Mumsnet is becoming a politics whore?

Surely we should be observing and commenting on the forthcoming election as and when we want to? And criticising and/or applauding government policy as and when we see fit? And definitely not performing like seals for Newsnight or for anyone else.

I can't even be bothered to look up the spelling of vaccuum -- it would be quite reassuring for someone to refer me to pedants' corner.

Do you mean trust and discretion in terms of who they associate with as an enterprise, such as who they allow to advertise, who they have formal associations with (such as the DM ) and are including PR in that, such as the Newsnight piece?

ABetaDad · 19/11/2009 17:33

I mean trust and discretion in how the data held by MN is used and who is allowed to access it.

Anyone in the world is welcome to read what I write on MN if they want to join the Forum or even Google but I do not want to become a mechanism for pollsters and journalists to fed pre digested data and information to do polling research and get media copy.

I am happy for MN to offer advertising space to anyone but not become aligned or appear to be aligned to any political party in the way it presents itself in the media.

MadameDefarge · 19/11/2009 17:41

Hm. I see your point. MN is being profiled from the census information published by MN. But its not massively indepth, it just shows basic information, which I personally find interesting and not particularly problematic, but maybe I am missing a trick here.

Do you think they should not have done the census, or having done it, not published it?

I heartily agree with you re the formal or even assumed support for any political party or media.

ABetaDad · 19/11/2009 17:54

I am worried about why the census was done and how it will be used. I filled in the census in good faith but cannot understand why the results were in [http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/rachel_sylvester/article6919267.ece The Times. I would like MNHQ to reassure us.

MNHQ do a fantasic job and feel a little bit proud and privelleged to be a part of an internet phenomenon. However, care needs to be taken especially in te run up to the eelection that we as users and lets face it the contributors do not become used by people and organisations who will only associate with MN out of pure short term self interest.

Me and my familiy were exposed to intense and relentless media interest some years ago and I know from that experience that any interaction with the media needs very careful management.

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/11/2009 17:54

Its not the first Mumsnet census iirc. Am sure I had a look at one before, a few years ago.

ABetaDad · 19/11/2009 17:55

That link again to the article in the The Times.

I would love to clear up this 850,000 members thing once and for all. Perhaps I should start a thread about it.

MadameDefarge · 19/11/2009 18:20

Justine quoted it again on PM, saying over a million women use MN each month. Does that mean a million individuals are active MN users? or a million posts? Agree its not clear.

ABD. I think, and you probably do to, think its legitimate for any business to attempt to profile their customer base. It forms an essential base upon which to pitch for advertising, vital for the commercial viability of any business.

So do they share the info with us? In which case it becomes public domain, and a source of info for others who wish to target that demographic (whether or politicians or others). How can they target us? Well, by advertising, or by asking MN for the chance to engage with us in webchats, or campaigns or whatever.

Does this open the forum up to abuse by those wishing to target us? MNHQ are the keepers of the gate on that one. Which brings us back to the issue of discretion on their part, which I think on the whole they are good at. They do not accept advertising willy nilly and the web chats are generally with people who are of interest to many MNetters.

I think we need to be a bit robust about it. I don't think any of us are about to be doorstepped by the redtops about our opinions, We can just avoid threads that vex us.

Yes, its a bit Mumsnet frenzy atm, but I am sure that will calm down.

But I do have a tiny niggle of discomfort in MN being charaterised by stats. Like the biggest "single" area represented is London. But the rest add up to a much larger majority, which I think reflects populations and demographics across the country. ie, if 27% are londoners, then that means 73% aren't. Yet it might be easy to spin that as MN being overly represented by Londoners, amongst other erroneous conclusions that could be drawn from the data.

Still thinking about that one.

MadameDefarge - yes basically agree with what you are saying. Especially "MNHQ are the keepers of the gate on that one".

I just want them to be careful that is all and not suggesting MNHQ are doing anything wrong.

I have only seen it referred to as 850,000 (or 800,000) "members" or "users" on C4 news last night, Woman's Hour today and in the Rachel Sylvester column in The Times.

scottishmummy · 19/11/2009 20:06

i think mn incresed profile is a good thing, and if it increases membership brings new posters with opinions and experiences to offer that is brilliant

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/11/2009 20:24

And again by Tim Dowling in The Guardian (thanks to Morning Paper for linking).
