to stay off work because of tiredness?

I haven't done this but have been thinking about it and came to the conclusion that I would be being unreasonable. Mostly because if i'm off, my colleagues cop for a little bit of my workload and one poor colleague would have to work a 12 hour day.

I am feeling very tired lately, quite rundown and I could really do with a duvet day. On my one day off I have to go and visit relatives so don't even get to rest then and the 3 hour daily commute gets me down. Is it ok to have a day off work just because of tiredness?

No imho.

MitchyInge · 27/11/2009 19:59

stress and tiredness do mad things to your health over time don't they - taking a day off is probably a very sensible thing to do!

WaitingForVino · 27/11/2009 20:00

nbu

if you need it, take it.

should also ask yourself though, what can be done to avoid this sort of thing in future. what's causing it?

(in America such things are called taking a 'personal day' or 'mental health day' - twee but so what!)

JaneiteMightBite · 27/11/2009 20:02

Can you cancel the trip to relatives and rest on your day off?

cakeywakey · 27/11/2009 20:03

Sorry to hear you're feeling run down. If you take it some holiday then, no, YANBU. If you pull a sickie, then yes I think you are. You've come to that conclusion anyway by the sound of it. Take care, and hope you're able to get some time off soon

moondog · 27/11/2009 20:03

No, it's not ok.Not at all.
Go to bed earlier.

Northernlurker · 27/11/2009 20:03

No it's not ok. You owe it to your employers to sort your life out so you aren't so tired. Your commute and need to see relatives really aren't their problem but by taking time off (when I assume you would call in sick not use holiday) you are costing them. Now if you are so exhausted it's affecting your health then you should ask your GP to sign you off as you aren't fit to work. Otherwise I'm afraid you have to suck it up, plan to make some changes and book some holiday time as soon as you can get it.

TheFallenMadonna · 27/11/2009 20:05

We've recently been OFSTEDed, and one of my colleagues took a day off afterwards, saying "the lack of sleep had caught up with her". So I had to put one of her classes in with mine and sort out cover work for all the others.

Whether or not it is reasonable depends on the effect it will have on your colleagues I think.

fedupintheoffice · 27/11/2009 20:07

Thanks for your replies. I have already made my mind up that it's the wrong thing to do, but was wondering what others thought.

Moondog, I arrive home, have my tea then go to bed most nights.

Hmm. It is rotten being so tired, but tbh I don't think you should take a day off sick.
You need to organise your non-work life to make sure you get some time to yourself. Or organise some official leave if possible.
If you are concerned for your health then get yourslef checked out and if necessary properly signed off, but don't take a sick day. You never know when you might really need one.

moondog · 27/11/2009 20:09

Do yuo do some exercise?
It actually gives you more energy.

CocoLP · 27/11/2009 20:09

You should look into taking a tonic if you're so run down. Pharmaton is very good. If it continues, even though you are sleeping a lot, maybe you should go for a check up?

Ripeberry · 27/11/2009 20:10

Maybe change your job if you can't cope with it? A 3hr commute each day is just too draining

I'm going to start making notes, I can't remember anything about anybody.

MillyR · 27/11/2009 20:58

Oh, it will be a shame if it is a troll because I am lurking and hoping to pick up tips on how to beat tiredness. I am knackered and counting down the days until the Christmas holidays.

CocoLP · 27/11/2009 20:59

Pharmaton, Milly, Pharmaton.

monkeyfacegrace · 27/11/2009 20:59

Yup shine on, you are right. The OP is a fucking freak who obv has no real friends. Unsure as to whether she just needs someone to talk to, or needs some real help?

BarbieLovesKen · 27/11/2009 21:02
