There's a rat in my bedroom, what am I going to do?

DH reckons it's a bird that's fallen down the chimney, yep a really large bird with a long tail that GNAWS and scrabbles and scratches so loudly that I think it's eaten through the floorboards and it's coming to get me. Actually had to resort to calling his name very loudly (despite sleeping children) to come and rescue me and stab the rat or something. Needless to say he didn't hear me and I had to do a flying leap out of the bed to the door, while holding the now awake baby.

I'm not sleeping in that room tonight, even with rat poison sprinkled liberally. DH and DD think I'm pathetic, scared of a little, wittle rat.

AIBU?

air rifle

large spade over the head

we called the rat man out to a rat in MILs bedroom

he walked in with a fuck off big stick, pulled the dresser back and whacked it over the head

I couldn't believe it, I though it would be all sophisticated rat catching and stuff lol

baskingseals · 30/11/2009 22:39

He's just what I need.

If she didn't have a fridge in the bedroom, then that's my theory blown out of the water!

shockers · 30/11/2009 22:47

Still reckon it's a bird....

baskingseals · 30/11/2009 22:50

All I want for Christmas is a dead rat.

Cross fingers shockers

It was a bungalow!

Get a cat and nice big killer from the animal shelter. Preferably a female. I find even just the presence of my cat sorts out any rodents. When we first moved into this flat I saw one. Not seen anything since we moved in with killer (she is a fuzz bucket really, but earns her keep).

Wierd this thread appearing today. I have just found out that we have a rat in our loft!!!!! ARGH!!!
Spent all last night listening to it scratting about and eating the selection boxes that we had hidden up there. The pest control man has just left, having filled the place with poison.
I have in laws coming to stay for the weekend - What do I do?????

Morloth · 01/12/2009 11:14

Well try to keep them away from the poison glinda, I find a sharp "No" and a tap across the nose with a newspaper very effective.

glinda · 01/12/2009 11:21

Don't tempt me Morloth!!!
We may have to book them into a local hotel and eat out. Every cloud....

PrematureEjoculation · 01/12/2009 11:31

we get rodents with tedious regularit - mice from the field in summer, rats in winter. there is always poison down under the floorboards, and wire wool shoved in any potential house-entry crevice.

so sometimes we hear scratchings, but never for long.

Are you sure it isn't a squirrel? They are incredibly noisy and like to hang around in lofts.

hormonalmum · 01/12/2009 22:28

babybarrister - please tell me where can I get glue traps. I have mice and need RID

Have you dispatched it yet baskingseals?

I saw a huge one eating the poison yesterday.I ran and fetched the gun and by the time I got back downstairs,it had gone.It did come back though, but just as I'd got it in the crosshairs,DH came in very noisily and it scarpered. My neighbour has offered me her cage trap, but when she went to get it,she found a dead rat already in there,so is keeping the trap for a few days to catch it's comrades.

We are mowed out with them around here, this year is worse than usual, because the local estate are knocking down/renovating a lot of their farms, thus making the rats look for new homes.

oh my word ! yannnnnnnnnnbu. Deepest sympathy. I recommend rentokill. They are expensive but have a 24 hour help line and will send someone out to 'deal' with the situation at any time.

Keep us posted.
