SIL seems very insistant of reading books to her DD that most people would consider advanced for a 3yo. Her DD seems to enjoy these stories, but I'm convinced it's because she likes sitting on her mums lap, having a hug, not that she is actually engrosed in what is being read to her. Sil has also commented that some children are unable to read when they start reception (er, yes, like my 3 DC's)
Anyway, I saw a gorgous picture book while I was browsing in a shop today, and immediately thought of buying it for DN for Christmas. On the one hand I think it would Be nice for DN to look at a picture book and make up the words, of have a adult make them up when reading it to her...on the other hand I think my SIL will be that I've given her such a basic book. I alsofeel like giving DN this book I would be making a huge statement as to what I think 3yo's should be reading.

Here is the book

It is a great book.
You can get around it by saying the following "Molly, I know this is not the kind of book you would normally chose for Sally, but I think it is lovely. You and Sally can make up your own stories, so it can be a new story every time you read it" This way you are acknowledging what they normally read in a non-judgemental way, and show that you have thought about the gift and its suitability for the recipient. If I were "Molly" I would be thrilled.

deepdarkwood - I was going to buy DN the Naughty Little Sister series untill I saw this book, just because my DC's loved the stories so much, as did I when I was little. Should I stick to that?

QES - that is just what I would say.

I'd buy both - but maybe just one of the naughty little sisters rather than the whole series.

LynetteScavo · 16/11/2009 22:28

But the whole series are only about £9.99 with the Book People.

Oh well, fair enough then .
Is both financially feasible/appropriate? I just think I'd avoid only giving a present that could cause offense...

Explain to SIL if she makes a comment that you heard it was a fabulous book for developing language skills, story comprehension and inference skills -

Looks lovely to me. My DTs are 3, and they like stories being read to them, but their current favourite is this It's a picture book with loads of pictures on each page, and a question to prompt discussion (sounds wanky - it's not. Things like a lovely scene with countryside, mountains, a city, a castle, seaside, a few planets in the sky etc etc and the question "Where would you want to live?" It's fab.

YANBU about the book, it looks lovely.

YABU to make a judgement about how much your niece is really enjoying the books. My DS is not yet 2 and loves long books (for his age) e.g. cat in the hat, room on the broom. He asks for them by name. It's not just the cuddle he enjoys.

colditz · 16/11/2009 23:09

It's lovely.Children should experience a range of books though, not just appropriately aged ones. I read "the House At Pooh Corner" to Ds2 (also 3) and he does understand it, does become engrossed in it and he really enjoys it. I am NOT a pushy parent.

EvilTwins I know that book-trust me you will grow to HATE the darn thing I think my DS demanded it every single day for at least a year-we had to hide it while muttering curses against the bookstart people from whence it came. To make things worse he would always want to go through EVERY option on the page and then choose the same flippin' things every time..... I shudder to think of it.

LynetteScavo · 17/11/2009 13:07

Stuff it, I'm going to stick to the My Naughty Little Sister set, as I think it'll be a winner all round. How could any body not adore My Naughty Little Sister?
