to want dh to go to the doctors with a pain in his chest?

What is the story with men who won't go to the doctor when there is obviously something wrong.
Dh had a pain in his chest on Thursday and it had eased by the evening (just as I got home from work). He said it was a twinge on Friday and he thought it must be a muscle. Anyway he was up at 6 this morning and it was quite bad (qoute 'I thought I was having a heart attack') but it has eased again and he won't go to the doctor today. He says he'll go tomorrow but I know he's putting it off. He is under a lot of stress at the moment and his dad had a massive heart attack at 42.
Am I panicking? I feel really worried.

bump

It could be a pneumothorax if pain is coming and going.
Is he tall and lean?

I'm really glad you're contacting the out of hours doctor.

A lovely friend of mine died, aged 36, of a heart attack recently. She had been to the GP complaining of a pain in her chest. He thought it was muscle pain and gave her some ibuprofen gel to rub in. She died a week later leaving 2 children.

Chest pain should never be ignored.

glad you're making contact - needs looking into. my Dad had chest pain last year and has a horrendous family history and wouldn't do anything about it but after a LOT of persuasion he went and ended up needing bypass surgery. We've been lucky that he's now ok but scary time.

good luck

So glad you're making him see the doctor. I suffered a heart attack 2 years ago whilst visiting my daughter. I didn't want to make a fuss and it was only when I realised I was really in pain did I ask her to call NHS direct.

They sent an ambulance immediately. As a result of me waiting so long (2 hours) I suffered damage to my heart and am now on medication and warfarin for life.

If I'd only phoned earlier I might have recovered fully.

The message here is DON'T DELAY. Minutes mean muscle.

Good luck and keep us posted

Hi Ladies
I'm sorry I haven't been able to update, I haven't been able to log on at home as dh has taken over the couch and laptop!
Well I contacted the our of hours doctor who happened to be our own local doctor, he had a chat with dh and we ended up going into a&e.

They did an ecg (?) first off and it was normal. They were happy with it because dh had chest pain while he was being monitored but the ecg still showed no abnormalities.

Dh did have a slight fever and was feeling anxious about being there hooked up to a monitor (he was completely stressed that they were going to keep him in and he just wanted to get home)

When they listened to his chest he sounded very wheezy so they also did an x-ray which showed that he has a chest infection they hope, they also mentioned pnemonia. They gave him a prescription. So they are putting the pain down to that, however the doctor we were with was very nice and spoke to dh about stress and anxiety. He is so stressed with his business at the moment as in he doesn't know how much longer he'll be there. F**king recession.
Anyway the doctor explained that anxiety can cause chest pain as well (he said because dh started to get stressed as soon as he was hooked up to the monitor he got pains again).

Dh did suffer from stress and panic attacks last year and was on medication to help him.

He has been fine since Sunday night, he's decided to take a few days off and just laze around the house. He has to go back to our doctor next Monday to see if his lungs are clear. So he's happy to wait until then so he can have a good talk with him about it.

Thank you so much for all your advice and concern. I really appreciate it.

SO glad he got seen and it wasn't a heart attack!

ronshar · 17/11/2009 10:35

Great news. Chest infections are easliy treatable as is pneumonia.

Well done for getting your DH to the hospital.
