And toys.
It's a bookshop. Clue in title.

what is it that all shops must sell same old shit as every other shop everything.

Molly, dear, keep up. Things are a-changing. What next? No Times on sale in Starbucks? No food at the petrol shop?

Apparently, twilight is v v good.

southeastastra · 20/11/2009 20:07

we had a borders that sold everything, it's gone now and i really miss it, so don't moan too much

winestein · 20/11/2009 20:10

It's probably borne of desperation to stay afloat in hard times. If I were in retail right now, I'd sell anything that I could likely sell, regardless of what I "officially" sold.

daftpunk · 20/11/2009 20:10

yanbu....i want to buy books from a book shop...if i want music i'll go to hmv...

maybe it changed when books went onto cd..?

midnightexpress · 20/11/2009 20:11

What SEA said. They do it because they need to earn a buck to be able to sell books that nobody buys. A small independent bookshop near us closed down recently.

Just you wait, those Reader thingys will take over the world next and then you'll have something to complain about when you can't actually buy yer actual books any more.

mollyroger · 20/11/2009 20:12

no, no I like twilight. don't get hung up on detail.

I mean, bookshops should sell books.

I am all for old style high streets with butcher's, baker's, candlestick makers...

OP posts:
winestein · 20/11/2009 20:12

Would you really daftpunk? Or would you go to buy the book you wanted and see the DVD you know someone wants for Christmas and think to yourself "I'll save myself going to HMV and buy it here and now because I'm shattered and I want to go home". I know what I'd do (unless it was stupid-price of course!!)

midnightexpress · 20/11/2009 20:12

daftpunk, keep up. DVDs, not CDs.

And most people these days get their music off a computer. And their books, come to that.

mollyroger · 20/11/2009 20:13

I will be a diehard book reader. I mean, you can't read an i-book in the bath....

(can you tell I mourn the passing of Lps too? )

OP posts:
winestein · 20/11/2009 20:14

I know what you mean, Molly. It just doesn't make good business sense for a lot of retailers at the moment. For example, what did happen to candlestick maker's shops? If only they had diversified...

Mybox · 20/11/2009 20:14

Don't see a problem with this - if you don't want to buy a dvd you don't have to.

mollyroger · 20/11/2009 20:16

no but, yeah but, I just feel it is undermining books.
My dc are the worst offenders.
''i don't need to read harry Potter, mum. I saw the dvd.''

daftpunk · 20/11/2009 20:17

sorry...not reading it properly..

i get most of my music from itunes...but i still buy about 3 cds a month....

i buy all our books from amazon...but i can spend hours in bookshops..

winestein · 20/11/2009 20:17

Ahhhhh! You have a (previously) hidden agenda!

mollyroger · 20/11/2009 20:18

what?

OP posts:
mollyroger · 20/11/2009 20:19

I didn't say I was anti-films-of-books, just that I feel it is WRONG to be able to buy dvds from a bookshop.

ahundredtimes · 20/11/2009 20:24

Recently a couple v. esteemed authors met with staff at Waterstone's Piccadilly. They said, 'why has the biography section been moved upstairs, all far away, and been replaced with shelves of stationery?'

'because we sell more stationery'

Think bookshops have to compete with supermarkets and other book outlets now, so they feel they have to diversify. Is a worry though. We still have two independents going strong here - and so much nicer to go to.

JANEITEisntErudite · 20/11/2009 20:26

I don't have a problem with it - but I'd far rather have a book than a DVD.

mollyroger · 20/11/2009 20:29

But can't anyone foresee a time when the bookshop says: ''Oh we don't stock the actual book anymore - there was no demand, see, but look, we have the dvd, starring Leonardo di Caprio and Jennifer Aniston...''

OP posts:
ahundredtimes · 20/11/2009 20:32

Yes, I can forsee that. It's like going into HMV now and them saying, 'what's a CD? We don't sell those but we do sell Shoot Women in Boots for DS, X box and PS2 - you want?'

midnightexpress · 20/11/2009 20:36

I can foresee it too, but Waterstones not stocking DVDs won't stop it happening, I'm afraid.

ahundredtimes · 20/11/2009 20:37

(Molly - I can't keep leaving you messages on the mug thread, too mad. No I haven't been here until a couple of days ago, or name changed honest, I meant I've been here and there. I don't know what I meant actually. I haven't been here or there. I've mostly been sitting in my house staring out the window )

mollyroger · 20/11/2009 20:38

so why do we need to have 50 shops all selling the same dvds, books, toys, games, stationary etc at the same price?

OP posts:
mollyroger · 20/11/2009 21:04

so, Monsoon, why do they not sell dvds then? AIBU to demand that H&M sell pc games?
I mean, Asda sell clothes and pc games so....

OP posts:
winestein · 20/11/2009 21:05

Molly - I'm ribbing you. My hidden agenda comment was related to your comment about your children not wanting to read the books because they had seen the film.
