to think that the NHS is a wonderful institution

As some of you may know (I have banged on about it for long enough) my dad was taken into hospital 3 weeks ago chest pains and breathlessness. Found out he had a leaking valve in his heart. On investigation they told him he needed a valve replacement and a bypass. 2 weeks in a cardiac ward being looked after, then off to BRI for the op and 4 days of round the clock care. The wards were spotlessly clean, staff were all without fail competent and friendly. Food was, surprisingly good. He is now back home with nothing to show for the op but an impressive scar and an annoying sense of entitlement

I know that things aren't perfect all the time and I know that many people have legitimate gripes, it is after all a massive organisation and differs hugely. But I just want to say to anyone who works in BRI and Weston general, thankyou for looking after my dad And anyone else working in the NHS who does their very best in difficult circumstances. You are much appreciated by this family.

I know the NHS isn't perfect, but I still am very grateful for what we have here.

lentils I'm irish living in the uk with two kids . We would be screwed if we lived in Ireland. Dp has allergies, i had pre eclampsia with both kids, dd has asthma. If we had to pay 30 euro for every gp visit we would definitely be scrambling for the cash. Every time my mum does the wish you 'would move home' I remind her of this. Having lived in a payment or rot based system i completely appreciate the NHS

Omrian very glad your dad is doing well

YANBU

My Dad died in October 2008 after 8 weeks in the most wonderful ICU. They worked hard and overcome many issues over those weeks but sadly they couldn't save him I am eternally grateful for the level of professionalism in that department.

I am glad your Dad is on the mend and I am really glad to see someone publicly thanking the NHS for the work that they do.

(I am under no illusions that levels of care differ according to place and time and illness. My Dad was seriously ill for 5 years before he died an had a stay in hospital every year of those. I have seen many standards of care - trust me - but on the whole I think that the NHS staff do an amazing job)

One of the most amazing things was when my BIL had a heart attack earlier in the year, within 55 mins of calling the ambulance he was in hospital having an angiogram! I'd like every American who thinks our NHS is dreadful and we have death committees to think about that. My BIL didn't have to worry about paying the bill afterwards. As they discharged him the didn't have to rummage about for a credit card, he just walked out of hospital two days later a new man!
