry about it.

ImSoNotTelling · 06/12/2009 12:48

Sorry I'm not interested in football either.

Could you briefly say what the problem is in a post, rather than people having to read links which (speaking only for myself) aren't very tempting...

GoldenSnitch · 06/12/2009 12:49

Hey, I like living in Milton Keynes!! All those roundabouts and grid roads mean getting lost is next to impossible and there are hardly ever any traffic jams.

No starfish in the garden either

No idea what the football thing is about though - will go and have a look

JjandtheBean · 06/12/2009 12:53

how very very dull, post this on dadsnet and then someone may read through that really long article.

BouncingTurtle · 06/12/2009 12:53

YABU to say your kids are being discriminated or banned from watching a world cup in their city. Are they being banned from watching it on TV in their home town? Are they being banned from going to see the match in a different town? I think not

MK does not have much of a footballing history. There are many more worthier towns and cities where it would be appropriate to host World Cup matches.

And as Riven says, they might not even be that bothered...

I really hate the word "discrimination" being bandied about over so trivial a matter.

GoldenSnitch · 06/12/2009 12:55

Ah, it's another 'was buying in a football team a good idea' argument.

ImSoNotTelling · 06/12/2009 12:56

What is the problem though?

TinselianAstra · 06/12/2009 12:58

YABU. It's in 20 fucking 18.

My hometown will never host a World CUp football match either. It's not discrimination. Get a grip.

Our town is thinking of putting in a bid for 2018. THe Rovers ground can stand seat 5,000 people and we could probably use the Recreation Ground too. They can get changed in the loo at the Primary school.
Do we stand a chance, do you think?

Eh? Your children are not going to be banned from anything, or discriminated against. Your town may not get to be a host - neither will lots of other towns. Big deal. It's not "banning" or "discrimination" if the decision goes against one town, whatever the background for the reasons.

GoldenSnitch · 06/12/2009 13:15

Right, I hate football (bear in mind I grew up in Doncaster and the Rovers were never going to inspire a lifelong love of the game!) so this may be a bit simplified - but as far as I understand it...

MK's local football team weren't very good or very popular. A millionaire named Pete Winkleman decided the city needed a better team. Rather than improving the local team, he bought the failing and about to be bankrupt Wimbledon FC and moved them to MK, renaming them the MK Dons (also known as "the Franchise") Some people think this is against some sort of "rules" and hate the team accordingly. They think that because MK Dons are not a "proper" team, MK should not be able to host the word cup in 2018.

I personally, couldn't care less. The jobs etc it would create would be nice but it would make it even more of a pain to get to IKEA for a few weeks. ;)

It's not discrimination. It's football fans saying that the MK Dons do not count as a real team while a few fans in MK go "yes they are, yes they are!"

It's boring.

ImSoNotTelling · 06/12/2009 13:20

So where does the discrimination against the children come in?

My sporting plan is that there should be a few thousand tickets for the olympics handed out to londoners in a lottery, so that some of the people who have contributed to the cost can go.

That is a totally different subject but I am having toruble drumming up enthusiasm for this milton keynes football stuff.

GoldenSnitch · 06/12/2009 13:26

There is no discrimination against the children.

The children might not be able to watch the World Cup game in their home town because it might be ruled out of the race for hosting anything based on the fact that they bought their team in from another town.

They will be able to watch it on the TV just like any other child who wants to bother in any other town/city in the country that doesn't get to host.

I find it hard to drum up enthusiasm and I live here!!

Alambil · 06/12/2009 13:45

Does that mean my DS is discriminated against because my town hasn't got a hope in hell of holding it either?

Don't be ridiculous - get a ticket and travel if you really want to see it...

epithet · 06/12/2009 13:48

I think this is the definitive thread.

monkeyfeathers · 06/12/2009 13:51

I didn't know that about the mk dons. However it seems utterly appropriate that mk has a bought in, 'inauthentic' football team. It's clearly just like everything else in this francised, over-planned but under thought through place. Oh how I hate Milton Keynes.

SCargot · 06/12/2009 13:52

i dont give a fuck

PfftTheMagicDragon · 06/12/2009 13:53

It's not discrimination because you might not get a world cup hosted in your city, you nincompoop!

Mmmango · 06/12/2009 13:54

YAB a complete loon if you think 'no matches in MK' = 'my children are banned from watching a match in MK'
Big fat
