not just style, food, alcohol, anything
why the permanent comparisons?
we would be better off comparing outselves to asimilar type of country say,... denmark or Norway

bibbitybobbityhat - WHAT? didn't you just think 'he is gay' because according to urban myths that is what a lot of gay men do....

Rhubarb · 25/11/2009 20:26

Well in France they wouldn't have this internet forum malarkey, they would all be chatting to one another over red wine and coffee in a Parisian bar...

Actually I mentioned France on two threads today about alcohol, but in my defence I hardly ever mention France and only did so because I have experience of the drinking culture in France.

Rhubarb · 25/11/2009 20:28

BTW 'DanDruff', look what I'm getting for Chrimbo!

jamaisjedors · 25/11/2009 20:31

(Good news about Christmas Rhubarb - I followed your thread for a bit).

I bet you WILL get some wear out of it, because unlike in France, British people actually get dressed-up (in a good way, not in a pirate hat/fairy wings way!) to go out.

They also actually go out to bars/pubs which is more than anyone I know.

notanumber · 25/11/2009 20:31

Dunno about "better".

To be honest, France is just like England, only wrong.

Lizzylou · 25/11/2009 20:31

Yeah, yeah Quint, nice fish, nice lamb.

HOw many, how big?

JesusChristOtterStar · 25/11/2009 20:38

Vincent Cassel and i would even if our headbands clashed

Lizzylou · 25/11/2009 20:42

EEEw, he looks like Swampy!

Rhubarb · 25/11/2009 20:43

Ooh jamais, I always used to feel like such a scruff whenever I went into the city. French people actually get dressed up to go shopping and they have such style. No matter how hard I tried, I could never pull off that "oh this old thing" look.

Not a tracksuit in sight either.

I am a Francophile, I make no apologies for it. The only thing that sucked is their inability to serve a decent cup of tea.

JesusChristOtterStar · 25/11/2009 20:49

rhubs oh i long for a pirate copy of that show

wahwah · 25/11/2009 20:56

But surely the French admire us as much as we do them? Worst thing British women ever did was try to compete with furren girls on looking groomed. We just don't do it as well, might as well make a virtue of our individuality in fashion and music and be proud of our unique sense of style.

Rhubarb · 25/11/2009 21:02

Ha! You may wish JesusChrist but we burned every copy bar one, which is under lock and key.

Shame you didn't see it though, I got my kit off outside BBC studios.

Fennel · 25/11/2009 21:05

My dd2 had her 8th birthday in France and I had promised her a wonderful French birthday cake. We trawled round loads of shops and cafes and ended up with a few very disappointing cream cakey things. She was quite upset. She couldn't be persuaded that apple tart is a suitable alternative to Real Birthday Cake.

JesusChristOtterStar · 25/11/2009 21:10

french films for children are in a different league

Kirikou being one of them and the princes quest

more recently i found the most amazing and beautiful film for my younger kids - can't recall name now but again french and too young for subtitles

MmeLindt · 25/11/2009 21:11

I say 'in France/Switzerland/Germany...' a fair bit because after living in the country you do find things to compare.

We noticed that the comparing is done almost without thought and is often not even done to say one country is better. It is a statrment of what you have noticed that is done differently.

I live 2km from the French border and while the ladies in Geneva are tres chic, if you go over to one of the provincial supermarkets there are just as many jogging bottom clad shoppers as you would find in Asda in Dundee.

Well, maybe not quite that many.

JesusChristOtterStar · 25/11/2009 21:12

rhubs but i did see it!! it was before i mn though

engrained in my memory - you first day in school ...i could go on ....and on..........and on ....

Rhubarb · 25/11/2009 21:13

So how did you know I mumsnet? Are you stalking me?

tethersend · 25/11/2009 21:14

What's the difference between toast and the French?

JesusChristOtterStar · 25/11/2009 21:15

no i think it was about 2005 i 'recognised' you....

i did tell you at the time!

Rhubarb · 25/11/2009 21:16

Alcohol has killed my brain cells. If I met you on a night out, chances are I wouldn't even remember the night out!

Toast can be buttered up?

Romanarama · 25/11/2009 21:19

was Azur et Asmar the beautiful film?

(Seems to be in Spanish on this site for some reason, but our DVD's French and it's such a lovely film.)

Ivykaty44 · 25/11/2009 21:19

what do you call a french man wearing flip flops?

noddyholder · 25/11/2009 21:24

The pedants will have you for that thread title

Rhubarb · 25/11/2009 21:26

There appears to be other French threads up now for the sole purpose of French bashing. Is there a feud with a French mumsnetter going on that I'm not aware of or something? Or is there nothing on the telly to interest the bored teenagers?

JesusChristOtterStar · 25/11/2009 21:28

yes romanarama - the most beautiful film... my boys love it so so much - they are three and six and are enthralled by it

i see it as art - a work of art!! gush gush i know but wow!
