thumbwitch do you dislike things like furbys and tamagochis as well then?

thumbwitch · 26/11/2009 17:47

click on the blue underlined words bloody thing in the opening post. It will open a new window that shows you the page being linked to.

thumbwitch · 26/11/2009 17:47

nappy addict, I sure do. Especially furbies.

nappyaddict · 26/11/2009 17:54

because they are annoying or because they can't learn responsibility for an electronic virtual pet or both

borderslass · 26/11/2009 17:56

my youngest had the fur real rabbit and to be honest it was a bloody waste of money she was desperate for it and when she got it, it just sat on her bed untouched.

thumbwitch · 26/11/2009 17:58

mostly because they are annoying and I am an old gimmer who objects generally to making artificial versions of things that already exist naturally, when the natural versions are more fun and better for you (I'm including things like virtual football/sports etc. here - go OUTSIDE AND PLAY!)

...but also the proper responsibility thing too.

And furbies are creepy.

It looks like it's either extremely dimwitted or just been recently strangled. YANBU

thumbwitch

What do you think of things that plug into the TV like kareoke machines and dance mats?

Or something like this

momijigari · 26/11/2009 18:26

I get all the arguments about a dog isn't just for Christmas, but dd would be better off with an ordinary, and actually, cuddly toy dog - as opposed to a thing full of metal and batteries.

I agree with everyone really - I think electronic toys like this seem to be quite limited in what a child can do with them, and then they end up getting bored with the toy.

Glad it is from John Lewis (easily returnable), but feel a bit sorry for my mother, who I think just wants to have bought something, dd originally ask for the smaller version of this toy, a thing called Peanut.

What're you picking on me for?

but to answer anyway:
karaoke machines - have their place, in that the chances of most people having access to a live band is quite small
dance mats - wouldn't have one - don't need one. you can dance to anything without one.
Kiddidoodle - wtf is wrong with paper and crayons? And I noted it has been discontinued - says something.

SolidGoldBangers · 26/11/2009 18:41

Thing is, to most DC, actual live animals are more like toys - fun for a bit but then you get bored. ANd toy animals are better than real ones in that you can just put them in the cupboard when you are bored.

We have no pets and this is going to remain a pet free house.

lovechoc · 26/11/2009 18:51

screw that, nearly £100 for a toy dog! it would get played with for 5 mins and DS would move on to something else...

maxybrown · 26/11/2009 20:49

God it is so darn ugly!!! I think it would freak me out a bit And lol whoever said about teddy ruxpin - HE was freaky!!

lovechoc · 26/11/2009 20:56

maxybrown I agree it's v ugly indeed. seen nicer toys that are a fraction of the price.

ScottishBoris · 26/11/2009 21:04

whispers despite having access to our very real four dogs dd1 has been yammering on about wanting one of these for over 12 months. Dp gave in and ordered one on-line for her Xmas present.

I'm not particularly keen, but she will be super chuffed and if she doesn't play with it dd2 will and I'm sure it'll get passed to my niece in due course.

My two also have the mini kitten and puppy, bought last year and still play with them every day - I think the competitive element of the other one wanting to play with it also adds to they staying power of a toy, so I am hopeful...

(starting to regret allowing dp access to laptop )

PrammyMammy · 26/11/2009 21:26

My dn has a furreal cat, wasn't that expensive though. She loves it.
I can't justify the 'kota the triceratops' that my ds wants though.

Juillet · 26/11/2009 21:29

literally

JaneiteMightBite · 26/11/2009 21:32

It's hideous - and stupidly expensive. And will sit in the house glaring at you and taking up space. I think a hundred squid is far too much to spend on a toy - unless it is a bike or a Wii, personally.

ScottishBoris · 26/11/2009 21:42

I am a bad person...

dont hate them but short play life imo

nappyaddict · 26/11/2009 22:16

Sorry thumbwitch wasn't picking on you, it's just you seem to have similar ideas to me about toys! I had a thread a while back about trying to only buy toys with no batteries. It's here if you want to take a look.

thumbwitch · 26/11/2009 22:27

that's ok, nappyaddict - I was just wondering which way it was going to "go" after I'd revealed all, iyswim - i.e. whether you would come out as a sympathiser or jump on me for being an old gimmer!

If you live anywhere near Dorking, there is a toyshop there that specialises in toys with no batteries - it is their selling point. I'll try and remember the name for you but I'm going out now so it will be later on - I'll add it to your thread.

wannaBe · 26/11/2009 22:28

friend bought her dd the pony for Christmas about three years ago. She sold it on ebay the next year for nearly as much as she bought it for!

She's also got the cat.

My issue with these toys is that they're just... weird really. They don't do much, but even the bit that they do ie moving and wagging tails etc is accompanied by the wirring of their motors. freaky.

butterscotch · 26/11/2009 22:34

Fecking ugly thing! I saw them in costco the other week disgusting! My friend wanted to by my dd the cat version which is about £40 she is only 2 i told her not to the cat is even uglier!

I love cats and dogs and after this baby is born I will be getting a real dog, I grew up with pets loved love love them! Hubby never had a pet which I think is sad!

I didn't get a dog till I was 7 and I was responsible for feeding and walking as well as my mum! I loved it! My dog was my best friend!
