My sister and BIL are about to start IVF. sis has been onto sites like this one for people with fertility problems. But BIL has locked the sites because their consultant told them not to look. I personally think the sites would be a good support for her. Surely talking to other woman in her position would help?

BIL and the Consultant have "forbidden" her, is that right? Is the Doctor a man by any chance?

I'd have DH's bollocks for breakfast if he tried to stop me accessing anything.

Mumsnet is fantastic.

BIL has locked the sites?!!!

WTF?!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 21/11/2009 21:57

Did the consultant explain his position?

spicemonster · 21/11/2009 21:57

Her DH is in charge of the computer?? Is your sister a child?

I had fertility treatment and I found sites a) very helpful in terms of understanding the process, the drugs etc and b) extremely supportive.

Grrr

MmeLindt · 21/11/2009 21:59

BIL has blocked the sites?

She is an adult woman, soon to be responsible for a child.

She can be trusted to make a decision about which websites to visit.

Tell your BIL to come on to MN and hear what we are going to say about him, I suspect it won't be complimentary.

fernie3 · 21/11/2009 22:05

If my husband blocked sites from me I would make his life a total misery. She doesnt need him to decide what she can go on! I have never heard a doctor discussing which internet sites are acceptable either...did you sister hear this or was is something her husband "claimed" to have been told. Sounds odd to me.

mrmump · 21/11/2009 22:05

The doctor has said that every case is different. i suppose he doesn't want her to get her hopes up/down.

Each to their own. I have a friend who went through IVF and I told her about MN. She was not really interested so left it.

If your sister feels that having some online support from others who have been through the same thing would help her then she should tell her DH to bugger off.

MmeLindt · 21/11/2009 22:11

The doc does not want her coming to him saying, 'I read on the internet...'

Some docs still think that they are the 'Gods in white'

scottishmummy · 21/11/2009 22:13

the internet is awash with quacky misplaced health advice and so called research BUT she is an adult and able to exercise her autonomy.her dh shouldnt block sites

talk to others by all means but be aware it is subjective on-line chat.you need to make your decisions on quality advice and clinical efficacy and face to face consultation

mrmump · 21/11/2009 22:14

BIL is one of those blokes who I've never been completely sure about. i think blocking sites is totally out of order.

have they become amish?

if not, tell her to play strictly loudly on repeat until her switches mn back on

changefortoday · 21/11/2009 22:19

test

MmeLindt · 21/11/2009 22:30

ScottishMummy has a good point, you do have to take everything that you read on the net with a pinch of salt, and never ever read just one opinion or one website.

I had to tell my SIL to stop googling and let me do it for her as she was getting upset. she was looking for info about a tumour that her DS had and kept finding doom and gloom stories, when actually the treatment is generally pretty sucessful
