I have just taken the dog for a walk - it was lovely and sunny when we set off, so we went to a local loch, where she could chase tennis balls and swim and generally mess around in the mud.

We got as far from the car as we were going to get, and played for a while, and then the heavens opened! So we decided to walk back to the car, which meant walking into the wind and the rain, and I swear that the rain was liquid ice and the far wetter than it should have been.

I'm off for a nice warm shower while the dog has a sleep, and the Great Brains of mumsnet decide whether rain can be colder, and particularly wetter sometimes!

Of course it can be colder sometimes, stayingsunnygirl.

Sometimes rain gets really, really cold. Then it turns a funny white colour and goes all fluffy. I wonder if you have ever seen this phenomenon?

Yes, there is some rain that goes right through you. This is known as 'fine rain', or Peter Kay's rain; it's not normally cold, but has a peculiarly drenching quality. It's a speciality of the North West of England, where there are over 100 different words for liquid precipitation in Lake District dialect alone.

Oh yes indeed! Rain is always colder and wetter when you decide to take a chance and go without an umbrella. or a coat.

White, fluffy rain? Hmmmmmm - I think I remember something of the sort, BalloonSlayer!
