Not to allow my DD (10) Chewing Gum?

Don't have many principles but really detest people chewing gum, particularly when they treat everyone else to the contents of their mouth. Alex Ferguson should be strung up imo (not that I'm a fanatic or anything you understand)Even worse, what happens to the gum afterwards. DH chews gum (one of his less eandearing habits) and DD wants to at least try it (she says she won't have it again which I know is complete bolloeaux). Am I right to put my trotter down?

My DD is 10 and has chewing gum occasionally. She is allowed to buy it with her pocket money. It's never been stuck to my sofa or carpet or anywhere else it shouldn't be. Why not let her have it and tell her the rules about disposing of it and tell her there will be no second chances if it is found anywhere it shouldn't be?!

But she is your DD, so you decide what your rules are.

Morloth · 19/11/2009 19:28

That is people being nasty ferals though. Your DD is presumably not a nasty feral!

bellavita · 19/11/2009 19:28

I would not buy it for my boys but they do buy it themselves... and Grandma is the worst bloody culprit for giving it to them.

DS1 has got gum stuck to the inside of one of his "nice" pair of trainers, god knows how it got there, but it has ruined the insole and a sock!

They tend to pull it out of their mouth and twist it round their fingers, then touch my furniture....

JANEITEisntErudite · 19/11/2009 19:31

My two are 14 and 12 and have never been allowed it, though I know they've tasted it when away from home. It's not that I think they'd make a mess with it, as I know they wouldn't, I just hate seeing people chewing at it all the time and I agree that it's a waste of resources.

deaddei · 19/11/2009 19:32

madoldbat- YANBU. Totally agree with you. I want to punch Alex Ferguson when he chews gum- makes him look slack.

halfcut · 19/11/2009 19:38

that people don't allow their teensgers to chew gum ..especially the 18 year old ..

chegirl · 19/11/2009 19:39

My kids know how to dispose of it properly too. Like they know how to put their clothes in the laundry and keep their rooms tidy..

They dont do these things though. I can cope with telling them to pick up their stuff. I cant cope with the mess they make with gum. Its not a food group. They dont need it. I really dont think its going to make them social outcasts if they dont have it.

I wouldnt punish them for eating it when they were out. I am not morally opposed to it. I just dont want it stuck in the dogs ear.

I love the fact that I dabbled with chewing gum aged 9 and messed up really badly so it was banned in the house (I couldn't find the plug for the bath so i used chewing gum and it blocked the bath and mum and dad had to call the plumber to get it out)

I loathe being able to see the inside of peoples mouths and seeing it all on the pavement. most people wouldn't throw the wrapper on the floor yet they feel that they can spit out the chewing gum

jasper · 19/11/2009 19:45

Miggsie, SO AGREE WITH YOU.

I think it is revolting and I get sent lots of free samples from Wrigglies to give to my dental patients. I just can't bear to recommend such a repulsive habit even if it does have dental benefits

Lonicera · 19/11/2009 19:47

I hate it and don't let my kids have it.

Hate it! Probably the only "food" that is banned in this house.

JANEITEisntErudite · 19/11/2009 20:23
