to think a bookshop should not sell dvds.

? Waterstones. Full of fecking dvds of Twilight.
And toys.
It's a bookshop. Clue in title.

what is it that all shops must sell same old shit as every other shop everything.

we had a borders that sold everything, it's gone now and i really miss it, so don't moan too much

It's probably borne of desperation to stay afloat in hard times. If I were in retail right now, I'd sell anything that I could likely sell, regardless of what I "officially" sold.

yanbu....i want to buy books from a book shop...if i want music i'll go to hmv...

maybe it changed when books went onto cd..?

What SEA said. They do it because they need to earn a buck to be able to sell books that nobody buys. A small independent bookshop near us closed down recently.

Just you wait, those Reader thingys will take over the world next and then you'll have something to complain about when you can't actually buy yer actual books any more.

I mean, bookshops should sell books.

I am all for old style high streets with butcher's, baker's, candlestick makers...

Would you really daftpunk? Or would you go to buy the book you wanted and see the DVD you know someone wants for Christmas and think to yourself "I'll save myself going to HMV and buy it here and now because I'm shattered and I want to go home". I know what I'd do (unless it was stupid-price of course!!)

And most people these days get their music off a computer. And their books, come to that.

I will be a diehard book reader. I mean, you can't read an i-book in the bath....

I know what you mean, Molly. It just doesn't make good business sense for a lot of retailers at the moment. For example, what did happen to candlestick maker's shops? If only they had diversified...

Don't see a problem with this - if you don't want to buy a dvd you don't have to.

sorry...not reading it properly..

i get most of my music from itunes...but i still buy about 3 cds a month....

i buy all our books from amazon...but i can spend hours in bookshops..

I didn't say I was anti-films-of-books, just that I feel it is WRONG to be able to buy dvds from a bookshop.

Recently a couple v. esteemed authors met with staff at Waterstone's Piccadilly. They said, 'why has the biography section been moved upstairs, all far away, and been replaced with shelves of stationery?'

'because we sell more stationery'

Think bookshops have to compete with supermarkets and other book outlets now, so they feel they have to diversify. Is a worry though. We still have two independents going strong here - and so much nicer to go to.

I don't have a problem with it - but I'd far rather have a book than a DVD.

But can't anyone foresee a time when the bookshop says: ''Oh we don't stock the actual book anymore - there was no demand, see, but look, we have the dvd, starring Leonardo di Caprio and Jennifer Aniston...''

Yes, I can forsee that. It's like going into HMV now and them saying, 'what's a CD? We don't sell those but we do sell Shoot Women in Boots for DS, X box and PS2 - you want?'

I can foresee it too, but Waterstones not stocking DVDs won't stop it happening, I'm afraid.

(Molly - I can't keep leaving you messages on the mug thread, too mad. No I haven't been here until a couple of days ago, or name changed honest, I meant I've been here and there. I don't know what I meant actually. I haven't been here or there. I've mostly been sitting in my house staring out the window )

so why do we need to have 50 shops all selling the same dvds, books, toys, games, stationary etc at the same price?

I mean, Asda sell clothes and pc games so....
